        밴드를 이용한 연하곤란의 보상기법

        A 63-year-old man visited outpatient clinic complaining of dysphagia due to left jugular foramen meningioma. The patient underwent conventional dysphagia rehabilitation programs but functional improvement was not enough. A videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) revealed decreased laryngeal elevation and a lot of residue in pyriform sinus and vallecula. We noticed that enhancing laryngeal elevation like mendelshon maneuver promotes functional compensation, so we developed a therapeutic band for promoting laryngeal elevation. In follow-up VFSS, swallowing function was improved on the band. Persistent dysphagia due to decreased laryngeal elevation is very common and this case showed the possibility of improvement of symptom using therapeutic band we devleoped with conventional dysphagia rehabilitation programs.

      • Fabrication and characterization of the magnetic ferrite nanofibers by electrospinning process

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Since the magnetic properties of materials are greatly affected by their microstructure, nanostructuring of magnetic materials is attempted in various directions. Various processes have been used to synthesis one dimensional nanomaterials: template, hydrothermal, anodizing, and electrospinning. Among these processes, nanofibers fabricated by the electrospinning method are excellent for reproducibility and have a large aspect ratio. In addition, there have been many attempts to fabricate ceramic nanofibers with a more intricate shape using a sol-gel reaction. In this study, the electrospinning conditions for synthesizing ferrite (α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>) nanofiber were optimized by the preliminary results of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber. As-spun composite nanofibers of PVA/Fe(NO<SUB>3</SUB>)<SUB>3</SUB>·9H<SUB>2</SUB>O were transformed to an α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> phase by heat treatment at 550 °C. After heat treatment, the diameters ranged from 105 nm to 124 nm in as-spun composite nanofibers, and with a decrease in PVA content after heat treatment, the diameters ranged from 59 nm to 96 nm. We investigated the magnetization properties with the microstructure of α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofiber by a vibrating sample magnetometer. The saturation magnetization increased with an increasing diameter of the α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofiber, and highest value of 26.2 A·m<SUP>2</SUP>/kg was measured in the α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers with the largest diameter with a PVA content of 0.12 g/ml. The microstructure and magnetic properties of the α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers were controlled by an electrospinning process, and we were able to optimize the α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers for various application fields, such as electromagnetic interference and electromagnetic pulse absorbers.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Electrospinning process to control the microstructure of nanofibers </LI> <LI> Synthesis of α-Fe2O3 nanofibers using ferric nitrate and heat treatment. </LI> <LI> Magnetization behavior of α-Fe2O3 nanofibers with change of average diameter. </LI> <LI> Increased diameter of α-Fe<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> nanofibers resulted in higher saturation magnetization. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Crystal structure and its proposed nucleolytic site of the single domain catalytic antibody 3D8-VH

        Catalytic antibodies are monoclonal antibodies with catalytic activities. An anti-DNA antibody can bind DNA and hydrolyze it with modest catalytic activity. The monoclonal antibody 3D8 from the autoimmune-disease prone MRL-lpr/lpr mouse has been used to make a recombinant single-chain variable-fragment antibody (3D8 scFv) that hydrolyzes DNA. The catalytic site is composed of several hyper-variable loops. Two His residues from the variable domains of the heavy chain (VH) and the light chain (VL) are responsible for DNA hydrolysis. Interestingly, two single domain antibodies derived from 3D8 scFv, called 3D8-VH and 3D8-VL, also bind and hydrolyze DNA although their activities are significantly lower than those of 3D8 scFv. Here, we report the crystal structure of 3D8-VH, which revealed no significant difference compared to the VH domain from 3D8 scFv. The 3D8-VH antibody is also structurally very similar to 3D8-VL that has a catalytic metal ion on the newly exposed surface-curvature. The observed structural features of 3D8-VH, along with the fact that it retained catalytic activity when the His residue that was catalytic in the 3D8 scFv was replaced, suggest that 3D8-VH also has its DNA binding and cleavage activity on the newly exposed surface. These findings provide new insights into substrate recognition and catalysis by single domain anti-DNA antibodies.

