Effects of surrounding and underlying shades on the color adjustment potential of a single-shade composite used in a thin layer

Barros Mariana Silva,Silva Paula Fernanda Damasceno,Santana Márcia Luciana Carregosa,Bragança Rafaella Mariana Fontes,Faria-e-Silva André Luis 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.1

Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the surrounding and underlying shades’ effect on the color adjustment potential (CAP) of a single-shade composite used in a thin layer. Materials and Methods Cylinder specimens (1.0 mm thick) were built with the Vittra APS Unique composite, surrounded (dual specimens) or not (simple specimens) by a control composite (shade A1, A2, or A3). Simple specimens were also built only with the control composites. Each specimen’s color was measured against white and black backgrounds or the simple control specimens with a spectrophotometer (CIELAB system). The whiteness index for dentistry (WID) and translucency parameters (TP00) were calculated for simple specimens. Differences (ΔE00) in color between the simple/dual specimens and the controls were calculated. The CAP was calculated based on the ratios between data from simple and dual specimens. Results The Vittra APS Unique composite showed higher WID and TP00 values than the controls. The highest values of ΔE00 were observed among simple specimens. The color measurements of Vittra APS Unique (simple or dual) against the control specimens presented the lowest color differences. Only surrounding the single-shade composite with a shaded composite barely impacted the ΔE00. The highest CAP values were obtained using a shaded composite under simple or dual specimens. Conclusions The CAP of Vittra APS Unique was strongly affected by the underlying shade, while surrounding this composite with a shaded one barely affected its color adjustment.

Track and Field Practice and Bone Outcomes among Adolescents: A Pilot Study (ABCD-Growth Study)

        Yuri da Silva Ventura Faustino-da-Silva,Ricardo Ribeiro Agostinete,André Oliveira Werneck,Santiago Maillane-Vanegas,Kyle Robinson Lynch,Isabella Neto Exupério,Igor Hideki Ito,Romulo Araújo Fernandes 대한골대사학회 2018 대한골대사학회지 Vol.25 No.1

Background: Osteoporosis is considered a public health problem with high worldwide prevalence. One approach to prevention is through the promotion of physical activity, especially exercise, during adolescence. Methods: This study compared bone variables in different body segments in adolescents according to participation in track and field. The study included 34 adolescents (22 boys), of whom 17 were track and field athletes and 17 were control subjects. Bone mineral density (BMD, g/cm2) and bone mineral content (BMC, g) were analyzed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (total body stratified by body segments). Peak height velocity was used to estimate somatic maturation. Results: Athletes had higher BMD (P=0.003) and BMC (P=0.011) values in the lower limbs and higher whole body BMD (P=0.025) than the control group. However, when adjusted for confounding factors, the difference was not maintained. The groups had similar lean soft tissue values (P=0.094). Training overload was positively correlated with BMD in the upper limbs (r=0.504; 95% confidence interval, 0.031-0.793). Although track and field athletes had higher BMD and BMC values in the lower limbs, these differences were not significant when adjusted for confounding factors. Conclusions: Track and field participation in adolescence appears to influence BMD and BMC in lower limbs, and fat-free mass seems to mediate this effect. Also, higher training loads were found to be positive for bone health in upper limbs.

Control of Post-harvest Anthracnose Infection in Guava (Psidium guajava) Fruits with Phosphites, Calcium Chloride, Acetyl Salicylic Acid, Hot Water, and 1-MCP

André Freire Cruz,Nathalia Lima Medeiros,Gustavo Lessa Benedet,Maira Borges Araújo,Carlos Hidemi Uesugi,Marisa Alvares da Silva Velloso Ferreira,José Ricardo Peixoto,Luiz Eduardo Bassay Blum 한국원예학회 2015 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.56 No.3

