A total of 41 species were investigated, including only one species in the check list of Korean insects, which contains five platygastrids. Eleven species of the family Platygastridae are described as new to science from Korea, viz. Allostemma bicolor Buhl & Choi, Amblyaspis koreana Choi & Buhl, Leptacis koreana Buhl & Choi, L. ocellaris Choi & Buhl, Platygaster ciliata Buhl & Choi, P. flavifemorata Buhl & Choi, P. kui Choi & Buhl, P. tripotini Buhl & Choi, Synopeas collinus Choi & Buhl, S. kimi Choi & Buhl, and S. pumilus Buhl & Choi. Further nineteen species are recorded from The Korean Peninsula for the first time, and some new records are added for eleven species, already known from the Peninsula. Keys are given to the genera and species of Platygastridae hitherto recorded from The Korean Peninsula. As a result, platygastrid fauna of The Korean Peninsula is composed of 68 species up to now.

<P>The basis for differences in the timing of systemic symptom elicitation in zucchini squash between a pepper strain of Cucumber mosaic virus (Pf-CMV) and a cucurbit strain (Fny-CMV) was analysed. The difference in timing of appearance of systemic symptoms was shown to map to both RNA 2 and RNA 3 of Pf-CMV, with pseudorecombinant viruses containing either RNA 2 or RNA 3 from Pf-CMV showing an intermediate rate of systemic symptom development compared with those containing both or neither Pf-CMV RNAs. Symptom phenotype was shown to map to two single-nucleotide changes, both in codons for Ile at aa 267 and 168 (in Fny-CMV RNAs 2 and 3, respectively) to Thr (in Pf-CMV RNAs 2 and 3). The differential rate of symptom development was shown to be due to differences in the rates of cell-to-cell movement in the inoculated cotyledons, as well as differences in the rate of egress of the virus from the inoculated leaves. These data indicate that both the CMV 3a movement protein and the CMV 2a polymerase protein affect the rate of movement of CMV in zucchini squash and that these two proteins function independently of each other in their interactions with the host, facilitating virus movement.</P>
Dynamic speckle illumination wide-field reflection phase microscopy

<P>We demonstrate a quantitative reflection-phase microscope based on time-varying speckle-field illumination. Due to the short spatial coherence length of the speckle field, the proposed imaging system features superior lateral resolution, 520 nm, as well as high-depth selectivity, 1.03 관m. Off-axis interferometric detection enables wide-field and single-shot imaging appropriate for high-speed measurements. In addition, the measured phase sensitivity of this method, which is the smallest measurable axial motion, is more than 40 times higher than that available using a transmission system. We demonstrate the utility of our method by successfully distinguishing the motion of the top surface from that of the bottom in red blood cells. The proposed method will be useful for studying membrane dynamics in complex eukaryotic cells.</P>
Living Related Liver Transplantation in an Infant with Neonatal Hemochromatosis

Neonatal hemochromatosis (NH) is a severe neonatal liver injury that is confirmed by extra-hepatic iron accumulation. Although a recent study described treating NH with exchange transfusions and intravenous immunoglobulin, liver transplantation should be considered for patients with severe liver failure that does not respond to other medical treatment. Herein, we report the case of a two-month-old female infant who presented with persistent ascites and hyperbilirubinemia. Her laboratory findings demonstrated severe coagulopathy, high indirect and direct bilirubin levels, and high ferritin levels. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging presented low signal intensity in the liver on T2-weighted images, suggesting iron deposition. The infant was diagnosed with NH as a result of the clinical findings and after congenital infection and metabolic diseases were excluded. The infant was successfully treated with a living-donor liver transplantation. Living related liver transplantation should be considered as a treatment option for NH in infants.

The optical and vibrational properties of the chalcopyrite CdGeP2

We grew CdGeP2 single crystals by using the horizontal Bridgman method. The oscillating transmission spectra of polarized light at various sample temperatures and the Raman shift as function of pressure were observed, and the dierence in the refractive index near energy band gap and the Biot dispersion of CdGeP2 as functions of temperature were determined. In the temperature range between room temperature and near 100 K, in which the thermal expansion eect is dominant, the temperature coecient of the optical energy band gap is given by dEg;op=dT = က4:95 10က4 eV/K. The Biot dispersion varied linearly within the temperature in the range between 100 K and 250 K, and the linear coecient of the Biot dispersion in that temperature range was about 1:6110က5 radm. We measured the Raman shift under pressure. The linear pressure coecient of the Raman modes in CdGeP2 could be divided roughly into three groups according to its magnitude.