        원예프로그램이 정신지체인의 적응기술에 미치는 효과에 관한 연구

        본 연구는 직업재활시설을 이용하는 성인정신지체인을 대상으로 원예프로그램을 적용해봄으로써 적응기술의 효과를 알아보는 것이다. 이 연구를 위해 실험집단과 통제집단을 각 6명씩 선정하여 2006년 2월부터 5월까지 매주 1회 프로그램을 진행, 적응행동검사를 사전 사후로 실시하였다. 자료분석은 실험집단과 통제집단의 동질성 검증은 Mann-Whitney U test를 실시하였고, 효과성 검증은 Wilcoxon 검정방법을 사용하였으며, 통계기법을 통해 규명되지 않은 효과는 매 프로그램마다 활동일지를 관찰 기록하였다. 이에 따른 주요 연구결과는 다음과 같다: 첫째, 실험집단의 성인정신지체인들은 원예프로그램 실시전과 비교하여 실시후에 적응기술 10가지영역 중 신체발달과 언어발달을 제외한 8가지영역(독립기능, 경제활동, 수와시간, 가사활동, 직업준비/직업활동, 자기관리, 책임, 사회성)에서 통계적으로 유의미하게 향상되었다; 둘째, 개별사례를 분석한 결과 실험집단의 적응기술이 긍정적으로 향상되었다;셋째, 원예프로그램 실시 후 실험집단 성인정신지체인들은 다른 프로그램 참여 속에서 자신의 역할과 관심과 표현이 증가되었으며, 자발적이고 적극적인 태도로 변화되었다. 이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 할 때, 원예프로그램이 성인정신지체인들의 적응기술 향상에 매우 효과적인 프로그램이며 임상 현장에서 유용하게 활용될 수 있음을 알 수 있다. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of adaptive skills by evaluating ‘Horticultural Program’ mentally retarded adults attended in a vocation rehabilitation organization. The study occurred from February and May 2006 on a weekly basis. To quantify the effects of the program on adaptive skills, experiment and control groups were evaluated in adaptive behavior using the statistical analyses: Mann-Whitney U test, and Wilcoxon test. Some effects that were not tested with statistical analyses were separately recorded. As compared to control groups, experiment groups had a higher value in Independent Function, Economic Activity, Numbers and Time, Domestic Activity, Prevocational/Vocational Activity, Self-direction, Responsibility, and Socialization. There were no significant differences between experiment groups and controls in Physical Development and Language Development. According to case studies, groups attended ‘Horticultural Program’ showed higher self-esteem and improved skills to express themselves in a proactive way. The experiment and case studies provided evidence that ‘Horticultural Program’ was valuable in improving the adaptive skills of mentally retarded adults. This program is also worthy of clinical applicatio.

      • Enhanced electrochemical performance of metal-supported solid oxide fuel cells via an inner coating of Gd<sub>0.1</sub>Ce<sub>0.9</sub>O<sub>2-δ</sub> nanosol in the porous NiFe-metal support

