      • THE PERSONALIZATION-PRIVACY PARADOX: EXAMINING THE IMPACT OF TARGETING DISCLOSURES ON CONSUMER BEHAVIOR IN ONLINE PRIVACY

Rachel Esther Lim,Yoon Hi Sung,Eun Yeon Kang,Kacy Kim 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2023 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2023 No.07

This research intends to examine whether these types of data – behavioral versus social networking data – affect consumer response to personalized ads. With the advancement in technology, marketers have access to various types of personal data, including their online/offline behaviors and social networking activities, and use those data to retarget consumers. Moreover, this research examines the moderating role of SNS privacy concerns on consumer response to different types of retargeted ads. The findings of this research may offer theoretical and practical implications to understand consumers' responses to retargeted ads that use social networking information.

Gliadin intake induces oxidative-stress responses in <i>Caenorhabditis elegans</i>

        Lim, So Dug,Min, Hyemin,Youn, Esther,Kawasaki, Ichiro,Shim, Yhong-Hee Elsevier 2018 Biochemical and biophysical research communication Vol.503 No.3

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Clinical attention to gluten-related disorders, such as celiac disease and nonceliac gluten sensitivity, is on the rise. However, identifying the pathophysiological mechanisms of gluten-related disorders remains elusive. Gliadin, a component of gluten, is known to play a major role in gluten toxicity. <I>Caenorhabditis elegans</I> has been widely used as the predominant experimental animal model to study toxicity and stress response in biomedical research. We investigated the stress response induced by gliadin intake in <I>C. elegans</I> to evaluate its toxicity and found brood size, body bending, and pumping rates to be significantly altered in response to gliadin. Notably, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and <I>Pgst-4::GFP</I> transgene expression, an indicator of the oxidative-stress response, were significantly increased after gliadin intake. Reduced pumping rates were most likely caused by gliadin-induced oxidative stress, since pumping rates in oxidative stress-sensitive <I>mev-1</I> mutants were more severely reduced than in oxidative stress-resistant <I>daf-2</I> mutants following gliadin intake. Our results indicated that gluten/gliadin intake in <I>C. elegans</I> triggered ROS production and induced an oxidative stress response that reduced pumping rates and decreased brood size. We suggest <I>C. elegans</I> to be a useful model system for studying gluten/gliadin toxicity.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Locomotion behavior and brood size were reduced in <I>C. elegans</I> fed with gliadin. </LI> <LI> ROS production and oxidative-stress responses were increased with gliadin intake. </LI> <LI> Reduction in pumping rate was caused by the gliadin-induced oxidative stress. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • DRG2 Deficient Mice Exhibit Impaired Motor Behaviors with Reduced Striatal Dopamine Release

        Lim, Hye Ryeong,Vo, Mai-Tram,Kim, Dong Jun,Lee, Unn Hwa,Yoon, Jong Hyuk,Kim, Hyung-Jun,Kim, Jeongah,Kim, Sang Ryong,Lee, Jun Yeon,Yang, Chae Ha,Kim, Hee Young,Choi, June-Seek,Kim, Kijeong,Yang, Esther MDPI AG 2020 INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MOLECULAR SCIENCES Vol.21 No.1

<P>Developmentally regulated GTP-binding protein 2 (DRG2) was first identified in the central nervous system of mice. However, the physiological function of DRG2 in the brain remains largely unknown. Here, we demonstrated that knocking out DRG2 impairs the function of dopamine neurons in mice. DRG2 was strongly expressed in the neurons of the dopaminergic system such as those in the striatum (Str), ventral tegmental area (VTA), and substantia nigra (SN), and on neuronal cell bodies in high-density regions such as the hippocampus (HIP), cerebellum, and cerebral cortex in the mouse brain. DRG2 knockout (KO) mice displayed defects in motor function in motor coordination and rotarod tests and increased anxiety. However, unexpectedly, DRG2 depletion did not affect the dopamine (DA) neuron population in the SN, Str, or VTA region or dopamine synthesis in the Str region. We further demonstrated that dopamine release was significantly diminished in the Str region of DRG2 KO mice and that treatment of DRG2 KO mice with l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA), a dopamine precursor, rescued the behavioral motor deficiency in DRG2 KO mice as observed with the rotarod test. This is the first report to identify DRG2 as a key regulator of dopamine release from dopamine neurons in the mouse brain.</P>

