        What Does the Bibliometrics of an Interdisciplinary Field Tell Us?: The Case of Cognitive Science

        This study investigated the bibliometric characteristics of an interdisciplinary field, Cognitive Science, which consists of contributions from diverse fields such as psychology, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, and anthropology, among others. The results showed that there were 4,711 publications in Web of Science between 1900 and 2017, with an exponential increase in the number of publications in recent years. About two-thirds of publications were classified as social science, of which 41% were in the field of psychology. Seventy percent of the publications were journal articles, half of the publications were written by researchers in the USA, and 95% of the publications were in English. Corpus analyses of abstracts and keywords showed that frequently used words included cognitive, science, research, theory, model, cognition, information, learning, and psychology. These analyses also showed that research in this field centered on the common themes of cognition, information, psychology, language, learning, representation, artificial intelligence, and mind before 2010 and focused on more restricted themes such as embodied and extended cognition, morality and religion, quantum, and music after 2010.

        The new odd-burr rayleigh distribution for wind speed characterization

        Statistical distributions are very useful in describing wind speed characteristics and in predicting wind power potential of a specified region. Although the Weibull distribution is the most popular one in wind energy literature, it does not seem to be able to perfectly fit all the investigated wind speed data in nature. Thus, many studies are still being conducted to find flexible distribution for modelling wind speed data. In this study, we propose a new Odd-Burr Rayleigh distribution for wind speed characterization. The Odd-Burr Rayleigh distribution with two shape parameters is flexible enough to model different shapes of wind speed data and thus it can be an alternative wind speed distribution for the assessment of wind energy potential. Therefore, suitability of the Odd-Burr Rayleigh distribution is investigated on real wind speed data taken from different regions in the South Africa. Numerical results of the conducted analysis confirm that the new Odd-Burr Rayleigh distribution is suitable for modelling most of the considered real wind speed cases and it also can be used for predicting wind power.

        Characterization and Wrinkle Resistance Enhancement by Sol-Gel Method of Variously Pretreated Linen Fabrics

        In this study, wrinkle resistant finish by sol-gel method was applied to the linen fabrics that were pretreated bythree different ways as bleaching/causticization, bleaching/mercerization and only bleaching. The effects of these studiedmethods on linen fabrics were investigated by physical performance tests and characterization analyses, namely, FTIR-ATR,SEM and EDX. From the results of the study it can be said that sol-gel method was favorable in enhancement of wrinkleresistance of linen fabrics and mercerization as a pretreatment process provided more positive effects in terms of wrinkleresistance than the other pretreatment processes. Moreover, it was also observed that wrinkle resistant finish by sol-gelmethod did not lead to considerable changes in physical properties like strength and handle and in appearance properties likecolor. Characterization analyses confirmed the changes in chemical structure of the linen. In addition, sol-gel method wasalso indicated as ecological and advantageous due to non-formaldehyde release of chemical agents contrary to conventionalwrinkle-resistant finishing agents.

        Factors Affecting Food Allergy-Related Quality of Life From Parents’ Perception in Turkish Children

        Purpose: Food allergy (FA) affects the daily lives of children and parents in varying degrees. The Food Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire-Parent Form (FAQLQ-PF) is a valid and reliable instrument to assess the quality of life (QoL) of children from parents’ perception. The aim of this study was to validate and determine the reliability of the Turkish FAQLQ-PF and to assess QoL in food-allergic children. Methods: Children aged between 0 and 12 years and diagnosed with immunoglobulin E (IgE)-mediated FA for at least 1 month were enrolled. The English FAQLQ-PF was translated into Turkish according to the World Health Organization guidelines. The Food Allergy Independent Measure and the Turkish Child Health Questionnaire- Parent Form 50 were used for construct validity. Results: One hundred and fifty-seven patients participated. The median age of patients and FA duration were 2.4 years (1.2-5.2 years, interquartile-ranges) and 2 years (0.8-5.1), respectively. Ninety-six (61.1%) patients had anaphylaxis. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and intra-class correlation coefficient for test-retest reliability was good for all age groups of children (< 4, 4-6, and 7-12 years). Patients with either asthma or anaphylaxis had worse scores than others. Total scores of FAQLQ-PF tended to increase with age. Patients aged 7-12 had the highest total scores among all patients (2.2±0.1, 3.0±0.2, and 3.3±0.3 for < 4, 4-6, and 7-12 years, respectively, P < 0.001, P for trend < 0.001). Other factors causing the poor QoL were cow’s milk allergy, sibling allergy, mother’s age over 30 years, mother’s high education level and lower number of persons in household. Conclusions: The Turkish FAQLQ-PF is a valid and reliable scale. FA-related QoL was significantly worse with age. Coexistent asthma, anaphylaxis regardless of its severity, cow’s milk allergy, sibling allergy and the older and educated mothers seem to poorly affect QoL.

        Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy after Ibrutinib Therapy for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

        Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a devastating neurological disease observed nearly exclusively in immunocompromised patients. Recently, the introduction of monoclonal antibodies significantly inhibiting the immune system such as rituximab has led to an increase in PML cases. Although rituximab-based immunochemotherapy remains the standard of treatment for chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the importance of Bruton’s tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as ibrutinib is steadily increasing. However, long-term experiences regarding possible side effects of these new substances are rare. Here, we report the development of eventually fatal PML possibly associated with ibrutinib therapy for CLL after multiple prior treatment lines, including rituximab. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to report such findings. Since the last course of rituximab was applied over 3 years ago, it is conceivable that the strong B cell inhibition by ibrutinib led to PML. With increased awareness of this potential side effect, further clinical studies are certainly warranted to evaluate this possible association.

        Energy Consumption Model for Additive-Subtractive Manufacturing Processes with Case Study

        There has been a growing trend in industry towards the development of integrated manufacturing centers that combine several manufacturing processes, such as the mill-turn center. As additive manufacturing becomes a more widely adopted technology, combining additive with subtractive manufacturing in one machine is a logical evolution to provide the benefits of final parts made from raw materials with the dimensional tolerance and surface finish expected in many applications. An energy consumption model was created that accounted for the energy consumption during primary metal production, deposition, and machining phases of wire-based and powder-based additive-subtractive manufacturing processes. This model was applied to a case study where the energy consumption to produce sub-sized, sheet type, and plate type (size) tensile bars was calculated. It was found that the wire-based process consumed less energy during deposition, whereas powder-based was less energy consumptive during primary metal production and machining. The findings suggest that given the present understanding of the respective technologies’ capabilities, the desired final net shape will dictate the preferred manufacturing process with respect to energy consumption considerations.

        Facial Nerve Repair following Acute Nerve Injury

        Background Acute facial nerve iatrogenic or traumatic injury warrants rapid management with the goal of reestablishing nerve continuity within 72 hours. However, reconstructive efforts should be performed up to 12 months from the time of injury since facial musculature may still be viable and thus facial tone and function may be salvaged. Methods Data of all patients who underwent facial nerve repair following iatrogenic or traumatic injury were retrospectively collected and assessed. Paralysis etiology, demographics, operative data, postoperative course, and outcome were examined. Results Twenty patients underwent facial nerve repair during the years 2004 to 2019. Data were available for 16 of them. Iatrogenic injury was the common category (n¼13, 81%) with parotidectomy due to primary parotid gland malignancy being the common surgery (n¼7, 44%). Nerve repair was most commonly performed during the first 72 hours of injury (n¼12, 75%) and most of the patients underwent nerve graft repair (n¼15, 94%). Outcome was available for 12 patients, all of which remained with some degree of facial paresis. Six patients suffered fromcomplete facial paralysis (50%) and three underwent secondary facial reanimation (25%). There were no major operative or postoperative complications. Conclusion Iatrogenic and traumatic facial nerve injuries are common etiologies of acquired facial paralysis. In such cases, immediate repair should be performed. For patients presenting with facial paralysis following previous surgery or trauma, nerve repair should be considered up to at least 6 months of injury. Longstanding paralysis is best treated with standard facial reanimation procedures.

        An Experimental Study of Impinging Synthetic Jets for Heat Transfer Augmentation

        According to recent trends in the field of miniature electronics, the need for compact cooling solutions compatible with very thin profiles and small footprint areas is inevitable. Impinging synthetic jets are recognized as a promising technique for cooling miniature surfaces like laptops, tablets, smart phones and slim TV systems. Effect of jet to cooled surface spacing is crucial in cooling performance as well as predicting Nusselt number for such spacing. An experimental study has been performed to investigate the cooling performance of two different synthetic jets actuated with piezoelectric actuators cooling over a vertical surface. Results showed that a major degradation of heat transfer when jets are close to the surface is occurred. Slot synthetic jets showed a better performance in terms of coefficient of performance (COP) than semi-confined circular jets for small jet to surface spacing. Later, a correlation is proposed for predicting Nu number for a semi-confined circular synthetic jet accounting the effects of Re number (500 Rej 1150), jetto- surface spacing (H=D ¼ 2 and H=D ¼ 4) and the stroke length (1:75 L0=D 4:75 and L0=H < 2:5). It is found that correlation can provide predictions with an R2 value of over 98%.

        Tourette's syndrome manifests as chronic persistent cough

        Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by the presence of involuntary motor and phonic tics. Phonic tics can mimic respiratory system disorders such as asthma, and upper and lower respiratory system infections. We report on twins with chronic persistent cough (CPC): one of whom was followed as an asthmatic for a year and the other was diagnosed with recurrent respiratory tract infection. A careful history and neurologic assessment suggested that TS might be responsible for the first twin's symptoms but that the second one was probably in early TS. All the symptoms of the first patient diagnosed as TS showed a complete improvement with pharmacological treatment in two weeks. Since the history of CPC may in reality be TS, we recommend that TS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of pediatric CPC.
