<P>Torsional behaviors of polymer-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CNT) yarn muscles have been investigated in relation to molecular architecture by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Two polymers with different stiffnesses, polystyrene (PS) and poly(styrene-b-isoprene-b-styrene) (SIS), were uniformly infiltrated into CNT yarns for electrothermal torsional actuation. The torsional behaviors of hybrid yarn muscles are completely explained by the volume change of each polymer, based on the height and full width at half maximum profiles from the AFM morphological images. The volume expansion of the PS yarn muscle (1.7 nm of vertical change and 22 nm of horizontal change) is much larger than that of the SIS yarn muscle (0.3 nm and 11 nm change in vertical and horizontal directions) at 80 C, normalized by their values at 25 C. We demonstrate that their maximum rotations are consequently 29.7 deg mm(-1) for the PS-infiltrated CNT yarn muscle (relatively larger rotation) and 14.4 deg mm(-1) for the SIS-infiltrated CNT yarn muscle (smaller rotation) at 0.75 V m(-1). These hybrid yarn muscles could be applied in resonant controllers or damping magnetoelectric sensors.</P>

Purpose: The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of a trauma team`s management. Methods: A total of 181 patients with severe trauma were retrospectively divided into two groups. Of these 181 patients, 81 patients without a trauma team admitted between April and October 2008 were assigned to Group 1, and 100 patients with a Trauma team admitted between April and October 2009 were assigned to Group II. We compared general characteristics, the length of stay in the emergency department (ED) and treatment outcomes (24-h packed RBC transfusion, length of intensive care unit (ICU) stay, length of hospital stay, in-hospital mortality, 24-h mortality) between these two groups. Results: The length of stay in the ED was significantly reduced in Group II compared to Group I (p=0.025). No significant differences were found in mean arterial pressure, Glasgow Coma Scale, Revised Trauma Score, Injury Severity Score, in-hospital mortality and 24-h mortality between the two groups. However, Group II had a lower amount of 24-h packed RBC transfusion and a shorter length of ICU and hospital stay than Group I, although these differences were not statistically significant. Conclusion: Through the establishment of a trauma team, the length of stay in the ED can be reduced remarkably. Furthermore, the need for 24-h packed RBC transfusions and the length of stay in the ICU and hospital were found to be decreased in patients managed by a trauma team.

Objectives: Suicide is one of the important causes of death. We suppose that celebrity suicide could affect the that of population. The main object of this article is to document the effects of the media coverage following the suicide of a well-known actress and politician. Methods: From october 2007 to september 2009, we analysed suicide rate, onset time, severity of suicide attempters or intentional self-harm patients (total 1,059 persons) visited four EDs in Busan after famous person`s death (A and B). Results: After A`s suicide, suicide rate has been increased (1.35% vs 2.02%, p=0.00), after B`s death, suicide rate also has been increased (1.35 vs 1.92, p=0.00). After B`s case, proportion of admitting patients has been increased (42.2% vs 48.3%) and number of patients admitting ICU has been increased (13.2% vs 24.6%, p=0.03). Conclusions: Media should care about this results when they report suicide of famous person and we should plan for appropriate treatment and go on with study and education for suicide prevention.

<P>PURPOSE: To overcome the problem of organ motion in intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), gated IMRT is often used for the treatment of lung cancer. In this study, the authors investigated the accuracy of the delivered monitor units (MUs) from each segment during gated IMRT using a two-dimensional detector array for user-specific verification purpose. METHODS: The authors planned a 6 MV photon, seven-port step-and-shoot lung IMRT delivery. The respiration signals for gated IMRT delivery were obtained from the one-dimensional moving phantom using the real-time position management (RPM) system (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA). The beams were delivered using a Clinac iX (Varian Medical Systems, Palo Alto, CA) with the Millennium 120 MLC. The MatriXX (IBA Dosimetry GmbH, Germany) was validated through consistency and reproducibility tests as well as comparison with measurements from a Farmer-type ion chamber. The authors delivered beams with varying dose rates and duty cycles and analyzed the MatriXX data to evaluate MU delivery accuracy. RESULTS: There was quite good agreement between the planned segment MUs and the MUs computed from the MatriXX within +/- 2% error. The beam-on times computed from the MatriXX data were almost identical for all cases, and they matched well with the RPM beam-on and beam-off signals. A slight difference was observed between them, but it was less than 40 ms. The gated IMRT delivery demonstrated an MU delivery accuracy that was equivalent to ungated IMRT, and the delivered MUs with a gating signal agreed with the planned MUs within +/- 0.5 MU regardless of dose rate and duty cycle. CONCLUSIONS: The authors can conclude that gated IMRT is able to deliver an accurate dose to a patient during a procedure. The authors believe that the methodology and results can be transferred to other vendors' devices, particularly those that do not provide MLC log data for a verification purpose.</P>

<P>Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in cellular signaling as second messengers. However, studying the role of ROS in physiological redox signaling has been hampered by technical difficulties in controlling their generation within cells. Here, we utilize two inert components, a photosensitizer and light, to finely manipulate the generation of intracellular ROS and examine their specific role in activating dendritic cells (DCs). Photoswitchable generation of intracellular ROS rapidly induced cytosolic mobilization of Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>, differential activation of mitogen-activated protein kinases, and nuclear translocation of NF-κB. Moreover, a transient intracellular ROS surge could activate immature DCs to mature and potently enhance migration <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. Finally, we observed that intracellular ROS-stimulated DCs enhanced antigen specific T-cell responses <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>, which led to delayed tumor growth and prolonged survival of tumor-bearing mice when immunized with a specific tumor antigen.
