Minimum Wages and Firm Exports: Evidence from Vietnamese Manufacturing Firms

This paper investigates the relationship between the minimum wage and firm's export behavior by using firm-level data of Vietnamese manufacturing enterprises over the period 2010 through 2015. In this regard, I apply the logistic regression model for the probability of exporting and the differences-in-differences analysis to the data, and find that raising minimum wage standards drive no new exporters but a rise in a firm's export sales. Less productive and more labor-intensive firms raise their amount of exports in response to increasing minimum wage levels. Being exposed to increasing minimum wage levels makes a firm under-perform in terms of export sales compared to non-exposed firms.
Minimum Wages and Firm Productivity: Evidence from Vietnamese Manufacturing Firms

This paper empirically examines the minimum-wage impact on firm productivity. Using a detailed Vietnamese firm-level dataset from 2010 through 2015, the regression results suggest that firms raise their labor productivity, total factor productivity, capital intensity and revenue in response to increased minimum wage standards. Firms that pay their workers below the minimum wage react more positively in raising their labor productivity than high-wage firms. Minimum wages has had a more pronounced impact on firms’ labor productivity, total factor productivity and capital intensity since the uniform wage rate was introduced for both domestic private and foreign-invested enterprises in 2012.

Penicillium is a rich source of bioactive compounds. Among all Penicillium species, Penicillium oxalicumhas been reported to produce various types of secondarymetabolites, including alkaloids, phenolics, and tetrahydroxanthonedimeric compounds, exhibiting many pharmacologicaleff ects, such as antiviral, antibacterial, and cytotoxicactivities. Three secondary metabolites were isolated from afermented culture of the sponge-associated fungal strain P. oxalicum CLC-MF05: oxaline ( 1 ), isorhodoptilometrin ( 2 ),and 5-hydroxy-7-(2′-hydroxypropyl)-2-methyl-chromone( 3 ). Their chemical structures were identifi ed by 1D and2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectroscopic analysesand compared with previously reported data. All three compoundsinhibited NO and PGE 2 overproduction and iNOSand COX-2 overexpression in both LPS-stimulated BV2and rat primary microglia. These metabolites also repressed mRNA expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-12. Further,mechanistic studies revealed that the inhibitory actionsof compounds 1–3 were regulated by the inactivation of theNF-κB and MAPK signaling pathways. Furthermore, inactivationof the TLR4/MyD88 pathway contributed to theanti-neuroinfl ammatory activity of these compounds. Theseresults suggest that compounds 1–3 represent potential antiinflammatory candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerativediseases; however, further investigation is needed.

Terminators and introns are vital regulators of gene expression in many eukaryotes; however, the functional importance of these elements for controlling gene expression in Agaricomycetes remains unclear. In this study, the effects of Ceriporiopsis subvermispora terminators and introns on the expression of a recombinant hygromycin B phosphotransferase gene (hph) were characterized. Using a transient transformation system, we proved that a highly active terminator (e.g., the gpd terminator) is required for the efficient expression of the hph gene. Mutational analyses of the C. subvermispora gpd terminator revealed that hph expression was dictated by an A-rich region, which included a putative positioning element, and polyadenylation sites. In contrast, our results indicated that introns are not required for the expression of hph directed by the Csβ1-tub and Csgpd promoters in C. subvermispora. This study provides insights into the functions and cis-element requirements of transcriptional terminators in Agaricomycetes, which may be relevant for designing recombinant genes for this important fungal class.

