        황해와 한국연안해역 표층퇴적물중 Sb과 As의 농도분포특성

        We report the distributions of Sb and As in the surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea. The mean concentrations of Sb and As range from 0.68 ppm to 1.01 ppm and from 7.4 ppm to 15.8 ppm.. respective]), and show relatively the high concentrations at the coast of Weolseong in the East Sea for Sh and at the coast of Gadeok Island in the South Sea for As. This may be due to the anthropogenic input of these elements via river and atmosphere from industry complex and agriculture regions around the study areas. Because of the difference of clay to silt proportion. the correlation between silt plus clay contents and Sb. As in the coastal surface sediment of Korea is not shown, the concentrations of Sb and As vary widely for the sample in which the silt plus clay contents are the same. Therefore. we suggest that the distribution patterns of Sh and As in surface sediment of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are mainly controlled by the anthropogenic inputs and the sediment characteristics. On the other hand, the Sb concentrations are lower than those of the lowest effect level which is the standard of judgment for contamination, while the As concentrations are higher than those of the lowest effect level. This implies that the surface sediments of the Yellow Sea and the coastal areas of Korea are considerably contaminated for As.

        Objective : Our purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the transcatheter arterial embolization for the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods : 14 patients with massive or recurrent uterine bleeding underwent percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization between February 2003 and September 2004. We reviewed 14 cases of uterine artery or internal iliac artery embolization using gelfoam or PVA particles. Results : Good management of uterine bleeding was achieved in 13 of 14(93%) cases. The cause of abnormal uterine bleeding was myoma(5 case), post D & E bleeding(3), acquired vascular malformation(3), pseudoaneurysm(1), adenomyosis(1), and endometrial hyperplasia(1). Conclusion : Transcatheter artery embolization is an effective and life-saving procedure in massive or recurrent uterine bleeding. Early diagnosis and prompt transcatheter arterial embolization is a useful mangement of uterine bleeding.

        The Dentists’ View of Dental Hygienist Duties in Korea

        Background: The number and curriculum of dental hygienists in Korea have dramatically increased. Controversies have since resulted from insufficient job descriptions of the work performed by a dental hygienist. A dentist's perception was examined to legally reflect the actual work of dental hygienists. Methods: Four hundred and nineteen dentists were surveyed about the duties of a dental hygienist. Their views on the career and availability of each job were examined. The duties of the dental hygienist include 13 items in dental treatment preparation, 14 items of radiography, 21 items of preventive dentistry, 6 items of periodontal treatment, 12 items of oral medicine, 12 items of conservative dentistry, 8 items of prosthetics, 10 items of orthodontics, 7 items of oral and maxillofacial surgery, 6 items of implantation, 6 items of impression taking and model fabrication, 5 items of anesthesia and injection, 11 items of management and administrative, and 3 items of self-development. Results: Most of the duties were doable by a dental hygienist. Many dentists reported that managing implants, oral hygiene of special patients, some duties in oral medicine, teeth brightening, making temporary crowns, making individual trays, selecting shades, ligaturing, and precision impressions need ≥3 years of experience. Duties perceived by dentists not to be performed by dental hygienists were reading radiographs (55.4%), suture and stitch out (48.0%), intramuscular injection (36.0%), root planning (27.2%), cementation and removal of prostheses (23.2%), and examining pulp vitality (22.0%). Conclusion: Current laws are to be revised to include, the care provided by dental hygienists and under a physician’s supervision. Flexibility is also needed to cope with rapidly changing dental technology.

        Analysis of Cytokines in Umbilical Cord Blood-derived Multipotent Stem Cell

        Human umbilical cord blood (UCB)-derived multipotent stem cells are regarded as valuable sources for cell transplantation and cell therapy. These cells, under appropriate culture conditions, can differentiate into a variety of cell lineages such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and neuronal cells. Based on their large ex vivo expansion capacity as well as their differentiation potential, UCB-derived multipotent stem cells may become a suitable source for clinical transplantation in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. All modern protocols involve the use of cytokines with chemotherapy in order to increase the circulation of stem cells in the blood. Because UCB, in general, produce less cytokine, or have a lower frequency of cytokine producing cells compared to adult stem cells, further research in cytokines related to the cell proliferation, cellular adhesion and cell migration is necessary to improve the understanding of the basic mechanisms of stem cell mobilization. This paper gives an overview of the cytokines produced by UCB-derived multipotent stem cells, and strongly suggests that cytokine induction and signal transduction is important for the differentiation of these cells.

        Cisplatin 항암요법 후 발생한 신성 염분소실 증후군 1예

        Cisplatin is widely used for chemotherapy, but known to cause renal, auditory, hematologic, gastrointestinal, and neurologic toxicities. Hyponatremia after administration of cisplatin is related to renal tubular sodium excretion. A 71-year-old female was referred to our hospital for chemotherapy of laryngeal cancer. On admission, the patient`s laboratory data were normal. The patient received for 3 days chemotherapy without complication, but presented mental confusion on the 4th hospital day. The laboratory findings were as follows; serum sodium was 118 mmol/L, urine sodium 163 mmol/L, serum osmolality 248 mmol/kg, and urine osmolality 594 mmol/kg. On physical exam, volume status was hypovolemic, so we supplied hypertonic and isotonic salines. On the 9th hospital day, she showed normal sodium concentration and clear consciousness. After chemotherapy, we should make differential diagnosis between SIADH (syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone) and renal salt wasting syndrome according to the physical examination. We report a case of renal salt wasting syndrome with severe mental change after chemotherapy using cisplatin.

