<P>Chemotherapeutic strategies commonly use multiple agents to overcome drug resistance and to lower drug toxicity. Activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) is implicated in drug resistance in cancer cells. Previously, we reported that thiacremonone, a novel sulfur compound isolated from garlic, inhibited NF-kappaB and cancer cell growth with IC(50) values about 100 microg/mL in colon cancer cells. In the present study, we tested whether thiacremonone could increase susceptibility of cancer cells to chemotherapeutics through inactivation of NF-kappaB. Colon cancer cells were cotreated with thiacremonone (50 microg/mL, half dose of IC(50)) and lower doses of each chemotherapeutic agent (half dose of IC(50)) for 24 hours. NF-kappaB activity was completely abrogated in cells treated with a combination of thiacremonone and docetaxel, whereas thiacremonone on its own did not alter NF-kappaB activity. This combined drug effect was also found with other anticancer drugs in colon cancer and in other cancer cells. In good correlation with inhibition of cell growth and NF-kappaB activity, the combination treatment also regulated NF-kappaB target genes. Oral treatment of mice with thiacremonone (1 mg/kg) by administering it in drinking water for 4 weeks significantly augmented docetaxel (1 mg/kg, i.p., four times)-induced decrease of tumor growth accompanied with regulation of NF-kappaB activity and NF-kappaB target genes. These results warrant carefully designed clinical studies investigating the combination of thiacremonone and commonly used chemotherapeutic agents for the treatment of human cancers.</P>

To maximize the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the electrolysis of water, nano-grade $IrO_2$ powder with a low specific surface was prepared as a catalyst for a solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) system, and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) was prepared with a catalyst loading as low as $2mg\;cm^{-2}$ or less. The $IrO_2$ catalyst was composed of heterogeneous particles with particle sizes ranging from 20 to 70 nm, having a specific surface area of $3.8m^2g^{-1}$. The anode catalyst layer of about $5{\mu}m$ thickness was coated on the membrane (Nafion 117) for the MEA by the decal method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) confirmed strong adhesion at the interface between the membrane and the catalyst electrode. Although the loading of the $IrO_2$ catalyst was as low as $1.1-1.7mg\;cm^{-2}$, the SPE cell delivered a voltage of 1.88-1.93 V at a current density of $1A\;cm^{-2}$ and operating temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. That is, it was observed that the over-potential of the cell for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) decreased with increasing $IrO_2$ catalyst loading. The electrochemical stability of the MEA was investigated in the electrolysis of water at a current density of $1A\;cm^{-2}$ for a short time. A voltage of ~2.0 V was maintained without any remarkable deterioration of the MEA characteristics.

This study has intended to analyze relationship between the characteristics of both chemical materials' emissions and socio-economic situation in 353 administrative units (Dong) of Korea, and to assess environmental justice (EJ) level in accordance with chemical materials' emissions. To reach this goal, this study has developed two types of environmental justice index formulas composed of the multiplication of exposure risk index and vulnerability index, and used the formulas as EJ assessment frames. The exposure risk index is the multiplication of total amount grade and density weight of chemical materials' emissions. Vulnerability index consists two types such as vulnerability 1 (V1) and vulnerability 2 (V2). While V1 consists of both the ratio of the recipients of basic living subsidies and the weight, V2 is composed of both the grade of number of the socio-economically weak and the weight. Thus, whereas formula 1 is composed of the exposure index and the V1, formula 2 consists of the exposure index and V2. The smaller the results of calculation, the stronger the environmental injustice level. Final results are as follows: 1) From Formula 1, Hakjang-Dong (Sasang-Gu, Busan), Indong-Dong (Gumi City), Gamjeondong (Sasang-Gu, Busan), Bubal-Eup (Yicheon City) were identified as highly environmentally injust. 2) From formula 2, Indong-Dong (Gumi City), Bubal-Eup (Yicheon City), and NonhyunGozan-Dong (Namdong-Gu, Incheon) were shown highly environmentally injust.

We have investigated the ferroelectric properties of integrated Pt/SrBi2Ta2O9 (SBT)/Pt capacitors with capacitor-level dielectric of boron phosphosilicate glass (BPSG). A signicant reduction of remanent polarization (P-P^) was observed in the SBT capacitor as covered with BPSG lm and the polarization decay depended strongly on top electorde size. Detailed analyses showed the degradation resulted from bismuth loss in the surface region of SBT, which is closely related with the impurites diused from BPSG into SBT layer. The degradation of Pt/SBT/Pt ferroelectric capacitor was successfully prevented by inserting SiO2 layer as a impurity blocking layer between the SBT and the BPSG. Thereby device performances of SBT-based ferroelectric memory were also considerably improved.
Analysis of Complications Following Decompressive Craniectomy for Traumatic Brain Injury

Objective : Adequate management of increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is critical in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI), and decompressive craniectomy is widely used to treat refractory increased ICP. The authors reviewed and analyzed complications following decompressive craniectomy for the management of TBI. Methods : A total of 89 consecutive patients who underwent decompressive craniectomy for TBI between February 2004 and February 2009 were reviewed retrospectively. Incidence rates of complications secondary to decompressive craniectomy were determined, and analyses were performed to identify clinical factors associated with the development of complications and the poor outcome. Results : Complications secondary to decompressive craniectomy occurred in 48 of the 89 (53.9%) patients. Furthermore, these complications occurred in a sequential fashion at specific times after surgical intervention; cerebral contusion expansion ($2.2{\pm}1.2$ days), newly appearing subdural or epidural hematoma contralateral to the craniectomy defect ($1.5{\pm}0.9$ days), epilepsy ($2.7{\pm}1.5$ days), cerebrospinal fluid leakage through the scalp incision ($7.0{\pm}4.2$ days), and external cerebral herniation ($5.5{\pm}3.3$ days). Subdural effusion ($10.8{\pm}5.2$ days) and postoperative infection ($9.8{\pm}3.1$ days) developed between one and four weeks postoperatively. Trephined and post-traumatic hydrocephalus syndromes developed after one month postoperatively (at $79.5{\pm}23.6$ and $49.2{\pm}14.1$ days, respectively). Conclusion : A poor GCS score ($\leq$ 8) and an age of $\geq$ 65 were found to be related to the occurrence of one of the above-mentioned complications. These results should help neurosurgeons anticipate these complications, to adopt management strategies that reduce the risks of complications, and to improve clinical outcomes.
Highly efficient gene knockout in mice and zebrafish with RNA-guided endonucleases

<P>RNA-guided endonucleases (RGENs), derived from the prokaryotic Type II CRISPR-Cas system, enable targeted genome modification in cells and organisms. Here we describe the establishment of gene-knockout mice and zebrafish by the injection of RGENs as Cas9 protein:guide RNA complexes or <I>Cas9</I> mRNA plus guide RNA into one-cell-stage embryos of both species. RGENs efficiently generated germline transmittable mutations in up to 93% of newborn mice with minimal toxicity. RGEN-induced mutations in the mouse <I>Prkdc</I> gene that encodes an enzyme critical for DNA double-strand break repair resulted in immunodeficiency both in <I>F</I><SUB>0</SUB> and <I>F</I><SUB>1</SUB> mice. We propose that RGEN-mediated mutagenesis in animals will greatly expedite the creation of genetically engineered model organisms, accelerating functional genomic research.</P>