Applying Fire Risk Analysis to Develop Fire-safe Modular Walls: Guidance to Material Selection, Design Approach and Construction Method

        Seokho Lim,Joonsoo Chung,Mihyun Esther Kim 대한건축학회 2022 Architectural research Vol.24 No.2

For the past decade, South Korea had experienced catastrophic building fires, which resulted in consider-ably high number of casualties. This motivated research to develop fire-safe wall assemblies. In this study Fire Risk Analysis (FRA) is conducted as part of the project designing phase to ensure fire safety of the final product. Traditional approach was to consider fire performance at the end of the designing stage, when PASS/FAIL fire test results are required to be submitted to the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). By applying a fire risk analysis to guide the designing phase, overall fire safety of a wall assembly can be achieved more systematically as conducting FRA allows designers to clearly identify elements that are more vulnerable to fire and simply replace them with other practical options. Severity of fire risk is determined by considering the fire hazards of a wall assembly such as the exterior layer, insulation, vertical connectivity, and external ignition sources (e.g., photovoltaic panels). Frequency of fire risk is assessed based on the factors affecting fire likelihood, which are air cavity and fire-stopping applied in the design, and random design changes occurring during on-site construction. Fire risk matrix is proposed based on these fire risk factors and efforts to reduce the fire risk level associated with the wall assembly are given by systematically assessing the fire risk factors identified from fire risk analysis. Current study demonstrates how fire risk analysis can be applied to develop fire-safe walls by reducing the relevant fire risks– both severity and frequency.

Chemical states of surface oxygen during CO oxidation on Pt(1 1 0) surface revealed by ambient pressure XPS

        Yu, Youngseok,Koh, Yoobin Esther,Lim, Hojoon,Jeong, Beomgyun,Isegawa, Kazuhisa,Kim, Daehyun,Ueda, Kohei,Kondoh, Hiroshi,Mase, Kazuhiko,Crumlin, Ethan J,Ross Jr, Philip N,Gallet, Jean-Jacques,Bournel, Institute of Physics 2017 Journal of Physics, Condensed Matter Vol.29 No.46

<P>The study of CO oxidation on Pt(1 1 0) surface is revisited using ambient pressure x-ray photoemission spectroscopy. When the surface temperature reaches the activation temperature for CO oxidation under elevated pressure conditions, both the <I>α</I>-phase of PtO2 oxide and chemisorbed oxygen are formed simultaneously on the surface. Due to the exothermic nature of CO oxidation, the temperature of the Pt surface increases as CO oxidation takes place. As the CO/O2 ratio increases, the production of CO2 increases continuously and the surface temperature also increases. Interestingly, within the diffusion limited regions, the amount of surface oxide changes little while the chemisorbed oxygen is reduced.</P>

      • VIRTUAL INFLUENCERS ARE MORE AUTHENTIC THAN HUMAN INFLUENCERS? THE EFFECT OF INFLUENCER TYPES AND MUTIPLE ENDORSEMENTS ON CONSUMER RESPONSE TO INFLUENCER MARKETING

Eun Yeon Kang,Rachel Esther Lim,Yoon Hi Sung 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2023 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2023 No.07

Considering the popularity of virtual influencer (VI) marketing while its effectiveness remains fully unexplored, there is a need of academic attention testing consumer responses to VIs in comparison with human influencer marketing. Hence, this study aims to fill this gap by comparing consumers’ perceptions of a human versus virtual influencer’s endorsement. Specifically, based on the construal level theory and psychological reactance, this study investigates how consumers differently evaluate human and virtual influencers’ endorsement motives, which may further influence their attitudes toward a brand, advertising (i.e., endorsement), and an influencer and purchase intentions. Additionally, the moderating role of the number of endorsements (single vs. multiple) and perceived innovativeness are examined.

