Vol.25 No.2

Recently, the importance and interest about the assistive devices and assistive technology service for rehabilitation is being increased. Many people with disabilities are using suitable assistive devices to assist and get over their disadvantage. But most of the assistive device was standardized and it doesn't fit often to individual situation and condition. Therefore, the assistive devices should be modified to fit the user's condition and life environments. In this paper, we provided an assistive technology service for a child who has some difficulties about communication and learning due to the Cerebral Palsy. A switch was modified for him to help to cognize and express something. The switch was designed to be controlled by his finger which is unique method to move freely. After that, the child could freely communicate with other and the learn and read a book using the device by himself. Therefore, the learning ability was greatly improved and we expect that he will easily adapt to social life.

Vol.23 No.2

For the handicapped person who is in a difficulty of speech communication by cerebral palsy(CP), an augmentative and assistive communication (AAC) equipment was designed, implemented and applied. The AAC equipment was designed to generate recoded voice that is matched to the pressed word plate. A handicapped person by CP have been selected and after investigation of her disabled condition, the equipment was considered to be put on the knee of user who have to sit at a wheelchair. For the low power consumption, a PIC16F84 micro controller was used in the control module of the AAC and an IC record & play kit was used for the voice recording and generating the sound. The implemented equipment was tested by the selected disabled and it was verified that the AAC equipment have suitable performances as designed concept.

Proposal of a Simultaneous Ultrasound Emission for Efficient Obstacle Searching in Autonomous Wheelchairs

2013 Biomedical Engineering Letters (BMEL) Vol.3 No.1

Purpose Highly disable patients, who use the powered wheelchair, require an autonomous wheelchair for movement. Fundamental problem of the autonomous wheelchairs is safety. In order to dodge the obstacles, efficient searching method of the obstacles is necessary. Methods The proposed method utilizes multiple ultrasound emitters that generate signals of identical frequency and intensity. Corresponding sensors detect the reflected ultrasound signals, and the position of the obstacle is calculated based on the time of flight (TOF) of the ultrasound wave. It was carried out the obstacle searching experiments with proposed method. Results The results showed that the proposed method’s errors are within 1~2% which is much lesser than the general scan method. Therefore, the proposed method is suitable for autonomous wheelchairs as it facilitates detection of the nearest obstacle, and yields more accurate estimation of the position. Conclusions Therefore, the proposed method based on a simultaneous emission strategy is suitable for autonomous wheelchairs as it facilitates detection of the nearest obstacle, and yields more accurate estimation of the position.

      • Long-term outcomes in children with glioblastoma

        Song, Kyung Sun,Phi, Ji Hoon,Cho, Byung-Kyu,Wang, Kyu-Chang,Lee, Ji Yeoun,Kim, Dong Gyu,Kim, Il Han,Ahn, Hyo Seop,Park, Sung-Hye,Kim, Seung-Ki Journal of Neurosurgery Publishing Group 2010 Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics Vol.6 No.2

        Object
Glioblastoma is the most common primary malignant brain tumor; however, glioblastoma in children is less common than in adults, and little is known about its clinical outcome in children. The authors evaluated the long-term outcome of glioblastoma in children.
Methods
Twenty-seven children were confirmed to have harbored a glioblastoma between 1985 and 2007. The clinical features and treatment outcomes were reviewed retrospectively. All patients underwent resection; complete resection was performed in 12 patients (44%), subtotal resection in 12 patients (44%), and biopsy in 3 patients (11%). Twenty-four patients (89%) had radiation therapy, and 14 (52%) patients received chemotherapy plus radiation therapy. Among the latter, 5 patients had radiation therapy concurrent with temozolomide chemotherapy. Four patients with small-size recurrent glioblastoma received stereotactic radiosurgery.
Results
The median overall survival (OS) was 43 months, and the median progression-free survival was 12 months. The OS rate was 67% at 1 year, 52% at 2 years, and 40% at 5 years. The median OS was significantly associated with tumor location (52 months for superficially located tumors vs 7 months for deeply located tumors; p = 0.017) and extent of removal (106 months for completely resected tumors vs 11 months for incompletely resected tumors; p < 0.0001).
Conclusions
The prognosis of glioblastoma is better in children than in adults. Radical resection followed by concurrent chemoradiation therapy may be the initial treatment of choice.
