Ridge-following control for agricultural tractors using deep learning and stereo camera

The furrow irrigation, which forms a ridge-furrow and grows several crops on the ridge, involves the seeding work using the tractor that follows the path of the ridge. This work requires long hours labor from human, and there is a possibility that the work efficiency may decrease. In this paper, we propose deep learning and stereo image-based algorithms for sowing tasks on ridges via autonomous path-following of the tractor. The collected stereo image is converted into a depth image through a matching algorithm, and the depth image is input to a MobileNetV2-based deep learning network model to obtain a center line of the ridge. In addition, the target value of steering angle control is calculated by waypoint preview control concept. so that the tractor can follow the estimated center line of the ridge. The proposed algorithm is verified by GPS-based path information of autonomous driving and comparing it with human-operated driving path.

Explosively growing service of digital multimedia data increases the need for highly scalable low-cost storage. This paper proposes the new storage architecture based on torus network which does not need network switch and erasure coding for efficient storage usage for high scalability and efficient disk utilization. The proposed model has to compensate for the disadvantage of long network latency and network processing overhead of torus network. The proposed storage model was compared to two most popular distributed file system, GlusterFS and Ceph distributed file systems through a prototype implementation. The performance of prototype system shows outstanding results than erasure coding policy of two file systems and mostly even better results than replication policy of them.

This study was conducted to evaluate effects of dietary multi-carbohydrases (MCS) in a lactating sow diet on productive performance and immune responses of sows and their piglets. A total of 12 sows (218.37 ± 5.5 kg BW; 2 parity) were randomly assigned to 2 dietary treatments: a diet based on corn-soybean meal (CON) and CON with 0.01% MCS. The MCS contained xylanase (2,700 units/g), β-glucanase (700 units/g), and cellulase (800 units/g). Sows were fed the dietary treatments for 28 days (weaning) after farrowing. Blood samples were collected from sows on d 0, 3, and 7 after farrowing and randomly selected 2 nursing piglets in each sow on d 3, 7, and 14 after birth. Measurements were productive performance of sows, frequency of diarrhea of piglets, and immune responses of sows and their piglets. Sows fed MCS had lower (p < 0.05) their body weight change than those fed CON. Piglets from sows fed MCS had higher (p < 0.05) average weight gain and body weight at weaning day and lower (p < 0.10) frequency of diarrhea than those from sows fed CON. Sows fed MCS had lower number of white blood cells (WBC) on d 3 (p < 0.05) and TGF-β1 on d 7 (p < 0.10) during lactation than those fed CON. Similarly, piglets from sows fed MCS had also lower (p < 0.05) number of WBC on d 3 and d 7 and TGF-β1 and C-reactive protein on d 7 during lactation than those from sows fed CON. In addition, piglets from sows fed MCS had higher (p < 0.10) immunoglobulin G and M on d 7 during lactation those from sows fed CON. In conclusion, addition of dietary MCS in the lactating sow diet based on corn and soybean meal improved productive performance of sows and their litters and modulated their immune responses.

National Institute of Meteorological Sciences has conducted a total 54 cloud seeding experiments with a silver iodide and calcium chloride using aircrafts from 2008 to 2018. The goal of the experiments is to improve the techniques of precipitation enhancement in Korea. The cloud seeding experiments using the silver iodide and calcium chloride were 36 and 18 times, respectively. During the cloud seeding experiments of the silver iodide and calcium chloride, the average values of total cloud amount for two kinds of seeding materials were 9.6 for and 8.1, respectively. The cloud type with the highest occurrence was Nimbostratus (Ns)-Stratus (St) (58%) in the silver iodide cloud seeding experiment. It was Altostratus (As)-Stratocumulus (Sc) (44%) in the calcium chloride cloud seeding experiment. Compared to probability of obtaining cloud seeding effect of the experiments using a leased aircraft, the probability using an atmospheric research aircraft increased from 43% to 63% in the silver iodide cloud seeding experiment and from 29% to 75% in the calcium chloride cloud seeding experiment. However, the increasing tendency was only shown during the one year experiment (2018). To get the meaningful statistical tendency of the cloud seeding effects, it is needed to implement many experiments in several years. Further we have to more clearly understand the characteristics of clouds developing in Korea and implement the cloud seeding experiments under a variety of weather conditions in order to develop the optimized precipitation enhancement technology in Korea.
