Noncoherent Unitary Space-Time Modulated DSSS Systems in Multipath Channels

In this paper, in order to effectively apply unitary space-time modulation to the direct-sequence spread-spectrum multiple-access (DSSS-MA) networks, we propose a low-rate, noncoherent, unitary, and space-time modulated DSSS system supporting any number of transmit antennas based on Walsh matrices. The proposed scheme simultaneously performs bandwidth spreading and space-time coding and outperforms those using high-rate, conventional unitary space-time constellations. Furthermore, the proposed scheme allows for a simple detector structure based on fast Walsh transforms.
Dyeing Behaviors of Berberine, Palmatine, and Dye Extracted from Phellodendron Bark on Silk Fabric

The dyeing behaviors of berberine chloride, palmatine chloride hydrate, and Phellodendron bark extract on silk fabric were investigated to evaluate palmatine as another chromophoric substance of Phellodendron bark. The dyeing conditions were composed of combinations of pH (3, 5, 7, 9), temperature (10, 30, 55, 80oC), and time (10, 30, 60 min). The results indicate that palmatine was comparable to berberine in the dyeing behaviors tested for this study and the results were statistically significant. The dye exhaustion and dye uptake of palmatine-CH were slightly lower than berberine-C, which however were not statistically significant. Similar to berberine-C, palmatine-CH favored a pH 7 condition for both dye exhaustion and dye uptake. However, palmatine-CH favors a higher dyeing temperature and longer dyeing time than berberine-C for superior dyeing results.

<P>Cryptosporidiosis is a diarrheal illness caused by apicomplexa parasite <I>Cryptosporidium</I> spp. In this study, to examine the overall infection status of <I>Cryptosporidium</I> spp. in individuals residing in southern parts of Korea, eight counties around Yeongsan, Seomjin and Nakdong River valleys was surveyed. The investigation was carried out from April to October 2005. A total of 9,498 stool samples were collected from individuals. Stool samples were analyzed for modified acid-fast stains, and DNA fragment extracted from positive samples was identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) for 18S rRNA polymorphic region. Oocysts of <I>Cryptosporidium</I> spp. were detected in 239 specimens (2.5%) by a modified acid-fast stain. Infection rate was not significantly different between male (2.2%) and female (2.8%) individuals examined (<I>P</I>>0.05). In the infection rate by age, totally 1-9 (4.8%) and 80< (3.7%) age group were shown to the highest, and there was shown to significant differences (<I>P</I><0.05). Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis of 18S rRNA gene from 51 isolates showed that all the isolates were identified as <I>C. parvum</I>. Our data collectively suggested that <I>C. parvum</I> infection is prevalent in the studied areas of Korea and more comprehensive nation-wide epidemiological studies are needed to elucidate the infection status of <I>Cryptosporidium</I> infection in Korea.</P>
The Effect of Freshness on Puffer Fish Toxin, Tetrodotoxin

K value (ratio of nucleotide decomposition) of dorsal muscle and TTX (tetrodotoxin) concentration in dorsal and tail muscles, skin and liver were investigated at regular time intervals during storage at 5℃ for 0 to 4 days in brown-backed toad fish (Lagocephalus wheeleri) and vermiculated puffer fish (Takifugu vermicularis) using biofresh analyzer and tissue biosensor, respectively. K value increased gradually whereas TTX concentration almost stable in puffer fishes body parts during storage period. The highest concentration of TTX was found in liver. No significant difference in TTX concentration was found between TTX content of dorsal muscle and that of tail muscle.
