<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The effect of a bis(proazaphosphatrane) ligand on the palladium‐catalyzed direct α‐arylation of nitriles with various aryl chlorides under mild conditions is reported. Comparisons of the catalytic properties of this ligand with those of three related mono(proazaphosphatrane)s under the same reaction conditions revealed that bis(proazaphosphatrane) displayed a synergistically enhanced activity. In the presence of the bis(proazaphosphatrane) ligand, ethyl cyanoacetate and primary as well as secondary nitriles were efficiently coupled with a wide variety of aryl chlorides that contained electron‐rich, electron‐poor, and electron‐neutral groups.</P>

<P>An association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D; vitamin D) deficiency and increased cardiovascular (CV) risk factors and CV disease (CVD) has been shown in general population studies. Vitamin D deficiency has been noted in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and CVD is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in SLE. The objectives of this study were to estimate the associations of 25(OH)D levels with CV risk factors and to determine whether low baseline 25(OH)D levels predict future CV events in patients participating in an international inception cohort.</P>

Corticotropin-releasing factor(CRF)를 분비하는 배양세포주는 CRF의 세포내 조절을 연구하는데 있어 훌륭한 체계가 된다. BE(2)-M17 및 BE(2)-C 세포주는 CRF를 생산하고 분비하며 forskolin 처치에 반응하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 이들 세포주에 phorbol 에스테르, 즉 phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate(TPA) 0.8, 4, 10, 20 nM, 및 nitric oxide(NO)의 신호전달 경로의 자극제(1-${\mu}M$ nitroprusside)와 차단제($1{\mu}M$ nitroprusside+$300{\mu}M$ $N^G$-methyl-D-arginine), 그리고 interleukin-$1{\alpha}$ (IL $1{\alpha}$ ; 4, 20, 100, 500 pM)를 처치하여 CRF를 의미있게 증가시켰으나 세포외 분비는 C 세포에서만 변화되었다. NOS계의 자극제와 차단제는 C 세포의 forskolin 효과를 의미있게 변화시켰다. IL$1{\alpha}$는 두 세포주에 대한 영향이 없었다. 상기 제제들에 대한 이들 세포의 반응이 중추신경계 CRF 신경들과 관련하여 논의되었다.
Use of Vanadium Oxide as a Liquid Phase Sintering Aid for Barium Hexaferrite

The use of V₂O5 as a liquid phase sintering aid for BaFe12O19 is studied. Three weight % of V₂O5 is added to a BaFe12O19 powder, samples are sintered at temperatures between 900-1250 °C and the effects of sintering aid addition on densification, microstructure, phase purity and magnetic properties are examined. Compared to BaFe12O19 without sintering aid addition, addition of 3 wt% V₂O5 leads to a moderate improvement in densification behavior. Samples with 3 wt% V₂O5 addition contain considerable amounts of Fe₂O₃ and Ba₃(VO₄)₂ second phases. The BaFe12O19 sample without sintering aid addition has a Magnetization-Field hysteresis loop typical of a hard ferrimagnetic material, whereas the 97 wt% BaFe12O19 - 3 wt% V₂O5 sample has a hysteresis loop with reduced saturation magnetization and coercivity.

<P>Emerging evidence indicates that myeloid cells are essential for promoting new blood vessel formation by secreting various angiogenic factors. Given that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a critical regulator for angiogenesis, we questioned whether HIF in myeloid cells also plays a role in promoting angiogenesis. To address this question, we generated a unique strain of myeloid-specific knockout mice targeting HIF pathways using human S100A8 as a myeloid-specific promoter. We observed that mutant mice where HIF-1 is transcriptionally activated in myeloid cells (by deletion of the von Hippel–Lindau gene) resulted in erythema, enhanced neovascularization in matrigel plugs, and increased production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the bone marrow, all of which were completely abrogated by either genetic or pharmacological inactivation of HIF-1. We further found that monocytes were the major effector producing VEGF and S100A8 proteins driving neovascularization in matrigel. Moreover, by using a mouse model of hindlimb ischemia we observed significantly improved blood flow in mice intramuscularly injected with HIF-1–activated monocytes. This study therefore demonstrates that HIF-1 activation in myeloid cells promotes angiogenesis through VEGF and S100A8 and that this may become an attractive therapeutic strategy to treat diseases with vascular defects.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The <I>N</I>‐arylation of various amines with aryl chlorides proceeded in good‐to‐excellent yields in the presence of P[N{(<I>p</I>‐NMe<SUB>2</SUB>)C<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>4</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>}CH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>]<SUB>3</SUB>N (<B>1e</B>, a new electron‐rich proazaphosphatrane ligand) and small amounts of Pd<SUB>2</SUB>(dba)<SUB>3</SUB> (dba = dibenzylideneacetone). This catalytic system was also very effective for the synthesis of carbazoles.</P>
