© 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.</P><P><B>Background – </B> It has not been clarified whether the disparity in ischemic stroke outcome between populations is caused by ethnic and geographic differences or by variations in case mix. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis can overcome some analytical problems but is rarely used in stroke outcome research. This study was to compare the ischemic stroke case‐fatality between two PSM cohorts of Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Methods – </B> Prognostic variables related to baseline characteristics and stroke care were included in our PSM model. Then, we selected 7675 Swedish and 1220 Korean patients with ischemic stroke from each stroke registers and performed one‐to‐one matching based on propensity scores of each patient.</P><P><B>Results – </B> After PSM, all measured variables were well balanced in 1163 matched subjects, and the 90‐day case‐fatality was identical 6.2% (HR 0.997, 95%CI 0.905–1.099) in Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Conclusions – </B> No difference is found in the 90‐day case‐fatality in propensity score‐matched Swedish and Korean patients with ischemic stroke.</P>

      • Genetic diversity and natural selection of Duffy binding protein of Plasmodium vivax Korean isolates

        Plasmodium vivax Duffy binding protein (PvDBP) is a micronemal type I membrane protein that plays an essential role in erythrocyte invasion of merozoites. PvDBP is a prime blood stage vaccine candidate antigen against P. vivax, but its polymorphic nature represents a major obstacle to the successful design of a protective vaccine against vivax malaria. In this study, we analyzed the genetic polymorphism and natural selection at the N-terminal cysteine-rich region of PvDBP (PvDBPII) among 70 P. vivax isolates collected from Korean patients during 2005-2010. Seventeen single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP), which resulted in 14 non-synonymous and 3 synonymous mutations, were found in PvDBPII among the Korean P. vivax isolates. Sequence analyses revealed that 13 different PvDBPII haplotypes, which were clustered into 3 distinct clades, were identified in Korean P. vivax isolates. The difference between the rates of nonsynomyous and synonymous mutations suggested that the region has evolved under natural selection. High selective pressure preferentially acted on regions identified or predicted to be B- and T-cell epitopes and MHC binding regions of PvDBPII. Recombination may also contribute to genetic diversity of PvDBPII. Our results suggest that PvDBPII of Korean P. vivax isolates display a limited genetic polymorphism and are under selective pressure. These results have significant implications for understanding the nature of the P. vivax population circulating in Korea and provide useful information for development of malaria vaccines based on this antigen.

        Comparison of Synthetic Lysine Sources on Growth Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Nitrogen Retention in Weaning Pigs

        We compared the effects of supplementing $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ to L-lysine HCl on growth performance, nutrient digestibility and nitrogen retention in weaning pigs. A total of 96 crossbred pigs, weaned at $21{\pm}3$ days of age and with an average initial body weight (BW) $6.23{\pm}0.01kg$, were given one of 4 treatments, which translated into 6 replicates of 4 pigs in each pen. The animals were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments according to a randomized completely block design (RCBD) as follows: 1) control-no synthetic lysine, lysine deficient (0.80% total lysine); 2) L-C (= 0.2% L-lysine HCl); 3) K-L-S (= 0.332% $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$, A company); 4) C-L-S (= 0.332% $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$, B company). Diets were formulated with corn, soy bean meal, and corn gluten meal as the major ingredients, and all nutrients except the lysine met or exceeded NRC requirements (1998). The lysine content of supplemented synthetic lysine was the same in all treatment groups except the control. No clinical health problems associated with the dietary treatments were observed. During the entire experimental period, body weight, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (G:F ratio) increased (p<0.01) in pigs fed the experimental diets supplemented with L-lysine??HCl or $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ produced by A company, irrespective of the two synthetic lysine sources. Although the supplementation of $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ produced by B company tended to improve the ADG and G:F ratio, significant differences were not seen among all treatments and tended to be lower than the L-C (L-lysine HCl) and K-L-S ($L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ groups using the product from A company). The digestibility of crude protein (CP) was increased by the supplementation of synthetic lysine (p<0.05), irrespective of the L-lysine source (L-C, K-L-S, C-L-S). The results of this study showed that ADG, G:F ratio, and CP digestibility improved when $L-lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ or L-lysine HCl was supplemented into the weaning pigs' diet. There was a clear difference in efficacy between the two $lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ products based upon the growth performance of weaning pigs. Consequently, the bioavailability of $lysine{\cdot}SO_4$ products should be evaluated before supplementation of synthetic lysine in swine diets.

