        Hepatic and splenic sonographic and sonoelastographic findings in pulmonary arterial hypertension

        Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the associations of sonographic and sonoelastographic parameters with clinical cardiac parameters, as well as to assess their value in predicting survival in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Methods: Thirty-six patients with PAH and normal liver function were prospectively enrolled in this prospective study along with 26 healthy controls, all of whom underwent ultrasound and point shear wave elastography examinations. Additionally, the portal vein pulsatility index (PVPI), inferior vena cava collapsibility index, and clinical cardiac variables were obtained in PAH patients. The values of hepatic (LVs) and splenic shear wave velocity (SVs) were compared between PAH patients and controls. The relationships between all sonographic and clinical parameters in the PAH patients were analyzed. Furthermore, their prognostic value in predicting survival was investigated. Results: LVs values in PAH patients (median, 1.62 m/s) were significantly higher than in controls (median, 0.99 m/s), while no significant difference was observed in SVs values. Patients with higher grades of tricuspid regurgitation (TR) had significantly different values of PVPI (P=0.010) and sonoelastographic parameters (P<0.001 for LVs and P=0.004 for SVs) compared to those with less severe TR. Tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion values were the only investigated parameter found to be associated with survival (hazard ratio, 0.814; 95% confidence interval, 0.694 to 0.954; P=0.011). Conclusion: Our results demonstrated a direct association between cardiac congestion (i.e., the severity of TR) and liver stiffness, which should be kept in mind during the assessment of fibrosis in patients with PAH.

        Cloud computing is becoming more and more important in research organization and IT industry. It has various advantages like scalability and availability of computing resources. Virtual cluster systems are also used in scientific computing environment. The system like vcluster, integrates computing resources from heterogeneous clouds. It maintains the information of all clouds which are involved in a federated environment. The virtual machine allocation is based on the available resources and information of utilized resources. In order to do that vcluster has to request the clouds to get the real time information of virtual machines which include huge synchronization overhead. In this paper, we propose a methodology to reduce overhead in synchronization mechanism. An analysis shows that the proposed mechanism minimizes the overhead of synchronization. It also has ability to discover, correct and report the errors.

        The Defense Industry corporation for the advancement in research and development on military hardware and warfare of army in Nigeria

        The armed forces generally signify national pride, strength, valor, resilience, and power as they perform the tasks of securing land and border and protecting the citizenry from external aggressors. The attributes required for this range from patriotism, tact, discipline, and selflessness in service to the nation. However, the task also requires modernized military hardware and equipment to secure national interest, promote the rule of law, and fight insecurity, insurgency, and banditry. In a bid to address security challenges and the shortfall in the supply of basic raw materials for the manufacture of military hardware and armaments, the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) has partnered with the Raw Materials Research and Development Council for the supply of basic raw materials to meet the growing needs of the military. A survey methodology has been employed in this study to assess the role of DICON in the promotion of defense research and development. The data collected were analyzed using a decision mean of 3.00. The findings reveal that the availability of principal raw materials such as square and angle bars as well as various forms of steel to DICON is insufficient for the fabrication and production of arms and ammunition and armored personal carriers. This paper recommends the need for a change of orientation through the revitalization of steel companies, which will provide an impetus to the economy, generate job opportunities, and contribute to the nation’s gross domestic product.

      • Oxidative Stress Induced Damage to Paternal Genome and Impact of Meditation and Yoga - Can it Reduce Incidence of Childhood Cancer?