The Mekong River Delta is a hotspot of aquaculture and fish biodiversity. In this study, fish community structure, migration, threatened status and economic value were investigated in the Co Chien River (COR) from August 2017 to July 2019. A total of 3640 fish specimens were collected from 11 sampling stations in the COR. These belong to 133 species of 107 genera of 58 families of 17 orders. The Perch-like order (Perciformes) is the most diverse group, with 65 species accounting for 48.87% of total species collected. The catfish order (Siluriformes) is the second-most diverse group with 15 species (11.28%) and the carps (Cypriniformes) with 14 species (10.53%) is the third. The remaining major groups in the order of diversity are the Herring (Clupeiformes) consisting of 9 species (6.77%) and the Flounder (Pleuronectiformes) consisting of 7 species (5.26%). The remaining orders have number of species varying from 1 to 3 (0.75–2.26%). Among the 133 species recorded, 6 species were considered as Vulnerable category based on the Vietnam Red Data Book (2007). According to the IUCN Red list (2021), 1 species (Coilia mystus) is Endangered (0.75%), 2 species (Maculabatis gerrardi and Pangasius krempfi) are Vulnerable (1.50%), 4 species are Near Threatened (3.01%), 6 species are Data deficient (4.51%), and 76 species are considered as Least concern (57.14%). The results shown that 79 species were migratory fishes (20 species migrated from the upstream and 59 species migrated from the sea), 41 species are endemic species for the MR (30.83% of the total species collected and 23.70% of total endemic species of the MR) and 36 fish species are considered as of local economic value (27.07%). The diversity of fish species was found to be more diverse in the dry season than the wet season, which indicates the influence of river water salinity changes on fish diversity in the region.

We report the parameter values of the model dielectric function (ε = ε1 + iε2 ) of SnS0.52Se0.48 in the spectral range from 0.74 to 6.42 eV and the temperature range from 27 to 350 K. An analytic representation, obtained using the Tauc–Lorentz (TL) dispersion model, allows interpolation of the parameters with respect to both energy and temperature. We used reported experimental spectra as the basis of our approach and verified that the TL model can parameterize the model dielectric function so as to reproduce the experimental data well and yield values of the dielectric function and the refractive index at arbitrary temperatures that are useful for device applications.
Optical Properties of Anisotropic SnSxSe1−x for Arbitrary Compositions

Here, we report parameter values for the model dielectric function (ε = ε1 + iε2) of the SnSxSe1-x alloy in the spectral range from 0.74 to 6.4 eV and the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 by using the Tauc-Lorentz (TL) model. The experimentally reported dielectric function data for SnSxSe1-x along the zigzag (a) and the armchair (b) directions were borrowed from a previous study for selected compositions. We successfully reproduced the asymmetric nature of the dielectric function with TL lineshapes. The ε data are parameterized by using six and seven TL components for the zigzag and the armchair directions, respectively. The obtained parameters at several compositions were fit with cubic polynomials, which can be used to determine the dielectric function and the refractive index as continuous functions of the energy and the composition. Our results will be useful for optoelectronic device design based on SnSxSe1-x materials.
Azimuthal angle dependent dielectric function of SnS by ellipsometry

Since α-SnS has optically strong anisotropic characteristics, a simple method to determine its crystal orientation is strongly needed in device engineering. In this report, by measuring dielectric function ε = ε1 + iε2 of α-SnS in the 1–5 eV spectral region with the full azimuthal angle range, we could find a simple relationship between measured dielectric function values and the orientation of the α-SnS crystal axis. Therefore, during the device manufacturing process, one can use spectroscopic ellipsometry to quickly measure the dielectric response of the α-SnS region of the device to correctly orient the SnS along the preferred direction for the best performance of the device. We also performed the azimuthal angle-dependent analysis of the critical points (CP) analysis, which shows that the positions of CP energies are basically invariant, while their amplitudes and lineshapes strongly depend on the azimuthal angle.

<P>One new monoterpenoid glycoside, myresculoside (<B>1</B>), and eleven known compounds, were isolated from methanol extract of <I>Myrica esculenta</I> leaves by repeated column chromatography. The effects of these compounds on angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibition were investigated. Compounds <B>3</B> and <B>4</B> showed the most potent ACE inhibition with rates of 29.97% and 25.63% at concentration of 100 μ<SMALL>M</SMALL>, respectively. Compounds <B>5</B>, <B>6</B>, and <B>11</B> showed weak activity with inhibitory rates of 0.07—1.41% at concentration of 100 μ<SMALL>M</SMALL>.</P>

<P>Fourteen cucurbitane-type triterpene glycosides (1—14) were isolated from a methanol extract of <I>Momordica charantia</I> fruits, including three new compounds, charantosides A—C (1, 5, 6). Their structures were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic methods. All isolated compounds were evaluated for α-glucosidase inhibitory effect. Of which, 12 and 13 showed moderate inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. Whereas, 2, 3, 6—11, and 14 showed weak inhibitory activity, and 1, 4, and 5 were inactive.</P>