        Development of a touch sensor capable of touch and touch load recognition

        <P>A capacitive-type touch sensor for detecting the touch position and touch load, simultaneously, is designed and manufactured using transparent electrode material. Generally, a touch sensor senses only the touch position. However, as the touch sensor proposed in this study is designed by separating the touch position and touch load sensing parts, it is possible to recognize the touch load, in addition to the touch position. The touch sensor is mainly composed of a polyethyleneterephthalate (PET) film substrate coated by an indium tin oxide (ITO), an ITO glass substrate, and a transparent elastomer. The ITO, as the transparent electrode, has an approximately 86% light transmittance and a sheet resistance of 30 Omega/square, and is patterned by photo-lithography process. A transparent elastomer, for load recognition, is sandwiched between the two transparent substrates and senses the magnitude of the touch load by detecting the change in capacitance value due to the change in the distance between the upper and lower electrodes, generated by the touch load. The fabricated touch sensor is 183 mm in width and 234 mm in length with a 10 in. touch area. It has 32 transmit lines for signal driving, 47 receive lines for signal detection, and two channels of ground lines. It can detect multi-touch with more than 10 points and sense loads up to 700 gf, simultaneously. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.</P>

        In case of deep etching to above 300μm depth, the etch-defects appeared at etched surface could be classified into three categories such as hillocks, reaction products, and white residues. Also, the difference in both the existence of etch-defects and etch rate distribution was investigated when the etched surface was downward, upward and erected vertically in etching solution. Finally, the nondestructive method for the thickness measurement of 5~20μm thick diaphragm was devised by the observation of transmitted light through diaphragm from a 50watt focused tungsten lamp.

        Sotalime-to-sodalime glass electrostatic bonding was performed by using Si interlayer and its applicability was evaluated by panel capping of FED in vacuum environment. The bonding properties of the bonded sodalime-to-sodalime structure were investigated and Mo-tip FED was successfully vacuum-packaged by the developed bonding technology.

        Strip-shaped diamond field emitter arrays were fabricated by using a transfer mold technique. V-grooves were formed on a single crystalline (100) silicon substrate by an orientation dependent etching(ODE) method. Diamond film was grown on V-grooved silicon substrate by chemical vapor deposition(CVD). Diamond field emitter arrays were formed by etching silicon substrates. I-V characteristics of the fabricated diamond field emitter arrays under 2 x10^(-6) Torr showed very sharp turn-on characteristics. Empirical result which was obtained in this work is feasibility of transfer mold technique for fabrication of diamond field emitter arrays. It may be possible to use the strip-shaped diamond field emitter arrays for the field emission display (FED) applications.

      • Sr(S,Se):Ce,Cl 박막 EL 소자의 발광효율

        The Sr(S,Se) : Ce,Cl thin film EL devices, with the double insulating layer structure and S:Se mole ratio of 1:9, are fabricated by co-evaporation of the SrS:CeCl₃powder and elemental Se. The EL spectra of this device show the blue emission band centered at 470nm. The capacitances of the insulating layer and active layer, measured using the Sawyer-Tower circuit, are 16.9nF and 11.4nF, respectively, and the characteristic constant is 1.56. The luminance and efficiency of the thin film EL devices fabricated in this study are found to be 14.46cd/㎡ (at 1kHz, 170V) and 0.01 lm/W, respectively.
