<P><B>SUMMARY</B></P><P>In this paper, the geometric nonlinear behavior of wall‐frame tall building structures is analyzed. The governing equations of the wall‐frame systems with outrigger trusses are formulated through the continuum approach, and the whole structure is idealized as a shear‐flexural cantilever with rotational spring. The effect of shear and flexural deformation of the wall frame and outrigger trusses are considered and incorporated in the formulation of the governing equations. Geometric nonlinearity in the sense of von Karman is included in the formulation, and Newton–Raphson iterative method is employed to solve the nonlinear equations. A displacement‐based one‐dimensional nonlinear finite element model is developed. Numerical results for wall frame and mega‐column structures with outriggers are obtained and compared with the finite element package MIDAS. The proposed method is found to be simple and efficient, providing reasonably accurate results in early design stages of tall building structures. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.</P>

In the field of yarn dyeing, the method taken most generally is a type of package dyeing which uses a package of cheeses stacked on a spindle made of a perforated tube. For this kind of cheese dyers, leveling dyeing has been reported as the most vital problem to be solved due to the difficulty of dye penetration through cheeses, the color difference resulting from a pressure loss in the spindle and irregular dye supply into each spindle. The present study is focused on the development of new spindle design to ensure the uniform supply of dyeing liquid from the spindle to the cheese stack. The axisymmetric, incompressible, Navier-Stokes equations are solved for several spindle configurations, using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The results obtained show that the uniformity of dye supply can be enhanced by using either a cone type spindle with a uniform array of porous holes or a straight spindle with a non-uniform one.
A storage format for electronic comic services and its application

In this paper, we propose an integrated storage format for comic contents to provide the convenience of paper book with the advantage of the electronic form. The proposed e-comic storage format packages comic images with related information such as additional contents, bibliographic information, user information and related contents based on the ISO base media file format that facilitates interchange, management, editing, and presentation of comic contents. An e-comic viewer according to the proposed format is implemented and verified on the proposed application scenarios. With the proposed method, it is possible to give users richer consumption experiences.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is an active component of propolis from honeybee. We investigated potential molecular mechanisms underlying CAPE-mediated nuclear factor kappa beta (NFκB) inhibition and analyzed structure of CAPE for its biological effect. CAPE attenuated expression of NFκB dependent luciferase stimulated with TNF-α or LPS and suppressed LPS-mediated induction of iNOS, a target gene product of NFκB. In HCT116 cells, CAPE interfered with TNF-α dependent IκBα degradation and subsequent nuclear accumulation of p65, which occurred by direct inhibition of inhibitory protein kappaB kinase (IKK). CAPE increased the expression of Nrf2-dependent luciferase and <I>heme oxygenase-1</I>, a target gene of Nrf2, and elevated the nuclear level of Nrf2 protein, indicating that CAPE activated the Nrf2 pathway. In HCT116 cells with stable expression of Nrf2 shRNA, CAPE elicited a reduced inhibitory effect on TNF-α-activated NFкB compared to scramble RNA expressing control cells. On the other hand, the NFκB inhibitory effect of CAPE was diminished by removal or modification of the Michael reaction acceptor, catechol or phenethyl moiety in CAPE. These data suggest that CAPE inhibits TNF-α-dependent NFκB activation via direct inhibition of IKK as well as activation of Nrf2 pathway, in which the functional groups in CAPE may be involved.</P>

Throughout the GTA welding (GTAW) process, bead width (Bw), bead height (Bh), penetration depth (Dp), and metal transfer modes change in accordance with welding current and wire feeding speed. Various processes employing GTAW include text marking welding systems that have bead width and bead height as the main management items, and some such processes require sufficiently complete penetration. It is judged that there will also be a metal transfer type advantageous for welding the first layer of the pipe root gap. Accordingly, a bead shape prediction model in GTAW has been proposed according to changes in welding current and wire feeding speed, wherein the bead shape change and metal transfer change interval are presented for the heat input ratio (HIR) change.

<P>OBJECTIVES: Validation of blood pressure measurement devices is always difficult because the gold standard method depends on the observer's manual assessment. To improve the assessment algorithm in automatic blood pressure measurement devices, knowing the reference blood pressure values and analyzing various data are always necessary. A digital system to record Korotkoff sound and cuff pressure is suggested. METHODS: The recording system consists of cuff, microphone, amplifier, and all the components of an oscillometric measurement device, which enable the collection of various data from patients. After collecting the data, the browsing software can playback the recorded sound and pressure variation on a computer. RESULTS: The system records the Korotkoff sound faithfully. The sound can be played with sound card on a personal computer. Cuff pressure can also be displayed with Korotkoff sound at the same time. With this playback software, the observer can assess systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure . The observer can listen again and discuss with others when the decision is not clear. CONCLUSION: The digital recording system of sphygmomanometry can be used for validation of blood pressure measurement devices, collecting of oscillometric data for research, and educating the students who learn blood pressure measurement.</P>

The shipbuilding industry has applied automatic welding systems to increase productivity as well as address the shortage of skilled welder. However, a manual labor is still required in welding process where automatic systems cannot be applied. Since the past decade, the number of skilled welders in the shipbuilding industry has been continuously decreasing. Accordingly, various education equipment and systems have been developed for the manual welding process in order to increase education efficiency and reduction of training time . However, when educating trainees, the educational equipment and systems prioritize parameters such as current, voltage, gas flow, and wire speed. In contrast, ergonomic parameters such as hand tremor and posture are neglected as minor factors . Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the skilled welders and trainees and compared them to increase education efficiency. To conduct this study, we utilized analysis methods based on data envelopment (DEA) and statistics . DEA can evaluate the relative efficiency between decision making units (DMUs) and derive improvement way based on the efficiency ratios. The proposed method can derive the improvement way of each trainee among ergonomic parameters based on the experimental outcome from the DEA.
