Determinants of Banks' CDS Spreads and Policy Implications

This paper analyzes the determinants of CDS spreads of major international banks using the data period of 2005~2009, which includes the global financial crisis. Taking into account that CDS spreads of Korean banks, for example, rose sharply although they were financially solid preceding the crisis period, we consider macroeconomic variables that reflect the economic fundamentals and foreign liquidity conditions of the economy, in addition to the financial indicators of banks. Empirical results, based on a panel regression analysis of 40 major international banks, shows that macroeconomic variables such as the fiscal balance, foreign reserves, foreign exposure, and financial indicators such as bank's capital, loan-to-asset ratio, and loan-todeposit ratio matter significantly in determining banks' CDS spreads. The results also show that certain variables became significant during the crisis period, which implies that it is important to manage and monitor certain variables during such periods.

In a wide spectrum of pavement rehabilitation techniques, the application of thin asphalt overlay on existing concrete pavements have shown its ability to restore the functional capacity of the pavement system as well as maintain structural capacity. Although, prior researches stated that it does not add to the structural capacity of the existing pavement, the insulation generated by the asphalt overlay can affect the behavior of the discontinuities in the continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) system by reducing the magnitude of its movement. The investigation of crack movement behaviors of the CRCP in Chungbu Expressway was conducted in 2-phases: without overlay and with overlay. Crackmeters were installed at selected crack locations and measurements were collected. In the second phase of the investigation, crackmeters were installed at the concrete layer of the CRCP before a 2-inch asphalt overlay was applied. Results have shown that the crack movements under a thin asphalt overlay have reduced by 80% which indicates an effective insulation of the CRCP.

An increasing global demand for natural resources and the inherent challenges accompanying this demand pose a great task for manufacturing companies. Apart from this, new technologies and a demographic change of the workforce as well as the desire for new individualized products make manufacturing more challenging than ever. To succeed in this new setting manifold perspectives of a factory have been proposed in order to enhance the understanding of the complex interdependencies between the factory elements. Against this background, this paper starts with a short overview regarding the paradigm change in manufacturing including contemporary trends triggering the requirements for factories of the future. Subsequent to that, a selection of factory perspectives is revised indicating the demand for a new holistic perspective of a factory that is more suitable with respect to the new trends. For that reason a new holistic perspective on the factory of the future is presented.

This review aims to provide an overview and update of current literature on the use of intranasal (IN) drug delivery in pediatric emergency medicine (PEM), in terms of the anatomy, physiology, pharmacokinetics, limitations, drug delivery methods, necessary training, safety, contraindications, effectiveness, current indications and trends, and implications for clinical practice and future developments in IN drug administration. We evaluate how IN medication use in PEM has recently evolved, what recent research has revealed about the utility of IN drug delivery in PEM, and what the future of IN drug delivery might look like.

Site index (SI) expresses the growth potential for a species on a given site. Three SI determination methods were used for each managed stand sampled in the southern portion of the Prince George Timber Supply Area (TSA): forest inventory, calculated growth intercept or height over age, and site index biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification (SIBEC). Interior spruce and lodgepole pine leading stands were sampled in the Bowron Valley and only pine stands were sampled in the rest of the TSA. In the Bowron Valley for both species, calculated SI was greater than SIBEC SI, which was greater than inventory SI. Increases were greater for spruce. In the remaining pine areas sampled, the same relationship was observed. Pine yield model projections indicate mean annual increment (MAI) culmination occurred 5.7 and 16.4 years sooner for calculated SI compared with SIBEC and inventory SI, respectively, with yields increasing by 8% and 13%. The increases could be due to improved silviculture, tree response to climate change or a combination of the two. Differences could result in a mid-term timber supply available sooner or a greater yield at planned harvest age. This is particularly important in areas attacked by mountain pine beetle.

Several ionic fullerene salts have been prepared based on a fulleropyrrolidine pyridinium cation and four different anions. The initial ionic fullerene can be easily prepared by quaternization of a pyridine-appended fulleropyrrolidine derivative in high yield. Anion exchange is a simple procedure giving several different salts of varying polarity. In addition to their characterization, the quantitative solubility of these salts has been studied in seven different solvents, including an imidazolium ionic liquid.
The Analyses of Environmental Factors for Curing Concrete Pavements Inside Tunnels

Tunnel construction in Korea has significantly increased since 2002. This is due to Korean government’s eco-friendly strategy to reduce lengthy and inefficient roadways in mountain areas, and to provide direct access to highway networks in congested urban area. Tunnel construction can be largely divided into two major processes; tunneling or removing of earth, and making of concrete wall and slab. For any concrete road construction, curing concrete is highly encouraged as it helps concrete to reach desired maximum strength and durability. However, it is also a tedious and time-consuming process. This paper provides data that support an idea of eliminating the curing of inner portion of the concrete slab in tunnel when the construction is conducted during certain time of the year and at certain geographical locations. It is a well-known fact that curing, which is a process to slow down evaporation of moisture within concrete, depends on environmental factors such as temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed. This paper provides comparative analyses of these environmental data obtained from both outside and inside of ten tunnels around various geographic locations of Korea. Based on these results, this paper suggests that curing is not required for concrete slab inside relatively long tunnels.
