        Hypoparathyroidism in children and adolescents

        Hypoparathyroidism is characterized by insufficient parathyroid hormone (PTH) release from the parathyroid glands to maintain serum calcium level within normal limits and unresponsiveness of target tissues despite normal serum PTH level. Hypoparathyroidism is defined as low or inappropriately normal serum PTH level. In this narrative review, we discuss the etiology of hypoparathyroidism in children.

        Turkish Version of Kolcaba's Immobilization Comfort Questionnaire: A Validity and Reliability Study

        Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Immobilization Comfort Questionnaire (ICQ). Methods: The sample used in this methodological study consisted of 121 patients undergoing lower extremity arthroscopy in a training and research hospital. The validity study of the questionnaire assessed language validity, structural validity and criterion validity. Structural validity was evaluated via exploratory factor analysis. Criterion validity was evaluated by assessing the correlation between the visual analog scale (VAS) scores (i.e., the comfort and pain VAS scores) and the ICQ scores using Spearman's correlation test. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin coefficient and Bartlett's test of sphericity were used to determine the suitability of the data for factor analysis. Internal consistency was evaluated to determine reliability. The data were analyzed with SPSS version 15.00 for Windows. Descriptive statistics were presented as frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. A p value .05 was considered statistically significant. Results: A moderate positive correlation was found between the ICQ scores and the VAS comfort scores; a moderate negative correlation was found between the ICQ and the VAS pain measures in the criterion validity analysis. Cronbach a values of .75 and .82 were found for the first and second measurements, respectively. Conclusions: The findings of this study reveal that the ICQ is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the comfort of patients in Turkey who are immobilized because of lower extremity orthopedic problems.

        Clarithromycin Resistance Prevalence and Icea Gene Status in Helicobacter Pylori Clinical Isolates in Turkish Patients with Duodenal Ulcer and Functional Dyspepsia

        Clarithromycin resistance in Helicobacter pylori is a principal cause of failure of eradication therapies, and its prevalence varies geographically. The IceA gene is a virulence factor associated with clinical outcomes. The objective of this study was to determine the current state of clarithromycin resistance prevalence, and to investigate the role of iceA genotypes in 87 Turkish adult patients (65 with functional dyspepsia and 22 with duodenal ulcer). A2143G and A2144G point mutations were tested by PCR RFLP for clarithromycin resistance. Among the patients in the study, 28 patients were tested by agar dilution as well. Allelic variants of the iceA gene were identified by PCR. A total of 24 (27.6%) strains evidenced one of the mutations, either A2143G or A2144G. IceA1 was found to be positive in 28 of the strains (32.2%), iceA2 was positive in 12 (13.8%) and, both iceA1 and iceA2 were positive in 22 (25.3%) strains. In conclusion, we discovered no relationships between iceA genotypes and functional dyspepsia or duodenal ulcer, nor between clarithromycin resistance and iceA genotypes. Clarithromycin resistance appears to be more prevalent in Turkish patients.

        Study on gamma radiation attenuation and non-ionizing shielding effectiveness of Niobium-reinforced novel polymer composite

        Advanced radiation applications have been widely used and extended to many fields. As a result of thisfact, choosing an appropriate shielding material based on the radiation application has become vital. Inthis regard, the integration of elements into polymer composites has been investigated and contributedto the quantity and quality of radiation shielding materials. This study reports photon attenuation parametersand electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of a novel polymer composite prepared with amatrix reinforced with three different proportions (5, 10, and 15 wt%) of niobium content. Addition of Nbdopant improves both photon attenuation and electromagnetic shielding effectiveness for the investigatedcomposites. Therefore, Nb(15%) polymer composite with highest concentration has been found tobe the best absorber for ionizing and non-ionizing radiations. Consequently, the performed analyzesprovide evidences that the prepared Nb-reinforced polymer composite could be effectively used asphoton radiation attenuator and electromagnetic shielding material

        Grain growth kinetics in the xAl2O3−6wt. % Bi2O3 − (94-x) ZnO (x = 0, 2, 4) ceramic system