The control of anthracnose (Colletotrichum simmondsii) during the post-harvest stage in guava fruits (Psidium guajava L.) was performed by the application of phosphites [phosphite-K (40% P2O5 and 30% K2O) and phosphite-Ca (10.7% P2O5, 3.89% Ca, and 0.5% B)] including the Carbendazim as reference, calcium chloride (CaCl2), acetyl salicylic acid (ASA), hot water (HW), and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). These treatments were applied individually or in combination each other with two or three compounds. The evaluated parameters were diameter of anthracnose lesion (DL), number of lesions (NL), and fruit quality (fresh weight loss, pH, total soluble solids, and titrable acidity]. The fruits were disinfested, inoculated, and maintained in an incubator containing fluorescent lights at 75 μmol·m-2·s-1 (25°C, 12h photoperiod) for 5 days and were then analyzed. The results showed that the DL and the NL were reduced following treatments, and that the HW (47°C for 20 min) was the strongest and the 1-MCP treatment was the least effective. The physico-chemical characteristics of fruits were affected by some treatments without compromising fruit quality. The combination of treatments was also able to alleviate the anthracnose effect on fruits compared to individual treatments and the control without affect the fruit quality. The combinations which included the HW treatment showed the best performance to control this disease, particularly when combined with the 1-MCP and phosphite.

        Andréia Mitidieri,Maria Beatriz Gurian,Ana Paula Silva,Kalil Tawasha,Omero Poli-Neto,Antônio Nogueira,Francisco Reis,Júlio Rosa-e-Silva 대한약침학회 2015 Journal of pharmacopuncture Vol.18 No.4

Objectives: This study used semiology based on traditionalChinese medicine (TCM) to investigate vital energy(Qi) behavior in women with abdominal myofascialpain syndrome (AMPS). Methods: Fifty women diagnosed with chronic pelvicpain (CPP) secondary to AMPS were evaluated by usinga questionnaire based on the theories of “yin-yang,”“zang-fu”, and “five elements”. We assessed the followingaspects of the illness: symptomatology; specific locationof myofascial trigger points (MTrPs); onset, cause, durationand frequency of symptoms; and patient and familyhistory. The patients tongues, lips, skin colors, and tonesof speech were examined. Patients were questioned onvarious aspects related to breathing, sweating, sleepquality, emotions, and preferences related to color, food, flavors, and weather or seasons. Thirst, gastrointestinaldysfunction, excreta (feces and urine), menstrual cycle, the five senses, and characteristic pain symptoms relatedto headache, musculoskeletal pain, abdomen, andchest were also investigated. Results: Patients were between 22 and 56 years old,and most were married (78%), possessed a elementaryschool (66%), and had one or two children (76%). Themean body mass index and body fat were 26.86 kg/cm2(range: 17.7 — 39.0) and 32.4% (range: 10.7 — 45.7), respectively. A large majority of women (96%) exhibitedalterations in the kidney meridian, and 98% hadan altered gallbladder meridian. We observed majorchanges in the kidney and the gallbladder Qi meridiansin 76% and 62% of patients, respectively. Five of thetwelve meridians analyzed exhibited Qi patterns similarto pelvic innervation Qi and meridians, indicatingthat the paths of some of these meridians were directlyrelated to innervation of the pelvic floor and abdominalregion. Conclusion: The women in this study showed changesin the behavior of the energy meridians, and the pathsof some of the meridians were directly related to innervationof the pelvic floor and abdominal region.

Measurements of Microhardness During Transient Horizontal Directional Solidification of Al-Rich Al-Cu Alloys: Effect of Thermal Parameters, Primary Dendrite Arm Spacing and Al2Cu Intermetallic Phase

        André Santos Barros,Igor Alexsander Magno,Fabrício Andrade Souza,Carlos Alberto Mota,Antonio Luciano Moreira,Maria Adrina Silva,Otávio Lima Rocha 대한금속·재료학회 2015 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.21 No.3

In this work, the effect of the growth rate (VL) and cooling rate (TR), primary dendritic arm spacing (1) and Al2Cu intermetallic phase on the microhardness was investigated during transient horizontal directional solidification of Al-3wt%Cu and Al-8wt%Cu alloys. Microstructural characterization of the investigated alloys was performed using traditional techniques of metallography, optical and SEM microscopy and X-Ray diffraction. The microhardness evolution as a function of the thermal and microstructural parameters (VL, TR, and 1) was evaluated using power and Hall-Petch type experimental laws, which were compared with other laws in the literature. In order to examine the effect of the Al2Cu intermetallic phase, microhardness measurements were performed in interdendritic regions. Finally, a comparative analysis was performed between the experimental data of this work and theoretical models from the literature that have been proposed to predict primary dendrite arm spacing, which have been tested in numerous works considering upward directional solidification.

