        Enhancement of potency and stability of human extracellular superoxide dismutase

        Cells express several antioxidant enzymes to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) responsible for oxidative damages and various human diseases. Therefore, antioxidant enzymes are considered biomedicine candidates. Among them, extracellular superoxide dismutase (SOD3) had showed prominent efficacy against asthma and inflammation. Despite its advantages as a biomedicine, the difficulty in obtaining large quantity of active recombinant human SOD3 (rhSOD3) has limited its clinical applications. We found that a significant fraction of overexpressed rhSOD3 was composed of the inactive apo-enzyme and its potency against inflammation depended on the rate of metal incorporation. Also, purified rhSOD3 was unstable and lost its activity very quickly. Here, we suggest an ideal preparative method to express, purify, and store highly active rhSOD3. The enzymatic activity of rhSOD3 was maximized by incorporating metal ions into rhSOD3 after purification. Also, albumin or polyethylene glycol prevented rapid inactivation or degradation of rhSOD3 during preparative procedures and long-term storage. [BMB Reports 2015; 48(2): 91-96]

        An angular method of identifying diffractive excitation(DE) events for interactions of a hadron beam in nuclear emulsion is applied to identifying DE events in interactions of heavy ions beams. The "apparent" mean free paths (MEP) of DE processes for ^16O(^28Si) beams are 1.00±0.12, 2.4^_1.6_-0.7, and 2.2±0.4(1.5±0.2)m, respectively, at 200, 60 and 14.6 GeV/nucleon, which corresponds to 20-10% fo the MFP for total inelastic interactions. Distinctive features of diffractively excited nuclei are discussed.

        <P>We synthesized an azobenzene derivative to demonstrate a one-dimensional molecular zipper.         Ultralight shape memory actuator from wire-woven Kagome truss

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this paper, a novel actuator in the form of a Kagome truss composed of shape memory alloy (SMA) wires and common metallic wires is described. In the actuator, the SMA wires play dual roles as load supporters and actuating elements. The intersections between the SMA wires and between the SMA wires and the common metallic wires were joined by using shrinkable tubes, which induced the kinematically compatible buckling of the columns of SMA wires under compression, consequently enabling the large actuation displacement of up to 30% of the height with some sacrifice of the load capacity. An analytic solution was derived using the elementary mechanics of buckling and geometric relation of curved column, which gave fairly good estimation of the behavior of the Kagome actuator for the deformation and actuation stages, based on the behavior of a single SMA wire.         Comparative Analysis on Positive Bias Stress-Induced Instability under High V<SUB>GS</SUB>/Low V<SUB>DS</SUB> and Low V<SUB>GS</SUB>/High V<SUB>DS</SUB> in Amorphous InGaZnO Thin-Film Transistors

        Positive bias stress-induced instability in amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) bottom-gate thin-film transistors (TFTs) was investigated under high VGS/low VDS and low VGS/high VDS stress conditions through incorporating a forward/reverse VGS sweep and a low/high VDS readout conditions. Our results showed that the electron trapping into the gate insulator dominantly occurs when high VGS/low VDS stress is applied. On the other hand, when low VGS/high VDS stress is applied, it was found that holes are uniformly trapped into the etch stopper and electrons are locally trapped into the gate insulator simultaneously. During a recovery after the high VGS/low VDS stress, the trapped electrons were detrapped from the gate insulator. In the case of recovery after the low VGS/high VDS stress, it was observed that the electrons in the gate insulator diffuse to a direction toward the source electrode and the holes were detrapped to out of the etch stopper. Also, we found that the potential profile in the a-IGZO bottom-gate TFT becomes complicatedly modulated during the positive VGS/VDS stress and the recovery causing various threshold voltages and subthreshold swings under various read-out conditions, and this modulation needs to be fully considered in the design of oxide TFT-based active matrix organic light emitting diode display backplane.

        <P>Proposed decomposition is validated by reproducing the PBTS time-evolution of I-V characteristics through the technology computer-aided design simulation into which the extracted DOS and charge trapping are incorporated. It is also found that the quantitative decomposition of PBTS-induce Delta V-T accompanied with the multiple stretched-exponential models enables an effective assessment of the complex degradation nature of multiple PBTS physical processes occurring simultaneously. Our results can be easily applied universally to any device with any stress conditions, along with guidelines for process optimization efforts toward ultimate PBTS stability.</P>

        숭어의 생식주기를 밝히기 위해 2002년 2월부터 2003년 3월까지 제주도 동남부 연안에서 채집하였고, 난모세포의 발달과정을 조직학적 방법으로 관찰하였다. 난모세포의 발달과정은 GSI 변화와 밀접하였다. GSI는 9월에 급격히 증가하여 12월에 최고 값을 나타내었다. 난소의 조직학적 관찰결과, 염색인기와 주변인기의 난모세포는 연중 관찰되었으며, 8월에는 일부에서 난황을 포함하는 난모세포가 관찰되었다. 대부분의 난모세포가 10월과 12월에는 난황구가 단계의 난모세포로 발달했다. 10월과 12월에 난황구기 난모세포들을 가진 개체의 출현이 가장 높았으며, 잔존여포와 퇴화 난모세포는 2월부터 관찰되었다. 숭어의 주산란기는 11월에서 1월이고, 난군동기발달형의 난소를 가지며 외양으로 이동하여 산란하는 어류에 속한다.