      • Effect of zirconium content on the microstructure, physical properties and corrosion behavior of Ti alloys

        A series of Ti-xZr alloys with Zr contents ranging from 5 to 20wt% was prepared and the effects of Zr addition on the microstructure, physical properties, and corrosion behavior of Ti alloys were investigated. The phase and microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Ti-xZr alloys exhibited α-Ti structure at Zr content of 20wt% or below. Commercially pure titanium (cp-Ti) was used as a control. We also investigated the effects of alloying element Zr on the mechanical property, oxidation protection ability, and corrosion behavior of Ti-xZr binary alloys. The physical properties and corrosion behavior of Ti-xZr alloys were sensitive to the Zr content. The addition of Zr did contribute to the hardening of cp-Ti due to solid-solution strengthening of α-Ti. Ti-xZr alloys containing up to 10wt% Zr resulted in good oxidation resistance, while Ti-xZr alloys with above 10wt% Zr demonstrated higher oxidation weight gain than cp-Ti. Electrochemical experiments showed that the Ti-xZr alloys exhibited better corrosion resistance compared to that of cp-Ti.

        Effect of Subconjunctivally Injected Liposome-Encapsulated Tissue Plasminogen Activator on the Absorption Rate of Subconjunctival Hemorrhages in Rabbits

        PURPOSE:: To evaluate the effect of subconjunctivally injected liposome-encapsulated tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) on the absorption rate of subconjunctival hemorrhages (SHs). METHODS:: SHs were induced in 1 eye each of 36 rabbits by subconjunctival injection of 0.05 mL of autologous blood. After 8 hours, randomized subconjunctival injections were performed: 26,000 IU/mL liposome-encapsulated tPA (0.05 mL) in 9 eyes (group A), free-form tPA (26,000 IU/mL; 0.05 mL) in 9 eyes (group B), only liposomes (0.05 mL) in 9 eyes (group C), or no injection in 9 eyes (group D). The sizes of the SHs at 8, 24, 48, 72, 96, and 120 hours after induction were measured using an image analyzer and were compared among the 4 groups. RESULTS:: Group A showed significantly more rapid absorption rates than all the other groups at 24, 48, and 72 hours and had the significantly shortest mean elapsed time for the complete resorption of SHs. The tPA activity in ocular tissue except conjunctiva and plasma were negligible beyond 24 hours after SH induction with both forms of tPA. In the conjunctiva, the tPA activity was significantly prolonged in the liposome-encapsulated tPA group than in the free tPA group. CONCLUSIONS:: Subconjunctival injection of liposome-encapsulated tPA seems to enhance SH absorption in rabbits, especially during the early stages with minimal systemic and ocular absorption.

      • Davallialactone from Mushroom Reduced Premature Senescence and Inflammation on Glucose Oxidative Stress in Human Diploid Fibroblast Cells

        <P>Mushrooms are both food and a source of natural compounds of biopharmaceutical interest. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether davallialactone from mushroom extract affected the pathogenesis of hyperglycemia oxidative stress and the aging process in human diploid fibroblast (HDF) cells. The high-glucose state with glucose oxidase resulted in glucose oxidative stress, induction of inflammatory molecules, dysfunction of antioxidant molecules, and activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPKs) and its downstream signaling in old HDF cells. The exposure of glucose oxidative stress in middle-stage cells led to stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) via senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA β-gal) activity and displayed replicative senescence phenomena. However, davallialactone reduces the pathogenesis of glucose oxidative stress and the aging process through down-regulation of SA β-gal activity. These results strongly suggest that natural compounds, especially mushroom extract davallialactone, improve the pathogenesis of glucose oxidative stress and the aging process.         Impact of Polymorphisms of TLR4/CD14 and TLR3 on Acute Rejection in Kidney Transplantation

        BACKGROUND.: Organ transplantation itself inevitably activates the innate immune system by toll-like receptors (TLRs), potentially leading to allograft rejection and graft failure. We evaluated the possible association between the TLR4/CD14 and TLR3 polymorphisms of donor-recipient pairs, and acute rejection after living donor kidney transplantation. METHODS.: TLR4 −1607T/C (rs10759932), −2026A/G (rs1927914); CD14 −159C/T (rs2569190); and TLR3 rs3775290, rs3775291, and rs3775296 were genotyped using DNA samples from 216 donor-recipient pairs of adult living donor kidney transplantation between January 1996 and July 2006. Dual luciferase reporter assay was performed to determine the functional significance of promoter single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of TLR4. RESULTS.: Acute rejection occurred in 42 recipients (19.4%) of 216 adult transplant patients within 1 year. The genotype distributions of both recipient and donor TLR4 rs10759932 differed significantly between the control (no rejection) and acute rejection groups. For recipient rs10759932, the adjusted odds ratio for the TC+CC over TT genotype was 0.25 (95% confidence interval, 0.11–0.57; P =0.001). When the rs10759932 CC genotype was present in the recipient or donor, no episode of acute rejection occurred (Fisher’s exact test, P =0.023). The presence of the rs10759932 C allele was associated with higher rejection-free survival rates (log-rank test, P =0.0053). However, there was no difference in transcriptional activity between wild-type and variant promoters of TLR4. In contrast to TLR4, SNPs of TLR3 or CD14 had no influence on acute rejection. CONCLUSION.: These findings suggest the importance of TLR4 in the pathogenesis of acute rejection in kidney transplantation.
