The Effect of Instruction Using English Movies in Learning Attitude and Achievements in College Education

        Lee, Eunpyo,Kim, Eun-Kyung 미래영어영문학회 2016 영어영문학 Vol.21 No.3

This paper examines the effect of using English movies in learning attitude and achievements in a graduation certification replacement course. The subjects were 10 seniors who haven’t obtained the minimum TOEIC requirement scores to be eligible to graduate and therefore, mandatorily took the course in summer of 2015. The course used 5 English movies and the subjects were to dictate what they could hear from the movies, make presentation after each movie, and to complete the questionnaire to learn their motivation and attitude toward the course. Pre- and post-mock TOEIC tests were administered to compare the results. The subjects’ dictation was analyzed to see the improvement in their listening. The study also compared the results with those of Lee’s(2014) study on the same course not using movies. The results of the study showed improvement of 22 points whereas only 11 points were improved among the ones without movie watching. The attitudes of the subjects were noticeably better among the movie-watching group and the class was manageable unlike the previous courses. It can be concluded that using movies in the class for the students’ motivation and learning attitude especially the ones whose TOEIC scores are very low and without motivation to study English. However, selection of the movies has to consider students’ interest, theme and length of the movie.

A Review of an Enhancement Course for College Students' Standardized English Test

Lee, Eunpyo,Shin, Myeong-Hee The English Teachers Association in Korea 2012 영어어문교육 Vol.18 No.1

This study reviews an English enhancement course implemented for medical and nursing college students of 2011 to improve their standardized English test scores. A total of 117 first-year students underwent the pre-test and the post-TOEIC in November 2011. After the pre-test, lectures on listening enhancement strategies and problem solving tactics on reading comprehension were supplemented with 4 times of enhancement-tests. Their pre- and post-TOEIC results were compared to see if such enhancement strategies were effective to improve their TOEIC scores. It was further to investigate, through survey questionnaires, how the subjects felt about a number of pre-test-type TOEIC exercise with what-to-listen and how-to-infer listening strategies and pattern-drill practices for reading comprehension. It was found that the scores of listening comprehension improved significantly for both major students whereas reading scores showed slight decrease among nursing majors. It is concluded that administering numerous pre-test-type-TOEIC exercise is effective for students to improve their listening scores supplemented with listening strategies Also, students' response showed positive toward the enhancement course.

      • Comparative Study on Autonomous Learner Group And Blended Learner Group

Eunpyo Lee 미래영어영문학회 2012 미래영어영문학회 학술대회 자료집 Vol.2012 No.12

This study examines whether the autonomous learner group performs any differently from the blended learner group in language learning especially on the standardized test by analyzing their pre- and post-TOEIC scores. The subjects of the blended learner group were 42 medical and 75 nursing students, enrolled in the 2010 English course. This group of learners participated in the 15-week-course that consisted of lectures, studies with multimedia device, and progress check through follow-up practice drills for the TOEIC test. The autonomous group comprised 39 clinical pathology major students who volunteered to take the TOEIC test without registering in the researcher’s English course. The results indicated that the blended learner group significantly improved on their post-TOEIC test by 65.7 and 54.8 points in average, respectively whereas the autonomous group showed slight increase of 21.0 points. Even university students do not seem to facilitate autonomy in language learning. It is concluded that English teacher’s guidance, lectures, and other relevant learning materials using technology are necessary for better performance on the standardized English test and furthermore, efficient language learning.

A Study on Examining Nursing Journal Abstract

Lee, Eunpyo,Shin, Myeong-Hee The English Teachers Association in Korea 2011 영어어문교육 Vol.17 No.4

This paper examines nursing professionals' English abstract to learn their preferences towards tense and voice choices. A total of 24 abstracts, completed reviews to be published by the editorial board members of the Korea Industrial Nursing Association, were analyzed for the study. Each sentence in the four parts of the abstract (Purpose, Methods, Results, and Conclusion) was examined and classified into active/passive voices, and present/past/present perfect tenses. Verbs were then further identified to see which ones were commonly preferred to state the objectives of the study, methods, and to draw conclusions. Hedging expressions in Conclusion were also examined. The results of the present study revealed that Purpose was mostly (79%) stated in the past tense with slight use (17%) of the present tense in the form of 58% active and 42% passive voice whereas Methods were dominantly (96%) illustrated in the past tense with preference of mixed active and passive voice. The Results were also preferably (92%) stated in past tense and Conclusion in both present and past tense. Verbs used by these nursing professionals seemed diverse; however, hedging appeared to be narrowly limited to a few expressions including suggest and should. More diverse English hedging expressions need to be taught at least college level writing so that the EFL learners and writers can have a better understanding of presenting statements in an appropriate level of caution, confidence, or uncertainty.