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The effects of applying an inner coating of nanosized gadolinium-doped ceria, Gd<SUB>0.1</SUB>Ce<SUB>0.9</SUB>O<SUB>2-δ</SUB>, sols on the porous NiFe-metal support for solid oxide fuel cell application are investigated. The GDC nanosols are synthesized by a sol-gel method using metal-alkoxide precursors and the Ni/Fe ratio of metal support is optimized. Field-emission transmission electron microscope reveals that the synthesized sols have particle size of 2–3 nm. Metal supports based on alloys composed of Ni and Fe are used in this work, and the ratio of Ni/Fe is optimised. In case of Ni/Fe ratio of 9:1, high porosity (≥ 57%) metal supports are obtained and the physico-chemical compatibility between the NiFe-metal supports and the Ni-GDC anodes is improved. The I-V results demonstrate a remarkable improvement in the power density of the GDC nanosol-coated button cell (677 mW cm<SUP>−2</SUP>) compared to that of the uncoated cell (437 mW cm<SUP>−2</SUP>) at 650 °C. The total area specific resistance after the coating GDC nanosols significantly decrease from 0.226 Ω cm<SUP>2</SUP> to 0.125 Ω cm<SUP>2</SUP>. These results reflect that GDC nanosols play an important role in reducing the resistances due to the effective expansion of the triple phase boundary and the improved connectivity of the ionically conductive phase.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A GDC nanosol is synthesised by a sol-gel process using metal-alkoxide precursors. </LI> <LI> Total ASR after the coating of GDC nanosols decreased from 0.226 to 0.125 Ωcm<SUP>2</SUP>. </LI> <LI> Nanosol coating improves the electrochemical performance of metal supported SOFCs. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Inhaled essential oil from <i>Chamaecyparis obtuse</i> ameliorates the impairments of cognitive function induced by injection of β-amyloid in rats

        <P><I>Context: Chamaecyparis obtusa</I> Sieb. & Zucc., Endlicher (Cupressaceae) forest bathing or aromatherapy has been shown in various studies to have biological functions such as anticancer, antiallergies, antiinflammatory, and antioxidant activity. However, no reports exist on the pharmacological or biological activities of the essential oil of <I>C. obtusa</I> (EOCO) or its effects on central nervous system.</P><P><I>Objective</I>: The aggregation and formation of β-amyloid peptides (Aβ) into fibrils are central events in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), and overproduction and aggregation of Aβ into oligomers have been known to trigger neurotoxicity. In this study, we investigated the effects of inhaled EOCO on cognitive function and neuronal apoptosis in rats intrahippocampally injected with Aβ.</P><P><I>Materials and methods</I>: To model AD, 4 μg of aggregated Aβ was injected into the hippocampus. To test the effects of EOCO, behavioral performance in the Morris water maze was tested 4 days after injection. After behavioral testing, brain sections were prepared for TTC staining and TUNEL assay.</P><P><I>Results</I>: Inhaled EOCO protected spatial learning and memory from the impairments induced by Aβ<SUB>1-40</SUB> injection. In addition, the behavioral deficits accompanying Aβ<SUB>1-40</SUB>-induced AD were attenuated by inhalation of EOCO. Furthermore, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and neuronal apoptosis were significantly inhibited in rats treated with Aβ<SUB>1-40</SUB> and EOCO compared to rats treated only with Aβ<SUB>1-40</SUB>.</P><P><I>Discussion and conclusion</I>: EOCO suppressed both AD-related neuronal cell apoptosis and AD-related dysfunction of the memory system. Thus, the results of this study support EOCO as a candidate drug for the treatment of AD.</P>

      • 약용식물 추출물의 Tyrosinase 억제 활성

        (1) Objectives: To discover natural skin-lightening agents, we have evaluated the inhibitory activity of EtOH extracts from 20 medicinal plants against mushroom tyrosinase. (2) Methods: Tyrosinase activity was determined by the dopachrome method using L-tyrosine as the substrates. (3) Results: Of the plant extracts tested, the extracts of 4 plants, Albizzia julibrissin, Curcuma longa, Anethum graveolens and Sophora flavescens, exhibited potent inhibitory activity (> 50%) in mushroom tyrosinase assay. Four plant extract, extracts of Agrimonia pilosa, Paeonia moutan, Magnolia obovata and Eugenia caryophyllata also showed relatively strong inhibitory (> 40%) against mushroom tyrosinase. (4) Conclusion: These active medicinal plants may be useful for the development of skin-whitening agents. Since the active medicinal plants may contain effective tyrosinase inhibitors even more than kojic acid, further study to identify the active constituents from the plants is expected.
