      • Single-channel stereoscopic video imaging modality based on transparent rotating deflector.

        <P>In this study, we developed a single-channel stereoscopic video imaging modality based on a transparent rotating deflector (TRD). Sequential two-dimensional (2D) left and right images were obtained through the TRD synchronized with a camera, and the components of the imaging modality were controlled by a microcontroller unit. The imaging modality was characterized by evaluating the stereoscopic video image generation, rotation of the TRD, heat generation by the stepping motor, and image quality and its stability in terms of the structural similarity index. The degree of depth perception was estimated and subjective analysis was performed to evaluate the depth perception improvement. The results show that the single-channel stereoscopic video imaging modality may: 1) overcome some limitations of conventional stereoscopic video imaging modalities; 2) be a potential economical compact stereoscopic imaging modality if the system components can be miniaturized; 3) be easily integrated into current 2D optical imaging modalities to produce a stereoscopic image; and 4) be applied to various medical and industrial fields.</P>

      • Reliability sensitivity analysis of dropped object on submarine pipelines

        One of the safest and the most economical methods to transfer oil and gas is pipeline system. Prediction and prevention of pipeline failures during its assessed lifecycle has considerable importance. The dropped object is one of the accidental scenarios in the failure of the submarine pipelines. In this paper, using Monte Carlo Sampling, the probability of damage to a submarine pipeline due to a box-shaped dropped object has been calculated in terms of dropped object impact frequency and energy transfer according to the DNV-RP-F107. Finally, Reliability sensitivity analysis considering random variables is carried out to determine the effect intensity of each parameter on damage probability. It is concluded that impact area and drag coefficient have the highest sensitivity and mass and add mass coefficient have the lowest sensitivity on probability of failure.

        Effect of plant density ratios and weed control on the performance of maize-bean intercropping

        A 2-year study (2010-2011) was carried out in order to evaluate the effects of bean and maize intercropping. The experiment tested five different cropping systems: sole cropping of each crop, as well as intercropping of maize/bean with the ratios of 1:3 ($M_1B_3$), 2:2 ($M_2B_2$) and 3:1 ($M_3B_1$), each of which took place in the presence of two weed management systems (no weed control and weed eradication through manual removal), in a factorial experiment based on randomized complete block design using three replicates. Tests of homogeneity of variance for combined data over two years showed that data of both years could be analyzed together. The results showed that the effect of intercropping treatments on all measured traits in maize and bean were significantly different. A minimum land equivalent ratio (LER) for maize (0.78) was obtained for $M_3B_1$ under conditions of no weed control, while the highest LER (1.03) was observed in $M_3B_1$ under weed-free conditions. The highest (0.99) and lowest (0.70) LER values for beans were recorded for $M_1B_3$ under weed-free conditions and $M_3B_1$ under conditions of no weed control, respectively. $M_1B_3$ under weed-free conditions showed the highest total LER (2.02), while $M_3B_1$ under conditions of no weed control showed the lowest (1.48). Results of this study indicated that intercropping bean and maize can be an effective method to increase total productivity, and that the $M_1B_3$ system was the best cropping system for high productivity.

        Embryoid Body Size-Mediated Differential Endodermal and Mesodermal Differentiation Using Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Microwell Array

        Embryoid bodies have a number of similarities with cells in gastrulation, which provides useful biologicalinformation about embryonic stem cell differentiation. Extensive research has been done to study the control ofembryoid body-mediated embryonic stem cell differentiation in various research fields. Recently, microengineeringtechnology has been used to control the size of embryoid bodies and to direct lineage specific differentiation ofembryonic stem cells. However, the underlying biology of developmental events in the embryoid bodies of differentsizes has not been well elucidated. In this study, embryoid bodies with different sizes were generated within microfabricatedPEG microwell arrays, and a series of gene and molecular expressions related to early developmentalevents was investigated to further elucidate the size-mediated differentiation. The gene and molecular expressionprofile suggested preferential visceral endoderm formation in 450 μm embryoid bodies and preferential lateral platemesoderm formation in 150 μm embryoid bodies. These aggregates resulted in higher cardiac differentiation in 450 μmembryoid bodies and higher endothelial differentiation in 150 μm embryoid bodies, respectively. Our findings mayprovide further insight for understanding embryoid body size-mediated developmental progress.
