This paper investigates the relationship between compactness and pseudo-compactness in subsets of C(X) where X is locally compact and first countable. Two primary theorems are proven. First, equicontinuity at a point is proven to be equivalent to the existence of a certain open cover of a pseudo-compact subset of C(X). The second theorem proves the equivalence of compactness and pseudo-compctness for closed subsets F of C(X).
Factors Related to Performance of Health Practices Among Asian Adolescents in the United States

Purpose This study examined factors related to positive health practices (PHP) among Asian adolescents. More specifically, it tested theoretical relationships postulated between PHP and social support,optimism, self-esteem, loneliness, and acculturation in this population. Method A correlational research design was used and a convenience sample of 151 Asian adolescents was obtained. Participants completed a demographic sheet and six study instruments. Results Significant positive relationships were found between reported performance of PHP and social support, optimism, self-esteem, and acculturation. A significant inverse relationship was found between loneliness and PHP. Conclusions Study findings extend existing knowledge and contribute to a more comprehensive knowledge base regarding health practices among Asian adolescents. Having this knowledge base provides practitioners with a better understanding of the factors related to health practices in Asian adolescents and assists them in developing culturally sensitive interventions aimed at promoting PHP in this population. 교정선교의 새로운 모형은 미국의 대중적인 투옥의 시기에 중요한 것이다. 교정선교의 잠재적인 형태는 수형자들의 수가 증가함에 따라 새로운 주목을 받고 있다. 이 논문에서 연구자는 뉴저지의 교정선교에 집중하는데, 전통적인 교정선교에 참여하는 복음주의 기독교인들이 수형자들의 마음을 적극적으로 개방하고 공동체의 변형을 위해서 개인의 회심을 초월하는 종교교육의 모형을 제시하는 것이다. 연구자는 여리고 선교의 명칭을 지닌 새로운 복음주의 집단의 사례를 제시한다. 교정 선교는 결과적으로 동정을 나누는 것이 아니라, 정의의 실천이며 실현인 것이다. New models for prison ministry are crucial during the current era of mass incarceration in America-a time when the potential reach of prison ministries can grow as the population of incarcerated individuals grows. In this article, I lift up one prison ministry in New Jersey as an example of how Christian evangelicals who are engaged in traditional prison ministry can bravely open their minds and hearts to models of religious education that go beyond individual conversion toward communal transformation. In this article I present an example of a neo-evangelical group named Jericho Ministries, Inc., a prison ministry that understood this and consequently tried to develop a prison ministry that was not only a charitable endeavor, but also a just one.
The thermal interaction of a buoyant plume from a calandria tube with an oblique jet

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Severe reactor core damage may occur from fuel channel failure as a consequence of excessive heat emitted from calandria tubes (CTs) in a pressurised heavy water (D<SUB>2</SUB>O) reactor (CANDU). The heating of the CTs is caused by creep deformation of the pressure tubes (PTs), which may be ballooning or sagging depending on the internal pressure of the PTs. The deformation of the pressure tube is due to overheating as a result of a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA) and emergency core cooling system (ECCS) failure. To prevent the exacerbation of the LOCA, circulating D<SUB>2</SUB>O in the moderator tank may be utilized by forming a secondary jet that externally cools the individual CTs. The buoyant plume develops around the CTs and interacts with the secondary jet at a certain oblique angle with respect to the gravitational axis, depending on the spatial location of the hot calandria tubes (or the hot reactor core region). This study reports on how the local and overall heat transfer characteristics on a calandria tube where the buoyant plume develops, are altered by the obliqueness of the external secondary jet (from a co-current jet to a counter-current jet) in a simplified configuration at the jet Reynolds number of <I>Re<SUB>j</SUB> </I> =1500 for the Archimedes number of <I>Ar<SUB>D</SUB> </I> =0.11 and Rayleigh number of <I>Ra<SUB>D</SUB> </I> =1.6×10<SUP>6</SUP> (modified Rayleigh number of 3.0×10<SUP>7</SUP>).</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A crucial role of relative orientation between mixed convection modes is observed. </LI> <LI> The extent of thermal interaction strongly depends on the relative orientation. </LI> <LI> Coolant flow is substantially diffused by a buoyant plume if counter-acting. </LI> <LI> Slightly oblique coolant flow to the gravitational axis provides the best cooling. </LI> </UL> </P>
EFFICIENCY OF ASIA-PACIFIC FUTURES MARKETS: AN EXAMINATION OF NEW ZEALAND AND HONG KONG MARKETS

This paper investigates the efficiency of the New Zealand and the Hong Kong Index and Index Futures markets using a cointegration and error correction based approach. The data for the study consists of the spot and futures prices for the NZSE40 and the HangSeng indices during 1992-1993. The study finds that the spot and futures markets are cointegrated for both the NZSE40 and the Hang Seng indices. Error correction models indicate an efficient system of information feedback between the Hang Seng spot and futures markets whereas the futures leads the spot markets for the New Zealand data.

In cooling circular components, it is often questioned whether uniform flow or localized flow, e.g., an impinging jet, is more effective. In terms of average cooling performance, the former seems to be an intuitive choice but in terms of coolant consumption, the latter appears to be more attractive. The present study systematically tackles this issue by directly comparing the two specific flow configurations in a crossflow plane at a fixed Reynolds number. Based on detailed local heat transfer mechanisms and the average heat transfer associated with each configuration, some suggestions are provided, which are limited to the two-dimensional analysis.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We experimentally examine the impingement of a fully turbulent round jet (with diameter <I>D<SUB>j</SUB> </I>) on a long circular cylinder (with diameter <I>D</I>) in the crossflow plane coinciding with the jet axis for <I>D</I>/<I>D<SUB>j</SUB> </I> = 2.5 and <I>Re<SUB>Dj</SUB> </I> = 20,000. Particular focus is placed on the kinematics of boundary layer transition that occurs and subsequently leads to a second thermal peak on the cylinder surface downstream of the primary thermal peak near the stagnation point when placed inside the jet’s potential core. To this end, spectral analyses of wall shear stress data and time-resolved velocity data within both laminar and turbulent boundary layers have been performed. The present study demonstrates that the root mean square (rms) fluctuation of the stream-wise velocity component increases along both boundary layers due to the propagation of external perturbations from coherent structures that are shed from the jet exit, which incites the transition of the laminar boundary layer. The transition causes the local heat transfer elevation that interrupts the monotonic decrease from the primary thermal peak whereas it plays no direct part in forming the second thermal peak. Instead, the second thermal peak occurs at a delayed downstream azimuth angle from the transition where the rms velocity fluctuations of the boundary layer flow reach their peak at the dominant frequency, equivalent to that of the coherent structures of the jet.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The propagation of perturbations from the jet incites the transition. </LI> <LI> The rms fluctuation of the boundary layer flow increases. </LI> <LI> The transition plays no direct part in forming the second thermal peak. </LI> <LI> The second thermal peak occurs at a delayed downstream azimuth angle from the transition. </LI> <LI> The rms fluctuation of the boundary layer flow reaches a peak causing the second thermal peak. </LI> </UL> </P>