        Background: Sperm DNA damage is underlying aetiology of poor implantation and pregnancy rates but also affects health of offspring and may also result in denovo mutations in germ line and post fertilization. This may result in complex diseases, polygenic disorders and childhood cancers. Childhood cancer like retinoblastoma (RB) is more prevalent in developing countries and the incidence of RB has increased more than three fold in India in the last decade. Recent studies have documented increased incidence of cancers in children born to fathers who consume alcohol in excess and tobacco or who were conceived by assisted conception. The aetiology of childhood cancer and increased disease burden in these children is lin ked to oxidative stress (OS) and oxidative DNA damage( ODD) in sperm of their fathers. Though several antioxidants are in use to combat oxidative stress, the effect of majority of these formulations on DNA is not known. Yoga and meditation cause significant decline in OS and ODD and aid in regulating OS levels such that reactive oxygen speues meditated signal transduction, gene expression and several other physiological functions are not disrupted. Thus, this study aimed to analyze sperm ODD as a possible etiological factor in childhood cancer and role of simple life style interventions like yoga and meditation in significantly decreasing seminal oxidative stress and oxidative DNA damage and thereby decreasing incidence of childhood cancers. Materials and Methods: A total of 131 fathers of children with RB (non-familial sporadic heritable) and 50 controls (fathers of healthy children) were recruited at a tertiary center in India. Sperm parameters as per WHO 2010 guidelines and reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA fragmentation index (DFI), 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxy guanosine (8-OHdG) and telomere length were estimated at day 0, and after 3 and 6 months of intervention. We also examined the compliance with yoga and meditation practice and smoking status at each follow-up. Results: The seminal mean ROS levels (p<0.05), sperm DFI (p<0.001), 8-OHdG (p<0.01) levels were significantly higher in fathers of children with RB, as compared to controls and the relative mean telomere length in the sperm was shorter. Levels of ROS were significantly reduced in tobacco users (p<0.05) as well as in alcoholics (p<0.05) after intervention. DFI reduced significantly (p<0.05) after 6 months of yoga and meditation practice in all groups. The levels of oxidative DNA damage marker 8-OHdG were reduced significantly after 3 months (p<0.05) and 6 months (p<0.05) of practice. Conclusions: Our results suggest that OS and ODD DNA may contribute to the development of childhood cancer. This may be due to accumulation of oxidized mutagenic base 8OHdG, and elevated MDA levels which results in MDA dimers which are also mutagenic, aberrant methylation pattern, altered gene expression which affect cell proliferation and survival through activation of transcription factors. Increased mt DNA mutations and aberrant repair of mt and nuclear DNA due to highly truncatred DNA repair mechanisms all contribute to sperm genome hypermutability and persistant oxidative DNA damage. Oxidative stress is also associated with genome wide hypomethylation, telomere shortening and mitochondrial dysfunction leading to genome hypermutability and instability. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report decline in OS and ODD and improvement in sperm DNA integrity following adoption of meditation and yoga based life style modification.This may reduce disease burden in next generation and reduce incidence of childhood cancers.

        Automated gear fault detection of micron level wear in bevel gears using variational mode decomposition

        Gearboxes have an important role in power transmission systems. For such systems, vibration-based fault diagnosis techniques are frequently used to prevent premature failure and to ensure smooth transmission. We automated the fault diagnosis of gears having level of wear fault at micron using variational mode decomposition (VMD). VMD has been applied iteratively with specific input parameters. VMD decomposes the gear vibration signal into different narrowband components (NBCs) or obtained components (OCs). Various statistical features, namely kurtosis, skewness, standard deviation, root mean square, and crest factor, were extracted from the different OCs. Kruskal-Wallis test based on probability values was used to identify the significant features. For the automation of fault detection system, a comparative study was done using the random forest, multilayer perceptron, and J48 classifiers. The proposed method exhibits 96.5 % accuracy using random forest classifier with combined kurtosis, skewness, and standard deviation features.

        <P>Rabi oscillations of a two-level atom appear as a quantum interference effect between the amplitudes associated with atomic superpositions, in analogy with the classic double-slit experiment which manifests a sinusoidal interference pattern. By extension, through direct detection of time-resolved resonance fluorescence from a quantum-dot neutral exciton driven in the Rabi regime, we experimentally demonstrate triple-slit-type quantum interference via quantum erasure in a V-type three-level artificial atom. This result is of fundamental interest in the experimental studies of the properties of V-type three-level systems and may pave the way for further insight into their coherence properties as well as applications for quantum information schemes. It also suggests quantum dots as candidates for multipath-interference experiments for probing foundational concepts in quantum physics.</P>