Influence of pain-relieving therapies on inflammation and the expression of proinflammatory neuropeptides after dental bleaching treatment

da Silva Livia Maria Alves Valentim,Cintra Luciano Tavares Angelo,Gallinari Marjorie de Oliveira,Benetti Francine,Rahal Vanessa,Ervolino Edilson,de Alcântara Sibele,Briso André Luiz Fraga 대한치과보존학회 2020 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.45 No.2

Objectives: To minimize the tooth sensitivity caused by in-office bleaching, many dentists use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and topical desensitizing gels containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of these substances on inflammation and the expression of substance P and calcitonin gene-related peptide in pulp nerve fibers. Materials and Methods: Seventy-two rats were divided into 6 groups as follows: GI, control; GII, only dental bleaching; GIII, only ibuprofen; GIV, ibuprofen administered 30 minutes before and after the bleaching treatment and every 12 hours until the analysis; GV, only topical application of a desensitizing agent; and GVI, topical application of a desensitizing agent before dental bleaching. Placebo gel was applied to the upper left jaw and the bleaching agent was applied to the upper right jaw in all groups. Subsequently, the groups were divided into 3 subgroups based on the time of analysis: 0, 24, and 48 hours after bleaching (n = 8). The rats were euthanized and the maxillae were processed and evaluated by histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. The data were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by the Dunn test (p < 0.05). Results: In the bleaching groups, the inflammatory process and expression of neuropeptides decreased over time. The animals in which a desensitizing agent was applied showed better results within 24 hours. Conclusions: The use of a desensitizing agent had positive effects on inflammation and painrelated neuropeptide expression, minimizing the painful effects of dental bleaching treatment.

Can different agents reduce the damage caused by bleaching gel to pulp tissue? A systematic review of basic research

Batista Letícia Aparecida Silva, dos Reis-Prado Alexandre Henrique,Chaves Hebertt Gonzaga dos Santos,de Arantes Lara Cancella,Morgan Luís Fernando Santos Alves,André Carolina Bosso,Suzuki Thaís Yumi,Be 대한치과보존학회 2023 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.48 No.4

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of different topical/systemic agents in reducing the damage caused by bleaching gel to pulp tissue or cells. Materials and Methods: Electronic searches were performed in July 2023. In vivo and in vitro studies evaluating the effects of different topical or systemic agents on pulp inflammation or cytotoxicity after exposure to bleaching agents were included. The risk of bias was assessed. Results: Out of 1,112 articles, 27 were included. Nine animal studies evaluated remineralizing/anti-inflammatories agents in rat molars subjected to bleaching with 35%– 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Five of these studies demonstrated a significant reduction in inflammation caused by HP when combined with bioglass or MI Paste Plus (GC America), or following KF-desensitizing or Otosporin treatment (n = 3). However, orally administered drugs did not reduce pulp inflammation (n = 4). Cytotoxicity (n = 17) was primarily assessed using the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay on human dental pulp cells and mouse dental papilla Cell-23 cells. Certain substances, including sodium ascorbate, butein, manganese chloride, and peroxidase, were found to reduce cytotoxicity, particularly when applied prior to bleaching. The risk of bias was high in animal studies and low in laboratory studies. Conclusions: Few in vivo studies have evaluated agents to reduce the damage caused by bleaching gel to pulp tissue. Within the limitations of these studies, it was found that topical agents were effective in reducing pulp inflammation in animals and cytotoxicity. Further analyses with human pulp are required to substantiate these findings.