      • A multi-country study of the economic burden of dengue fever based on patient-specific field surveys in Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Cambodia

        Lee, Jung-Seok,Mogasale, Vittal,Lim, Jacqueline K.,Ly, Sowath,Lee, Kang Sung,Sorn, Sopheak,Andia, Esther,Carabali, Mabel,Namkung, Suk,Lim, Sl-Ki,Ridde, Valé,ry,Njenga, Sammy M.,Yaro, Seydou,Yoon Public Library of Science 2019 PLoS neglected tropical diseases Vol.13 No.2

<▼1><P><B>Background</B></P><P>Dengue fever is a rapidly growing public health problem in many parts of the tropics and sub-tropics in the world. While there are existing studies on the economic burden of dengue fever in some of dengue-endemic countries, cost components are often not standardized, making cross-country comparisons challenging. Furthermore, no such studies have been available in Africa.</P><P><B>Methods/Principal findings</B></P><P>A patient-specific survey questionnaire was developed and applied in Burkina Faso, Kenya, and Cambodia in a standardized format. Multiple interviews were carried out in order to capture the entire cost incurred during the period of dengue illness. Both private (patient’s out-of-pocket) and public (non-private) expenditure were accessed to understand how the economic burden of dengue is distributed between private and non-private payers.</P><P>A substantial number of dengue-confirmed patients were identified in all three countries: 414 in Burkina Faso, 149 in Kenya, and 254 in Cambodia. The average cost of illness for dengue fever was $26 (95% CI $23-$29) and $134 (95% CI $119-$152) per inpatient in Burkina Faso and Cambodia, respectively. In the case of outpatients, the average economic burden per episode was $13 (95% CI $23-$29) in Burkina Faso and $23 (95% CI $19-$28) in Kenya. Compared to Cambodia, public contributions were trivial in Burkina Faso and Kenya, reflecting that a majority of medical costs had to be directly borne by patients in the two countries.</P><P><B>Conclusions/Significance</B></P><P>The cost of illness for dengue fever is significant in the three countries. In particular, the current study sheds light on the potential economic burden of the disease in Burkina Faso and Kenya where existing evidence is sparse in the context of dengue fever, and underscores the need to achieve Universal Health Coverage. Given the availability of the current (CYD-TDV) and second-generation dengue vaccines in the near future, our study outcomes can be used to guide decision makers in setting health policy priorities.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Author summary</B></P><P>Dengue fever is a major public health concern in many parts of South-East Asia and South America. In addition to countries where dengue has been highly prevalent for many years, there is a growing concern on the undocumented burden of dengue in Africa. Following the successful execution of the first-round economic burden study in Vietnam, Thailand, and Colombia by the Dengue Vaccine Initiative, the second-round economic burden study was implemented in Burkina Faso, Kenya and Cambodia using the same standardized methodology. In particular, the second-round study targeted GAVI eligible countries for future vaccine introductions and included two African countries where the burden of dengue was relatively unknown. Our study outcomes show that the economic burden of dengue fever is significant in all three countries. The dengue vaccination era began in 2016 with the first dengue vaccine (CYD-TDV) although its public use should be carefully determined due to the safety concerns related to the vaccine. Considering that there are other second-generation dengue vaccines in development, the current study outcomes provide an important step to estimate the economic benefits of vaccination in the three countries.</P></▼2>

IDENTIFYING SUPPORT NEEDS OF ELDERLY CAREGIVERS OF CLIENTS WITH INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES IN SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT SERVICES IN SINGAPORE

        Melissa Teo,Tan Jui Horng,Zetty Akhtar bte Md Eizak,Esther Lim,Eunice Ho,Jamila Binti Mustaffa 대구대학교 한국특수교육문제연구소 2017 Asia-Pacific Journal of Intellectual Disabilities Vol.4 No.2

The expanding population of elderly parents who continue to care for their child with intellectual disabilities well into old age is a growing concern (Hubert & Hollins, 2000). The research aims to assess the needs of elderly parents as caregivers and the perceived needs of their child with intellectual disabilities. Semi structured interviews were undertaken with 10 caregivers aged 65 years and above. The interviews focused on identifying elderly caregivers’ needs and the perceived needs of their child. Care plans were developed, in which caregivers’ and clients’ needs were prioritized. Elderly caregivers expressed support needs in several areas; social interaction and emotional support were common themes. When discussing their child’s care plan, the need for their child to acquire Activities of Daily Living Skills and functional academics were some pertinent concerns. Other significant needs in their child’s care plan include transitional planning, residential support and early intervention of medical issues. Identifying the support needs of elderly caregivers, and developing appropriate care plans are important to provide the necessary support as they age. Emphasis was also given in training clients to be independent, with the goal that they can be a support to their elderly parents.
