A Clinical Report of Repeated High Fever Treated with Dalwonum
Park, Bong-Ky,Son, Chang-Gue The Society of Korean Medicine Vol.29 No.5
High fever is a common symptom which is considered an important problem, especially in case of undefined causes. Even though most patients generally have been treated by western medicinal treatments, Oriental medicine has developed some prescriptions having therapeutic efficacy of anti-pyrexia. The present study reports a clinical case of prolonged high fever treated by herbal drug, Dalwonum. There was no specific cause shown by blood test, urinalysis or radiologic test to explain the periodic fever over $40^{\circ}C$, but body temperature slowly started normalize after administration of Dalwonum. This study informed us about the potent usefulness of Dalwonum as an anti-pyrexia herbal drug for patients having fever unresponsive to conventional therapies.

<P>Curcumin is a yellow-colored ingredient in dietary spice turmeric (<I>Curcuma longa</I> Linn). This nontoxic polyphenol has antitumor, anti-inflammatory, apoptotic, and antioxidant activities. The ingested curcumin is reduced to multihydrated forms with more potent therapeutic potentials by the curcumin reductase (CurA) from commensal <I>Escherichia coli</I>. In this study, we demonstrated that <I>Vibrio vulnificus</I> CurA (<I>Vv</I>CurA) with 87% sequence similarity to the <I>E. coli</I> CurA exhibits the curcumin-reducing activity through spectrophotometric detection of NADPH oxidation and high performance liquid chromatographic analysis of curcumin consumption and product generation. Afterward, we determined the crystal structures of <I>Vv</I>CurA and the <I>Vv</I>CurA/NADPH complex, and made the in silico model of the <I>Vv</I>CurA/NADPH/curcumin ternary complex through induced fit docking. Based on structural information, active site residues that play critical roles in catalysis have been identified and characterized by mutational and kinetic studies, leading us to propose the reaction mechanism of CurA.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Two Newly Recorded Species of Tineidae (Lepidoptera) from Korea
Vol.2012 No.05
The family Tineidae (Lepidoptera), known as fungus moths or tineid moths, contains more than 3,500 species in over 320 genera (Robinson & Nielsen, 1993). It has been known 26 species in 17 genera from Korea (Byun et al., 2009). In this study, two species, Monopis congestella (Walker) and Harmaclona tephrantha (Meyrick), are reported from Korea for the first time. According to Nasu et al. (2008), larvae of M. congestella were founded from nests of Goshawk and Ural Owl and the species distribute South-East Asia and Japan. The genus Harmaclona is known from the Oriental, Ethiopian Regions and the New World but only from China in North-East Asia (Huang, 2010). The adult photos and genitalia illustrations of those two species are provided.
Review for Herbal Drug and Drug-Induced Liver Injury
Park, Bong-Ky,Son, Chang-Gue The Society of Korean Medicine Vol.31 No.3
Objectives: This study aimed to review the general features of drug induced liver injury (DILI) and the important factors in consideration of herbal drugs and DILI. Methods: We reviewed general aspects of DILI such as classification, inducible factors, diagnosis methods, prevention, and the status of herbal drug-associated DILI via literature. Results: Besides the drug itself, genetic and environmental factors affect hepatic toxicity. There is a lack of definitive diagnoses of DILI by drugs, including herbal remedies. The possibility of herbal drug-associated DILI is exaggerated, and majority of herbal drug-derived hepatic injury could be easily prevented if Oriental doctors pay attention to this issue. Conclusion: This study can provide Oriental doctors an overview and be helpful in minimizing the episodes of hepatotoxicity in use of herbal drugs.
Vol.25 No.3
In this paper, we have studied on the optimal design of the optical compensation film for the TN-LCDs. To have wide viewing angle panels, several methods such as multi-domain method, optical path method, and phase compensation method have been proposed. Among these methods, this paper focused on the phase compensation method. In the phase compensation method, the phase retardation generated from the optical birefringence for the off-axis incident is compensated by using optical films with refractive anisotropy. To compensate the phase retardation of the TN-LCDs, we have proposed design concept for the biaxial optical films and analyzed the optical performance for the proposed structures. The calculation of the dynamic motion of the liquid crystals was based on the Ericksen-Leslie theory and the optical performance of the TN-LCD was calculated from the Extended Jones Matrix Method. From the results, we have confirmed that the optical characteristics of the TN-LCDs with the biaxial films have been improved considerably compared with the TN-LCDs compensated by the combination of the uniaxial films.
Vol.30 No.1
Currently, drug-induced liver injury (DILl) has been reported to be common cause of acute hepatitis, and oriental medicine and folk remedies are no exception. However, because many studies about DILl have been reported by western medical society. they has taken the initiative of DILl not only for western drugs but also herbs. So, academia of oriental medicine should make an effort to progress herb-related DILl studies. We describe a patient of acute liver injury which had been caused by comfrey, albizzia julibrissin, ulmus davidiana var. japonica, red ginseng. We hope that this report helps for studying the diagnosis and management of herb-derived DILl. and for establishing a standard of oriental therapy to DILL.
