Categorial Status of Null Operator Relatives and Finite Declarative Complements

In this paper I examine null operator relatives and finite declarative complements that are not introduced by the complementizer that. I argue that, contrary to standard assumptions, the clauses in question have no CP projection. They are bare IPs and not CPs introduced by a null complementizer. I provide a uniform account of the IP status of the clauses in question based on the Principle of Economy of Representation.
Fielding a Structural Health Monitoring System on Legacy Military Aircraft: a Business Perspective

An important trend in the sustainment of military aircraft is the transition from preventative maintenance to condition based maintenance (CBM). For CBM, it is essential that the actual system condition can be measured and the measured condition can be reliably extrapolated to a convenient moment in the future in order to facilitate the planning process while maintaining flight safety. Much research effort is currently being made for the development of technologies that enable CBM, including structural health monitoring (SHM) systems. Great progress has already been made in sensors, sensor networks, data acquisition, models and algorithms, data fusion/mining techniques, etc. However, the transition of these technologies into service is very slow. This is because business cases are difficult to define and the certification of the SHM systems is very challenging. This paper describes a possibility for fielding a SHM system on legacy military aircraft with a minimum amount of certification issues and with a good prospect of a positive return on investment. For appropriate areas in the airframe the application of SHM will reconcile the fail-safety and slow crack growth damage tolerance approaches that can be used for safeguarding the continuing airworthiness of these areas, combining the benefits of both approaches and eliminating the drawbacks.

In December 2006 a Heritage Centre was opened in theWadi el Gamal National Park in south-eastern Egypt,following a decade of research and cooperation with thelocal community of the area. This Centre, called BeytAbabda or House of the Ababda, displays the culturalheritage of the Ababda nomads living in the EgyptianEastern Desert (on the west shore of the Red Sea). Thiscentre is one of the first heritage centres in Egypt to startwith a holistic approach in mind, trying to reach theinhabitants of the region and the visitors of the nationalpark and informing them on cultural as well as ecologicalissues. The cultural identity and intangible heritage of theAbabda will be emphasized and the desert experience ofthe visitor will be presented in a new manner for Egyptiancultural heritage management. In the Wadi Gamal area allinitiatives, both ecological and cultural are included inorder to present the visitor with a complete view of desertlife, hopefully providing the Ababda community with asustainable income and amplified cultural identity.
A Defect Free Bistable C1 SSFLC Devices

Recent progress in both low pretilt and high pretilt defect free C1 surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal (SSFLC) devices is reviewed. First, by numerical calculation to investigate the balance between surface azimuthal anchoring energy and bulk elastic energy within the confined chevron layer geometry of C1 and C2, it is possible to achieve a zigzag free C1 state by low azimuthal anchoring alignment with a low pretilt angle. The critical azimuthal anchoring coefficient for defect free C1 state is calculated. Its relationship with elastic constant, chevron angle as well as surface topography effect are also discussed. Second, using $5^{\circ}$ oblique SiO deposition alignment method a defect free, large memory angle, high contrast ratio and bistable C1 SSFLC display, which has potential for electronic paper applications has also been developed. The electrooptical properties and bistability of this device have been investigated. Various aspects of defect control are also discussed.

Human embryonic stem cells (ESC) lines to be used for cell therapies must be created and maintainedunder strict conditions, excluding the use of undefined supplements. Two key steps in the creation of a new embryonicstem cell line are adherence to the substrate and derivation towards the formation of a primary colony. Thebovine parthenote embryo model was used to test different matrices of gelatin nanofibers and gelatin/galactomannanfilms to be used for ESC derivation and culturing. Gelatin/galactomannan films were made in two concentrations ofgalactomannan, 0.1 and 0.3%, in an aqueous solution of gelatin and tested for gel cytotoxicity using cumulus cells(CCs). CCs showed normal cell morphology, with no sign of lysis or degeneration in any of the matrices tested. Innercell masses of parthenote blastocysts (n=116) were placed onto the gel matrices for culture. There were three or fourrepeats for each matrix. Our results showed a good rate of inner cell mass (ICM) adherence on the gelatin/galactomannanfilms (41%-44%) and one derivative of the gel nanofiber (17% adherence to the substrate). These resultsencouraged us to try new gelatin formulations to increase the rates of derivation and cell proliferation under definedculture conditions to comply with good manufacturing practice directives for the potential therapeutic use of ESCs.

The effects of Lactobacillus buchneri 40788 and buffered propionic acid on preservation, intake and digestibility of alfalfa (Medicago sativa) and timothy (Phleum pratense) hay were investigated. During baling, forages were treated with L. buchneri 40788 (1.2${\times}$10$^6$ CFU/g) as a liquid (LLB) or as a granular preparation (GLB), with buffered propionic acid (10 mL/kg, BPA), or left untreated (control). Triplicate 500 kg round bales of each treatment were put up at two moisture levels for each forage: 17%${\pm}$0.33% and 20%${\pm}$0.30% for timothy and 17%${\pm}$0.20% and 19%${\pm}$0.27% for alfalfa (mean${\pm}$SD). Bales were sampled for chemical and microbiological analyses after 0, 30 and 60 d of storage. Compared to controls, all preservatives reduced (p<0.05) heating of both forages at all moisture levels with the exception of alfalfa baled at 19% moisture. After 60 d of storage, GLB reduced (p<0.05) moulds in 17% timothy hay as compared to other treatments, but at 20% moisture, moulds were reduced in LLB- and BPA-treated timothy as compared to controls. In alfalfa at 17% moisture, total bacteria were lower (p<0.05) in GLB-treated bales than LLB or control bales, but yeast and total bacteria were only reduced in BPA-treated alfalfa at 19% moisture. In situ DM disappearance of timothy (both moisture levels) and alfalfa (19% moisture level) increased (p<0.05) with LLB treatment compared to control. Digestibility of both forages did not differ (p>0.05) among treatments, however, voluntary DM intake of LLB-treated timothy (1.32 kg/d) was 22.3% higher (p<0.05) than control, and 14.1% higher than BPA-treated timothy. Treating timothy and alfalfa hay with L. buchneri 40788 or buffered propionic acid may improve the nutritive value of the hay when baled at 17 to 20% moisture.