Corrosion resistance assessment of nickel-titanium endodontic files with and without heat treatment

Costa Tatiana Dias,Silva Elison da Fonseca e,Caetano Paula Liparini,Campos Marcio José da Silva,Resende Leandro Marques,Machado André Guimarães,do Carmo Antônio Márcio Resende 대한치과보존학회 2021 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.46 No.1

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the corrosion resistance of heat-treated (Reciproc and WaveOne) and non-heat-treated (ProTaper and Mtwo) superelastic nickel-titanium endodontic files when immersed in a 5.25% sodium hypochlorite solution. Materials and Methods: Anodic polarization curves were obtained with potential sweeps that began at the open circuit potential or corrosion potential (Ecorr). The pitting potential (Epit) was identified on the anodic polarization curve as the potential at which a sudden increase in current was observed. The micromorphology of the 28 tested files was analyzed before and after the electrochemical assay using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance with the post hoc Bonferroni test (for Ecorr) and the Student t-test for independent samples (for Epit). Results: The mean Ecorr values were 0.506 V for ProTaper, 0.348 V for Mtwo, 0.542 V for Reciproc, and 0.321 V for WaveOne files. Only WaveOne and Protaper files exhibited pitting corrosion, with Epit values of 0.879 V and 0.904 V, respectively. On the SEM images of the ProTaper and WaveOne files, cavities suggestive of pitting corrosion were detected. Conclusions: Signs of corrosion were observed in both heat-treated and non-heat-treated files. Of the evaluated files, WaveOne (a heat-treated file) and ProTaper (a non-heat-treated file) exhibited the lowest corrosion resistance.

Selection of new sweet potato genotypes based on production parameters, physical root characteristics and resistance to Euscepes postfasciatus

Murilo Henrique Souza Leal,André Ricardo Zeist,Nilson Rodrigues Júnior,André Dutra Silva Júnior,José Henrique Verhalem Arantes,Jair Garcia Neto,Julia Roberta Sanches de Pieri,Amanda Carvalho Perrud 한국작물학회 2021 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.24 No.3

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) is a root that allows healthy eating and combats malnutrition. There is a need for more productive sweet potato genotypes displaying good resistance and a favorable appearance and shape. New genotypes that are more productive, resistant to the main soil pests and with good physical characteristics would contribute to meet the needs of producers and the demands of consumers. The aim of this study was to develop and select sweet potato genotypes regarding agronomic and physical root parameters. The new genotypes were obtained through the cross-linking of 22 parents with commercial characteristics. Subsequently, 386 experimental genotypes were conducted in the feld in an experimental design consisting of augmented blocks with intercalated controls. Aspects related to agronomic, physical root characteristics and resistance to Euscepes postfasciatus were explored. Genotypes with higher performance than the controls were identifed for all assessed parameters. The genotypes UZBD-K-09, UZBD-K-56 and UZBD-K-78, with purple fesh roots, UZBD-F-15 and UZBD-F-34, with orange fesh, and UZBD-K-70, with a white fesh were selected.

Effects of ninety minutes per week of continuous aerobic exercise on blood pressure in hypertensive obese humans

        Felipe Lovaglio Belozo,Carlos K. Katashima,André V. Cordeiro,Luciene Lenhare,Jean F. Alves,Vagner Ramon Rodrigues Silva 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

The main objective of this study was to examine the effect of continu-ous aerobic training (CAT) in hypertensive, obese people. Seven pa-tients of average age (45.3±3.9 years), height (1.63±0.1 m), body weight (89.09±22.0 kg), and body mass index (33.44±8.6 kg/m2) were subjected to the training. CAT was performed in thrice-weekly nonconsecutive sessions (90 min per week) with intervals of 48 hr between each ses-sion. The training sessions entailed 30 min of walking at an intensity of 70%–80% of the maximum heart rate (MHR) on a treadmill over a period of eight weeks, giving a total of 24 sessions. Through correlation analy-ses, we found significant improvement in the systolic pressure (R=0.5675, P=0.0253) and diastolic pressure (R=0.7083, P=0.0088) when the last session was compared to the first session of training. We found no differences in the diastolic pressure and systolic pressure be-fore, during and after 15 min of the protocol exercise. The program showed a large effect size (ES) for systolic pressure (ES=0.85) and a small ES for diastolic pressure (ES=0.33). We found no differences in the blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) during and after the training of obese hypertensive humans, but we found a positively significant correlation between HR and BP in the last session and a large ES, sug-gesting that this protocol exercise might have significance effect in the long term.
