Inhibitory Activities of Korean Plants on HIV-1 Proteaes

For the development of anti-AIDS agents, thirty-seven methanol extracts of Korean plant materials were tested for their inhibitory effects on human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1) protease. Extracts of seven plants showed more than 30% inhibitory activities on HIV-1 protease at a concentration of 100 ㎍/㎖. The bark of Berchemia berchemiaefolia, the leaf of Lindera erythrocarpa and the whole plant of Siegesbeckia pubescens exhibited significant inhibititory activites on HIV-1 protease with 56.2, 50.8, and 46.6%, respectively.

Analogues of 2(S)-5,2',5'-trihydroxy-7,7-dimethoxyflavanone, a naturally-occurring compound, which had been reported to have potent antitumor activity, were synthesized and examined for the cytotoxicity against three cancer cell lines. Among the intermediate chalcones and synthetic 5-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavanone analogues, (±)2',5'-dibenzyloxy-5,7,8-trimethoxyflavanone exhibited about 2-8 times stronger activity than 2(S)-5,2',5'-trihydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavanone against L1210, K562 and A549 cancer cell lines. In the structure-activity relationship, it is suggested that among analogues of 5-hydroxy-7,8-dimethoxyflavanone, the existence of two oxygenated groups of para-relation at C-2' and C-5' positions on flavanone B-ring, may be necessary to exhibit effective cytotoxic activity.

This study was performed to investigate the effects of calcium administration on the blood coagulation mechanism through APTT in the calf. Five male calves (70~90 kg) were used in this experiment. In the control group, heparinized normal saline (1 IU/kg/min) had been infusing into the jugular vein for 100 minutes. For the analysis of calcium effects on the APTT, the same solutions had been infusing during the first 40 minutes, subsequently the solution including calcium gluconate (3.3 mg/ml/min) had been infusing for 60 minutes. Blood samples were serially collected every 10 minutes for the APTT and platelets count and every 20 minutes for the calicum level during the infusion. In the calcium-treated group, after 70 minutes the APTT ratio (APTT heparin/APTT baseline) was higher than the therapeutic range. APTT was significantly increased at 50, 60 and 70 minutes in the calcium-treated group as compared to the control group (p<0.01). In the control group, calcium level was decreased significantly after heparin infusion (p<0.01). The platelet count was gradually decreased without significant variation in the both control and calcium-treated groups. These results suggested that APTT is slightly increased in combined heparin and calcium administration.

액체로켓엔진에서 고주파 연소불안정을 제어하기 위하여 인젝터 길이 변화를 줄 수 있는 백홀 스월 인젝터를 분석하였다. 음향흡수자로서 백홀 인젝터의 효과를 분석하기위하여 백홀 인젝터는 1/4 파장 공명기로 해석하였다. 이론적 접근과 음향 실험의 결과로부터 가변적 변위를 갖는 백홀 스월 인젝터가 연소실의 불안정 모드를 감소시킴을 알 수 있었다. 실험적으로 감쇠율을 측정하여 감쇠효과를 측정하였다. Swirl injector with adjustable backhole length was analyzed to suppress high-frequency combustion instability in Liquid Rocket Engines. In order to analyze the effect of variable backhole injector as an acoustic absorber, backhole injector was regarded as a quarter-wave resonator. As a result of theoretical approaches and acoustic tests, backhole injector with adjustable length could decrease the unstable modes of combustion chamber. And the damping efficiency was estimated by measuring damping rates experimentally.
L1210과 HL60 암세포에 대한 야생식물의 세포독성 검색

For the search of anticancer compounds from natural products. 43 plants were extracted with benzene and methanol, separately, and the extracts were screened for the cytotoxicity against L1210 and HL60 cancer cell lines. From the results, 22 samples in benzene extracts showed cytotoxicity against L1210 cells and 23 samples against HL60 cells, respectively. However, any methanol extracts did not exhibit cytotoxicity against two cancer cell lines, it suggested that cytotoxic compounds seemed to have low polarity. ED_50 values less than 5 ㎍/㎖ were observed in 14 and 9 samples in benzene extracts against L1210 and HL60 cancer cells, respectively.

The flower of Chrysanthemum morifoliurn L. has been used as "Kamguk" in the Korean markets instead of it from C. indicum L. In order to evaluate the quality of Chrysanthemi Flos, the method for isolation and quantitative determination of luteolin as standard compound has been developed. It is analyzed with HPLC using the solvent system of MeOH-water-acetic acid (30:70:5). The amounts of luteolin from Chrysanthemi Flos in Korean markets are in the range of 0.03-0.04%. The amounts of luteolin from the flowers of C. indicum and C. boreale are approximately 0.14% and 0.04%, respectively.