        The effects of the amount of Al2O3 (0, 2 and 4 wt.%) on the microstructural properties have been studied in a binary ZnO-6 wt% Bi2O3 system. The microstructure of the samples consists mainly of ZnO grains with β-Bi2O3 and ZnAl2O4 spinel as the secondary phases. The grain growth kinetics in the 0, 2 and 4wt.% Al2O3 added ZnO-6wt.% Bi2O3 system were studied using the simplified phenomenological grain growth kinetics equation together with the physical properties of the sintered samples. The grain growth exponent value (n) and the apparent activation energy for the ZnO-6 wt.% Bi2O3 system were 5 and 218 kJ/mol, respectively. The addition of the Al2O3 to the ZnO-6 wt.% Bi2O3 system inhibited the ZnO grain growth. At 2 and 4 wt.% Al2O3 additions, the apparent activation energies were calculated as 341 and 578 kJ/mol respectively. The addition of Al2O3 to the system inhibited the grain growth of ZnO ceramics.         Temperature Dependence of Raman-active Modes of TlGaS2 Layered Crystals: an Anharmonicity Study

        The temperature dependence (16 - 300 K) of unpolarized Raman spectra from TlGaS2 layered crystals was measured in the frequency range of 10 - 400 cmThe analysis of the experimental data showed that the temperature dependencies of the phonon frequencies and linewidths were well described by considering the contributions from thermal expansion and lattice anharmonicity. The anharmonic contribution (phonon-phonon coupling) was found to be due to three-phonon processes. The present work demonstrates that the interlayer Raman mode at 42.6 cmshifts toward high frequency as the temperature is raised from 16 to 300 K.

        Donor-Acceptor Pair Recombination in Tl2InGaS4 Layered Crystals

        Photoluminescence (PL) spectra of Tl2InGaS4 layered single crystals were studied in the temperaturerange 15 – 150 K and wide laser excitation intensity range 0.01 – 110.34 Wcm−2. We observed a total of three PL bands, one centered at 542 nm (2.286 eV, A-band), one at 607 nm (2.041 eV,B-band), and one at 707 nm (1.754 eV, C-band), at various excitation intensities. The A- and the B-bands were determined to be due to radiative transitions from moderately deep donor levels located at 0.189 and 0.443 eV below the bottom of the conduction band to the shallow acceptor levels at 0.025 and 0.016 eV above the top of the valence band, respectively. The blue shift of the C-band peak energy and the quenching of the PL with increasing temperature are explained within the configuration coordinate model. The observation in the PL spectra of different emission bands in the sequence of B-, C- and A-bands at low, moderate, and high excitation laser intensities,respectively, are attributed to the shift of the quasi-Fermi level with increasing excitation intensity.

        Trap Distribution in TlInS2 Layered Crystals from Thermally Stimulated Current Measurements

        We have carried out thermally stimulated current (TSC) measurements with the current flowing along the layer on as-grown TlInS₂ layered single crystals in the low temperature range 10 -- 110 K with different heating rates of 0.1 -- 1.5 K/s. Experimental evidence was found for the presence of two shallow electron trapping centers with activation energies of 12 and 14 meV. Their capture cross sections have been determined as 2.2 × 10-²³ and 7.1 × 10-25 ㎠, respectively. It was concluded that retrapping in these centers is negligible, which was confirmed by the good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions of the model that assumed slow retrapping. An exponential distribution of electron traps was revealed from the analysis of the TSC data obtained at different light excitation temperatures. This experimental technique provided a value of 27 meV/decade for the trap distribution. The parameters of the monoclinic unit cell were determined by studying the X-ray powder diffraction.         Clinicopathologic Characteristics and Therapeutic Outcomes of Primary Gastrointestinal Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas in Central Anatolia, in Turkey

        We carried out a retrospective analysis of 74 patients who were presented to our center with histopathological diagnosis of primary gastro-intestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma between 1990 and 2001. All patients have been staged according to Lugano Staging System. For histopathological classification, International Working Formulation was applied. The treatment choice concerning the surgical or non-surgical management was decided by the initially acting physician. Treatment modalities were compared using the parameters of age, sex, histopathological results, stage, and the site of disease. Of the 74 patients, 31 werefemale and 43 were male, with a median age of 49 years (range 15-80). The stomach was the most common primary site and was seenin 51 of 74 patients (68.9%). The intermediate and high grade lymphomas constituted 91.9% of the all cases. In a median follow-up of 29 months (range 2-128), 20 out of 74 patients died. There was a three year overall survival rate in 65.4% of all patients. The three year overall survival rate was better in stage I and II1 patients who were treated with surgery plus chemotherapy (+/-RT) than those treated with chemotherapy alone (93.7% vs. 55.6%, p 0.05). The stage and presence of B symptoms affected the disease free survival and overall survival significantly, but the histopathologic grade only affected the overall survival. On the basis of these results, we suggest that surgicalresection is necessary before chemotherapy in early stage (stage I and II1) patients with gastrointestinal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas because of the significant survival advantage it would bring to the patient.