        세계경제 대공황과 자본주의의 종말

        지난 세기에 지구촌은 정치, 경제, 사회, 종교, 문화, 환경, 기후 등 거의 모든 삶의 분야에서 많은 갈등과 변화를 보여 왔다. 더구나 21세기에 들어와서는 그 정도가 매우 심하고 빠르게 진행되고 있다. 20세기를 살다간 인도 출신의 영적지도자이며 사상가인 피. 알. 사카르(P. R. Sarkar)는 이러한 총체적인 변화는 지구회전축의 이동으로 인하여, 인간을 포함한 생명체의 의식이 급격이 변화되고 있는데 비해서, 기존에 가지고 있던 체제가 그러한 변화를 수용하지 못하기 때문에 일어나는 하나의 현상이라고 한다. 그는 특히 인간의 물질적인 삶을 지배하는 기존의 정치·경제 체제와 정신적인 삶을 인도해 온 종교·문화등 삶의 전 분야에서 지대한 변화가 올 것이라고 예측하였다. 현재의 세계 경제 체제는 자본에 의해서 지배되는 신자유주의적 자본주의라고 할 수 있다. 신자유주의 경제 체제 아래에서는 부와 소득의 극단적인 편중이 필연적으로 따르게 되며, 이와 같은 편중은 실물시장의 침체를 야기 시키는 동시에 편중된 부가 투기적인 금융시장으로 몰리게 되어 금융시장의 붐을 유발시킨다. 이로 인한 실물시장과 금융시장의 극단적인 불균형은 결국에 경제적 공황을 유발시키게 된다. 나아가서 화폐의 순환이 실물시장의 거래를 원활하게 하지 못하고, 현재의 상황처럼 투기부문에 집중되면, 공황의 정도는 더욱 심각하게 된다. 사카르는 자본주의 사회가, 자본가 그룹과 이들에 의해서 착취당하는 여타 그룹으로 양분될 때, 즉 사회가 착취층과 피착취층으로 양분될 때에 바로 자본주의 시대가 종말을 고하게 된다고 하였다. 그는 이런 양분 시대에 들어서면 경제 대공항이 필연적으로 발생하고, 이 경제 대공항이 심화되면서 생존을 위해서 마치 노동자 성향의 사람들처럼 비참하게 살아가야만 하는 “불만에 가득찬 계층들”이, 원래부터 노동자 성향을 지닌 “단순한 노동자”들이 가지고 있는, “눈이 먼 힘(blind force)”을 이끌어 자본주의를 붕괴시키게 된다고 하였다. 현재의 세계 경제 및 정치 상황은 바로 이러한 양극화된 상황에 놓여 있으며, 피할 수 없는 임박한 경제공황으로 인하여 자본주의가 붕괴될 것으로 전망한다. The global village went through a lot of conflicts and changes in almost all areas of life including politics, economy, society, religion, culture, environment and climate in the last century. Moreover, those conflicts and changes have been extremely accelerated and rapidly developed in the 21<SUP>st</SUP> century. The late Indian Guru and thinker P.R.Sarkar of the 20<SUP>th</SUP> century argued that such a holistic change is a phenomenon which is occurred because the existing system has failed to adopt the changes, while the consciousness of living organisms including human is rapidly changing due to the movement of the rotational axis of the Earth. He expected that there would be enormous changes in the existing political and economic systems that have dominated our physical life and in all areas of life including religion and culture that have led our spiritual life. The current global economic system can be regarded as a neoliberal capitalism dominated by capital. Under the neoliberal economic system, the extreme bias in wealth and income inevitably follows. This causes a recession in the spot market and the biased wealth is channeled towards the speculative financial market, creating a boom in the financial market. The consequent extreme imbalance in the spot and financial markets eventually causes the economic crisis. Furthermore, if the circulation of currency prevents the transactions in the spot market and the transactions are focused on speculation as in the current situation, the gravity of the crisis will be increased. Sarkar said the era of capitalism would end when the capitalistic society is divided into the group of capitalists and the group of people exploited by the capitalists, in other words, the society splits into the exploiting class and exploited class. He mentioned that the great depression would inevitably ensue in such a divided era, and the “disgruntled class” who are forced to live in misery for survival like the people with the tendency of worker would collapse capitalism by leading “the blind force” of the “unskilled workers” who originally have the tendency of worker. The current global economy and political situation is under this polarized situation, and capitalism is expected to be collapsed due to the inevitable imminent economic crisis.

        The utilization of unmanned aerial vehicles incombating illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta regions of Nigeria

        In contemporary surveillance and reconnaissance efforts, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been widely deployed in dangerous, low-altitude regions where manned aircrafts cannot navigate easily because of their size, purchasing costs for environmental remote sensing, monitoring, and combat mission for military operations. As UAVs are used in compromising situations, they are designed to be low cost in the event of failed recovery process and there is increased operational flexibility for military applications and non-military development. This paper provides an overview of the use of UAVs in combating illegal bunkering activities. It classifies these vehicles based on performance and size. The paper seeks to proffer potential solutions for its adoption in the Niger Delta for forestalling security, monitoring and surveillance of multinational oil companies’ pipelines operating in the region, tactical responses by security agencies to address emergency situations of oil spillage, and illegal bunkering activities for the promotion of the nation’s economic development.

        Adoption and deployment of 21st century technologies in armed forces operations

        Armed forces across the globe have been continuously modernizing through the deployment of hi-tech computers and nanotechnologies to perfect information acquisition and analysis and data transmission during missions and operations to make them more powerful and enhance their competitive advantage. This study presents an overview of the opportunities provided by twenty-first century military technologies and their advantages, specifically in terms of system integration, communications, and capability to shape modern warfare. The study concludes by recommending the importance of the Ministry of Defense through the provision of adequate funds and budgetary allocations for research, development, and procurement of high-tech equipment like TALOS, FIST, FELIN, IDZ-ZES, RATNIK-3 smart suits for tactical operations to support soldiers for an effective discharge of assigned combat missions during insurgencies and battlefield reconnaissance and domination.
