<P>The Egyptian fruit-bat <I>Rousettus aegyptiacus</I> which had been raised at the private commercial aquarium in Seoul, Korea for indoor exhibition was found dead and submitted to College of Veterinary Medicine, Seoul National University for postmortem examination. A pure bacterium of <I>Kluyvera ascorbata</I> was isolated from the blood specimen. The isolation of <I>K. ascorbata</I> from fruit bat is very important, because it is the most infectious agent of the genus Kluyvera that cause serious diseases to animals and human. Fruit-bats which are distributed in pet shops through black-market in Korea although unproven become popular pet nowadays. This situation enhances chance of zoonosis. This paper describes the first isolation of <I>K. ascorbata</I> from the Egyptian fruit-bat.</P>
Isolation of Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae from zebra shark Stegostoma fasciatum

The zebra shark Stegostoma fasciatum which had been reared in the commercial aquaria was found dead and submitted for postmortem examination. A pure bacterial culture was isolated from pale and enlarged liver. The analysis of ureC and 16S rRNA genes confirmed the isolate as Photobacterium (P.) damselae subsp. damselae and this pathogen was sensitive to gentamicin. Although, no mortality in mouse was observed in the experimental infection study, the isolation of this pathogen in aquarium fish is significant because it can act as a reservoir to other aquatic animals and can also be zoonotic potential to human during aquarium management. This paper describes the first isolation of P. damselae subsp. damselae from zebra shark.
The Effect of Record Versus Rank Competition on the Performance of Male Marathoners

We examined the performance differences in elite male marathoners when competing for record times versus ranks. Data of the top 300 male marathoners in 2019 were obtained from the World Athletics website for comparison and analysis. All competitions approved by the World Athletics were rated in the order of OW, GL, A, B, C, D, E, and F. Time comparisons were performed using one-way ANOVA and then the Bonferroni post-hoc test. Higher-grade competitions consist of top athletes with competitive qualifying record whose central motivation is to achieve the best records. Lower-grade competitions are often preliminary measures of qualification for larger competitions, motivating athletes to compete for ranks rather than records. The average time difference for each competition was statistically significant. GL's average time was the fastest at 2:13:42 (±00:03:15). From A to F, the average finishing time tended to increase from 2:09:51 (±00:03:27) to 2:14:48 (±00:03:24). The average end time at F was the slowest at 2:14:48 (±00:03:24). When comparing the athletes’ relative performance, the times for large international competitions, such as GL, A, and B, were also faster than smaller competitions, such as E and F (p<0.05). These results are interpreted to mean that competing to achieve record times is better for marathon performance than competing for ranks.

<P>This paper describes 12 species of ctenostomes from the marine waters of the Korean Peninsula, including five new species-Alcyonidium bullitum n. sp., Alcyonidium pulposum n. sp., Alcyonidium busanensis n. sp., Immergentia cheongpodensis n. sp. and Penetrantia taeanata n. sp., the latter two constituting shell-borers that ramify within dead mollusk shells. Three previously described species are also newly added to the Korean fauna-Amathia acervata Lamouroux, 1824, Amathia medullaris Mawatari, 1972 and Walkeria prorepens Kubanin, 1992. The nomenclature of known species is updated and a revised checklist of all Korean Ctenostomata is included. New biological information is provided based on observation and microphotography of living and preserved colonies, SEM images of dry material and resin casts of ctenostome borings in mollusk shells. </P>
Mechanisms of whole-body electromyostimulation for human body

Recently, there have been some issues about physical appearance management among young people in Korea. Electromyostimulation (EMS) is known to send electric stimulation to muscle and to subcutaneous fat layers to help manage body fat. However, EMS has been divided into the opinions of authors regarding the fat reduction and muscle mass increase. Thus, this study was to investigate the effect of various-stimulation parameters of EMS on body composition tested by Computer Tomograph (CT) and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) and physical appearance measured by questionnaire in collegiate men. The fourteen young men subjects aged between 20 and 24 years were recruited from the Hanseo University in Korea. All habitually wore the suit of EMS with various stimulation parameters for a duration of 6 weeks after signing an informed consent form which was approved by the Research Ethics Committee for Human Use (SYUIRB2015-120). The participants were allocated to each of 4 groups according to randomized control study design as follows: low stimulation group (LSG, n=3), mid stimulation group (MSG, n=4), high stimulation group (HSG, n=4), and control group (CG, n=3), respectively. Non-parametric statistical methods were conducted on the collected data with a significance level set a priori at P<.05. The Kruskal-Wallis was used for the differences among the 4 groups and then Bonferroni post hoc test was used for significant differences in the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results are as followed. First, there were significant decreases in visceral and subcutaneous fat in CT scan of three EMS groups compared with control group. Second, there was significant improvement in physical appearance of MSG and HSG compared with LSG and CG after 6 weeks. Electrical stimulation was reported that it has many clinical effects such as body shape control by body fat reduction, increase of blood circulation, anti-pain and anti-inflammation of injured muscle, tendon and ligament, regeneration of cartilage, enhancement of muscle strength, and transferring material continent into the dermis. As the results of various researches, this study confirmed that EMS could improve the body composition and the psychological factors such as physical appearance in collegiate men.

Among the many sports and activities to choose from, martial arts are becoming increasingly popular for health and fitness. Due to the differ-ent nature of the various styles of martial arts, injuries are not uncom-mon. Though there have been studies on the injury rates of several martial art styles, there have been none regarding Choi Kwang Do (CKD), a noncompetitive martial art with relaxed and fluid movements designed to promote health and fitness for people of all ages. The pur-pose of this study was to examine the rate of injury for adults training in CKD to find out whether this is a safe style of martial art for adults. This study found the prevalence, causes, severity, and types of injuries from CKD practitioners around the world through an online survey targeting adults (n=122), aged 18 or older, with varying years of training experi-ence. The annual rate of injury was 11.73 for every 100 CKD practi-tioners. There was no correlation between the length of training experi-ence and injury. Training frequency and duration had no significant re-lationship with injury rates. A significant positive relationship between training intensity and injury existed (P=0.009). The results of the study found that CKD can be an attractive option for adults of any age who are looking to learn a martial art or choose a physical activity with a low risk of injury, however the training intensity should be kept at a level that is not excessively high.
