Ought-to L2 Self and Its Influence on L2 Motivation and Demotivation: A Case of College English Majors

        Eunbi Kwon 한국영어교육학회 2023 ENGLISH TEACHING(영어교육) Vol.78 No.4

This paper investigates L2 motivation and demotivation of college English majors in a Korean junior college. The participants’ L2 (de)motivation was explored by the oughtto L2 self, an element of the L2 motivational self system. Data were collected from two rounds of interviews with 59 and 31 students in all four years and analyzed qualitatively. The sources of the ought-to L2 self varied; however, it was a matter of how the participants recognized others’ expectations and pressure (i.e., manageable or beyond control). It was also relevant to how they comprehended and internalized these external influences for their L2 learning and (de)motivation. The findings indicate that the oughtto L2 self could be a contributing factor in sustaining L2 motivation and exerting effort. Finally, this paper calls for more needs to ensure and promote personalized and meaningful L2 learning for college English major students.

Paracrine influence of human perivascular cells on the proliferation of adenocarcinoma alveolar epithelial cells

        Eunbi Kim,Sunghun Na,Borim An,Se-Ran Yang,Woo Jin Kim,Kwon-Soo Ha,Eun-Taek Han,Won Sun Park,Chang-Min Lee,Ji Yoon Lee,Seung-Joon Lee,Seok-Ho Hong 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 2017 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.21 No.2

Understanding the crosstalk mechanisms between perivascular cells (PVCs) and cancer cells might be beneficial in preventing cancer development and metastasis. In this study, we investigated the paracrine influence of PVCs derived from human umbilical cords on the proliferation of lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells (A549) and erythroleukemia cells (TF-1α and K562)<i> in vitro</i> using TranswellⓇ co-culture systems. PVCs promoted the proliferation of A549 cells without inducing morphological changes, but had no effect on the proliferation of TF-1α and K562 cells. To identify the factors secreted from PVCs, conditioned media harvested from PVC cultures were analyzed by antibody arrays. We identified a set of cytokines, including persephin (PSPN), a neurotrophic factor, and a key regulator of oral squamous cell carcinoma progression. Supplementation with PSPN significantly increased the proliferation of A549 cells. These results suggested that PVCs produced a differential effect on the proliferation of cancer cells in a cell-type dependent manner. Further, secretome analyses of PVCs and the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms could facilitate the discovery of therapeutic target(s) for lung cancer.

A Review of Recent Evidence from Meal-Based Diet Interventions and Clinical Biomarkers for Improvement of Glucose Regulation

        Yeseung Jeong,Eunbi Lee,Yoon Jung Park,Yangha Kim,Oran Kwon,Yuri Kim 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.25 No.1

In recent decades, the prevalence of diabetes has rapidly increased worldwide. Medical nutrition therapy has been identified as a major therapeutic support for diabetic patients, while preventive strategies in prediabetic or high-risk individuals have mainly focused on supplementation with bioactive compounds. Recently, meal-based interventions have been investigated as novel and safe long-term strategies for improving glucose regulation. However, evaluation of meal-based interventions is difficult since it requires analysis of sensitive markers. Biomarkers can also be used to identify individuals at risk for diabetes, which is important for disease prevention. In this review, we summarize current evidence from meal-based intervention studies conducted with the aim of improving glucose homeostasis in individuals at risk of diabetes using clinical biomarkers currently used to assess diabetic risk. Very low-calorie diets have significantly improved glucose regulation in obese adults and in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In particular, changing the ratios of macronutrients through calorie restriction reduces fasting glucose level and hemoglobin A1c levels in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, this effect is limited in both obese and healthy adults. To date, multiple glucose-related markers have been identified as clinical biomarkers of diabetes. Additional clinical biomarkers include cholesterol levels, hematological markers, and inflammatory markers. Taken together, the evidence presented in this review may help for selection of clinical biomarkers for meal-based preventive approaches for non- or pre-diabetic individuals to prevent onset of diabetes.

Probabilistic Modeling of Fish Growth in Smart Aquaculture Systems

( Jongwon Kim ),( Eunbi Park ),( Sungyoon Cho ),( Kiwon Kwon ),( Young Myoung Ko ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2023 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.17 No.8

We propose a probabilistic fish growth model for smart aquaculture systems equipped with IoT sensors that monitor the ecological environment. As IoT sensors permeate into smart aquaculture systems, environmental data such as oxygen level and temperature are collected frequently and automatically. However, there still exists data on fish weight, tank allocation, and other factors that are collected less frequently and manually by human workers due to technological limitations. Unlike sensor data, human-collected data are hard to obtain and are prone to poor quality due to missing data and reading errors. In a situation where different types of data are mixed, it becomes challenging to develop an effective fish growth model. This study explores the unique characteristics of such a combined environmental and weight dataset. To address these characteristics, we develop a preprocessing method and a probabilistic fish growth model using mixed data sampling (MIDAS) and overlapping mixtures of Gaussian processes (OMGP). We modify the OMGP to be applicable to prediction by setting a proper prior distribution that utilizes the characteristic that the ratio of fish groups does not significantly change as they grow. We conduct a numerical study using the eel dataset collected from a real smart aquaculture system, which reveals the promising performance of our model.

결명자 에탄올 추출물이 알코올로 유도로 유도한 기억 장애에 미치는 영향

        권희영(Huiyoung Kwon),조은비(Eunbi Cho),전지은(Jieun Jeon),이영춘(Young Choon Lee),김동현(Dong Hyun Kim) 한국생명과학회 2019 생명과학회지 Vol.29 No.5

Heavy drinking disrupts the nervous system by activation of GABA receptors and inhibition of glutamate receptors, thereby preventing short-term memory formation. Degradation of cognition by alcohol induces blackouts, and it can lead to alcoholic dementia if repeated. Therefore, drugs need to be developed to prevent alcohol-induced blackout. In this study, we confirmed the effect of an ethanol extract of Cassia obtusifolia seeds (COE) on alcohol-induced memory impairment. The effects of COE and ethanol on cognitive functions mice were examined using the passive avoidance and Y-maze tests. The manner in which alcohol affects long-term potentiation (LTP) in relation to the learning and memory was confirmed by electrophysiology performed on mouse hippocampal slices. We also measured N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor-mediated field excitatory synapses (fEPSPs), which have a known association with cognitive impairment caused by ethanol. Ethanol caused memory impairments in passive avoidance and Y-maze tests. COE prevented these ethanol-induced memory impairments in these tests. Ethanol also blocked LTP induction in the mouse hippocampus, and COE prevented this ethanol-induced LTP deficit. Ethanol decreased NMDA receptor-mediated fEPSPs in the mouse hippocampus, and this decrease was prevented by COE. These results suggest that COE might be useful in preventing alcohol-induced neurological dysfunctions, including blackouts.
