Comparison of the Functional Components in Netted and Cantaloupe Melons

This study assessed the utility of netted melon ‘Top Earl’s’ and cantaloupe melon ‘Alex’ as functional fruits by analysing their moisture content, vitreous sugar, folic acid, citric acid, and beta-carotene levels. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyse the free sugar, folic acid, citric acid, and beta-carotene levels. The moisture content was not significantly different between ‘Top Earl’s’ and ‘Alex.’ The glucose, sucrose, and fructose contents were three, two, and one-and-a-half fold higher in ‘Alex’ than in ‘Top Earl’s.’ Moreover, citric acid was approximately three times higher in ‘Alex’ than that in Top Earl’s.’ However, the folic acid content was higher in ‘Top ‘Earl’s’ than ‘Alex,’ and the amount was 124 μg / 100 g FW and 112 μg / 100 g FW respectively. ‘Beta-carotene was undetectable in ‘Top Earl’s,’ whereas it was 1000 μg / 100 g FW in ‘Alex.’ β-carotene, a substance that is converted in the body into vitamin A and acts as an antioxidant, is an important component in healthy food. These results suggested that the cantaloupe melon ‘Alex’ has a higher free sugar content and functional ingredients, such as antioxidants, including citric acid and beta carotene, than the netted melon ‘Top Earl’s.’

Interspecific hybridization has widely been used in the Hibiscus plant to create cultivars with unique bloom colors and shapes. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytogenetic and morphological comparison of H. paramutabilis and H. moscheutos ‘Luna Red’, and their F1 progenies. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) detection using 5S rDNA and 18S rDNA probes was conducted to know copy number and distributions of complementary rDNA loci in the chromosomes of parental and F1 progenies (182057-3; 182057-11). And flow cytometry was used to determined genome sizes, DNA contents. H. moscheutos has 38 chromosomes, H. paramutabilis has 82, and their F1 progenies have 60 chromosomes, according to chromosome counting. FISH findings showed two 5S rDNA (green) and six 18S rDNA (red) loci were detected in H. moscheutos, while three 5S rDNA and ten rDNA loci for H. paramutabilis. We detected three 5S rDNA and eight 18S rDNA in F1 progenies that were intermediate to their parents. 2C DNA contents were 4.18pg, and 2.06pg for H. paramutabilis and H. moscheutos respectively whereas, F1 progenies (182057-3; and 182057-11) had 3.11pg and 3.15pg accordingly. The leaf shape of ‘H. paramutabilis’ was cordate and ‘H. moscheutos’ was ovate. The leaf margin of ‘H. paramutabilis’ was palmatipartite, leaf length was 14.02 cm, and leaf width was 14.46 cm. The leaf margin of ‘H. moscheutos’ was entire, leaf length was 11.54 cm, and leaf width was 10.19 cm. While F1 progenies (182057-3; 182057-11) had almost the same leaf morphology. The leaf shape was cordate, the leaf length was 12.42 cm, leaf width was 13.42 cm. The diameter of the flowers was 11.81 cm, and 15.50 cm for H. paramutabilis and H. moscheutos respectively, while F1 progenies had 14.82 cm in diameter There was a significant trait in flowers color. Pollen receiver and donor had purple and red color respectively, while F1 progenies showed purple red color.