Student Presentation as a Means of Learning English for Upper Intermediate to Advanced Level Students

( Eunpyo Lee ),( Mira Park ) 범태평양 응용언어학회 2008 Journal of Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Ling Vol.12 No.1

This study observes and examines how upper intermediate to advanced level college students perform and perceive one-topic-for-each student presentation as a means of learning English. It is also to have the prospective medical doctors ready for their future use of English presentation and paper writing since such demand is on the rise in the medical field. The 49 second year medical students enrolled in English reading and writing class of spring semester 2008 were given a single topic for each at least two weeks prior to their presentation in class as part of writing assignment. They were encouraged to be creative, informative and fun to induce class participation. At the end of the semester, the questionnaire was given to learn of students’ opinion on the presentation. Based on the presentation and questionnaire, the data were analyzed to see if preparing and giving presentation was conducive for medical students. The results revealed that students wrote an average of 51-sentence (587 words) paper, almost double the previous year writing assignment. And 92% of the students felt presentation on different topics was interesting and helpful for learning English, and 80% of them felt having presentation in class was more effective than the traditional face-to-face lecture classes. More than two-thirds of the students (69%) thought that preparing for their class presentation provided them with a chance to learn new vocabulary, expressions as well as knowledge in English. The results of the study show that presentation on various topics can be used as a means of learning English for upper intermediate to advanced level students.

Classification of the research topic was focused on the 4 skills of the language, grammar and vocabulary, literature, linguistics and all the rest areas were categorized into others. From the results of the study, suggestions for the future ETAK in the Korean English teaching were to be given.

      • MEMS-Based Energy Harvesting System Using Self-Organized Heart Muscle Cells

        Eunpyo Choi(최은표),Sung Q Lee(이성규),Tae Yun Kim(김태윤),Kyoung J. Lee(이경진),Jungyul Park(박정열) 대한기계학회 2009 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2009 No.11

A novel hybrid MEMS-based energy harvesting system is developed using activation of heart muscle cell. Heart muscle cells from rats are cultured on the lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate(PMN-PT) single crystal diaphragm fabricated by MEMS technology. The mechanical stress induced by contraction forces from heart muscle cell is conversed into electrical power by piezoelectric effect. A PMN-PT materials exhibit extraordinary piezoelectric properties and are a kind of biocompatibility materials. This PMN-PT single crystal diaphragm has one-side interdigitated electrode design, which makes it possible that an external stress applied to the diaphragm results in output voltage by piezoelectric effect. After in vitro culture of heart muscle cell, we successfully measured the output signal of voltage from this hybrid MEMS power generator. This result shows the possibility that our power generator can be used as an alternative micropower source for the micro implantable systems or micro/nano-robots. Moreover, it can be applied to study a quantitative understanding of the mechanism of heart failure by measuring the contraction force from cardiomyocytes.

A Study of TOEIC Results and College Recruiting Policy

        Eunpyo Lee 한국영어어문교육학회 2005 영어어문교육 Vol.11 No.3

There have been changes throughout the past 100 years of English education in Korea. The Ministry of Education revised the English curriculum numerous times. From the 6th national curriculum, communicative competence became an essential objective in English learning. The study is to see if E University students' TOEIC results show any significant difference between the two groups under the 5th and 6th national curriculum. Another objective of this research is to see if recruiting medical students with high scores of the standardized English tests is suitable to select the best candidates who can fulfill medical studies. For these two purposes, sophomore students' TOEIC results in 2000 & 2004 and non-resident-status students’ cumulative GPA were analyzed. The study shows that there is no significant difference in the two groups. Moreover, the current recruiting policy to select the best fit medical candidates based on their high TOEIC or TOEFL scores does not seem to be an appropriate measure since such students' GPA reveals poor academic performance amid their high scores in English.

A Review on Extra-curricular English Course in Replacement of Graduation Certification

( Eunpyo Lee ),( Eun Kyung Kim ) 범태평양 응용언어학회 2014 Journal of Pan-Pacific Association of Applied Ling Vol.18 No.2

This study examines an extra-curricular English course that gives a chance for the low-proficient seniors who have not yet met the graduation qualification to graduate upon completion of 90 hours of English program. The subjects were 14 seniors who failed to obtain the minimum requirement scores and had to complete the course in summer of 2014. A total of 5 sets of the TOEIC mock-tests were administered to see if the subjects made any progress in each test after providing lectures on the tips to improve listening skills and test scores. The study analyzed the results of the TOEIC L/C, subjects`` translation sheets and the questionnaire at the end of the course. Subjects`` personality factors were mainly focused for the study. The affective domain by Krathwohl, Bloom, and Masia (1964) was adopted to investigate the subjects`` learning factors along with their motivation. Based on the results of the study, the extra-curricular English course seemed ineffective as the subjects`` perception of the course was extremely nonchalant without any desire and motivation to learn. Their willingness to learn English was practically non-existent in each class presumably partly due to the lenient nature of the course and pressure to focus on their national qualification exam. It is recommended to provide a more practical course that includes testing the students and that reinforces a learning environment. The course is advised to be offered in the 3rd year so during the senior year, students can put in their effort on more urgent priority such as national nursing test and/or national biomedical laboratory science test.