        Shape Memory Alloy(SMA) has two special characteristics which recovers its original shape upon heating and gives large deformation. Especially, its shape memory effect is important on making actuators, because it is possible to attain high performance compared to density where space and load are limited. The new actuator with light weight, high stiffness and strength can be made by integrating wire-woven metal with SMA substituted to parts of struts. This study describes the process of assembling the wires into 3D-Kagome structure and making an actuator. The mechanical and thermo-mechanical characteristics of the actuator are investigated by analytic solution and experiments

        물질로서의 책과 유만주(兪晩柱)의 도서 구매 책주릅 조씨(曺氏)와의 거래를 중심으로

        본고에서는 서울 남촌의 독서인 兪晩柱가 책주릅[冊儈] 曺氏와의 서적 거래를 기록한 『欽英』의 자료를 분석해 18세기 조선에서 책이라는 재화가 갖는 물질성의 문제에 접근해 보았다. 유만주는 1784년 4월부터 1785년 7월까지 고가의 도서를 여러 종류 구매했다. 당시 그가 주로 거래한 책주릅 조씨는 조수삼과 정약용 등 동시대인이 목격한 ‘조신선’과 동일인이다. 1784년 4월 23일 유만주의 倉洞 집을 처음 방문한 조씨는 『珮文韻府』 등 4종의 책을 의뢰받았고, 유만주가 明洞의 고급주택으로 이주한 1784년 8월 이후로도 계속 그를 방문해 『文選』, 『패문운부』, 『人外脞史』, 『思辨錄輯要』, 『資治通鑑綱目』 및 그 시리즈에 해당하는 『續資治通鑑綱目』과 『資治通鑑綱目發明』 등 3종의 역사서 『合綱』까지 160냥 어치의 책을 차례로 판매했다. 한편 유만주는 책값을 융통하기가 쉽지 않은 처지였고, 조씨는 요청받은 도서목록집이나 중국본 역사서를 구하는 데 어려움이 있었다. 이런 이유로 두 사람의 거래가 갈등을 보인 1784년 11월 이래 유만주는 도서목록집 『浙江書目』을 소유한 ‘書客’과의 교유를 시작하며 호혜적 교환의 방식으로 원하는 책을 빌려 보기 시작했다. 이 서객은 『輸廫故人錄』과 『三朝要典』 寫本, 그리고 閔聖徽의 장서인이 압인된 서적들을 소장하고 있는 것으로 보아 추후 『흠영』에서 ‘凜’으로 불리게 되는 교유인물 閔景涑이 확실하다. 유만주와 민경속 사이의 교유가 본격화되며, 유만주와 책주릅 조씨의 거래 빈도는 현저히 줄었다. 유만주는 1784년 12월 22일에 『西遊記』를 구매하고 『합강』의 잔금을 지불했으며, 1785년 2월 3일에 『汪南溟集』 등 1냥 어치의 책을 구입했다. 그가 조씨에게 마지막으로 산 책은 『松雪學士全集』인데 이때 그는 돈 대신 해주 먹 20개를 지불했다. 조씨는 1785년 7월 18일에 유만주의 명동 집을 마지막으로 방문했고, 유만주는 이틀 후인 7월 20일에 도로 창동으로 집을 옮겼는데 이 이주는 유만주 가에 경제적으로 어려운 시기가 닥쳤음을 의미한다. 그리고 책주릅 조씨는 물질적 형편이 나빠진 유만주를 더 이상 찾아오지 않았다. This thesis tried to investigate the problem of the materiality of books in Joseon in the 18th century by analyzing the transactions between Yu Man-ju兪晩柱, a passionate reader in Seoul, and Mr. Jo曺氏, a book salesman, recorded in Yu Man-ju’ diary Heumyeong 『欽英』. During the period from April 1784 to July 1785, Yu Man-ju purchased several kinds of expensive books. At that time, Mr. Jo, whom he mainly dealt with were the same person as the Immortal Jo曺神仙, witnessed by his contemporaries such as Jo Su-sam趙秀三 and Jeong Yak-yong丁若鏞. On April 23, 1784, Jo visited Yu's house for the first time and was commissioned for four books including Paemununbu 『珮文韻府』. Also, after Yu Man-ju moved to a luxury house in August 1784, Jo continued to visit Yu and sell 160 nyang worth of books, including the books he was commissioned for and the books in the series. It was not easy for Yu to pay for the books, so he paid for some books in installments. And Jo had difficulties in obtaining a separately commissioned catalog of Chinese books or Chinese history books. Since November 1784, when the two men's dealings were in conflict, Yu Man-ju met an anonymous book collector called ‘seogaek’書客 who owned a catalog of Chinese books and started borrowing books in a reciprocal way. The anonymous book collector is presumed to be Min Kyeong-sok閔景涑, as he possesses the legacy of Min Seong-hwi閔聖徽, a legendary collector of Joseon. The relationship between Yu and Min started in earnest, and the frequency of transactions between Yu and Jo significantly decreased. The last time Yu bought Jo a book, he paid 20 sticks of ink instead of money. Jo last visited Yu's luxury home on July 18, 1785, and Yu moved to a cheaper house on July 20, two days later. The move means that Yu is facing a difficult time economically. And Jo no longer came to visit Yu, who was in a bad economic situation.
