        Coal dust exposure induces proliferation and migration of human bronchial epithelial cells

        Background Coal dust exposure has caused a variety of lung diseases. In addition to genotoxicity and cytotoxicity, other biological changes caused by coal dust (CD) exposure need further study. Objective To observe the cellular transformation eff ects of CD exposure and explore its underlying molecular mechanism, human bronchial epithelial cells (BEAS-2B) were cultured with continuous CD exposure. Methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, colony formation assay, wound healing assay, next-generation sequencing (NGS) and western blotting were performed to observe the cell proliferation, migration, genomic transcription and pathological signaling pathways. Results We demonstrated that BEAS-2B cells with long-term chronic CD exposure show accelerated proliferation rate and enhanced migration ability, and have altered gene expression profi les and aberrant activation of EGFR/Raf/ERK and PI3K/ AKT/mTOR pathways. Conclusions The results indicate that chronic CD exposure could induce abnormal proliferation and migration of BEAS-2B cells, lead to the transformation potential of human bronchial epithelial cells.

      • Optimization dynamic responses of laminated multiphase shell in thermo-electro-mechanical conditions

        The optimization for dynamic response associated with a cylindrical shell which is made of laminated composites embedded in a piezoelectric layer which is subjected to temperature rises and is resting on an elastic foundation is investigated for the first time. The first shear order theory (FSDT) is utilized in order to obtain the strain relations of the shell. Then, using the energy method, the equations of motions as well as boundary condition of the problem are attained. The formulation of this study together with the solution procedure which is a numerical solution method, differential quadrature method (DQM) is validated using other researches. This paper presents a thorough study on the parameters which impacts the vibration frequency of the laminated shell. The results of this paper shows that any type of laminated composite shell can reduce the vibration frequency providing that the angle related to layer are higher than 85 degrees. Also, in order to reduce the effect of temperature rises, the laminated composites instead of orthotropic one can be used.

        Evaluation of sodium acetate and glucose as minor additives with calcium chloride as optimum mixed draw solutes for fruit juice concentration via forward osmosis

        The selection of an appropriate draw solution is decisive to augment the performance of the forward osmosis (FO) process with maximal permeate flux and minimal reverse solute flux. Inorganic salts provide higher permeate flux in FO, but high reverse salt flux (RSF) associated with greater diffusivity limits their potential application. Herein, the incorporation of organic compounds including sodium acetate (NaAce) and glucose in CaCl2 provides draw solutions with constant osmotic pressure for boosting FO performance. The PRO mode (active layer facing draw solution) is examined with 0.18m/s of cross-flow velocity using a polyamide membrane associated with a polyethyleneimine (PEI) interlayer on a NaOH treated polyacrylonitrile substrate. The 5% NaAce with CaCl2 as a draw solution (DS) delivers better performance against deionized water compared to glucose, resulting in lower RSF (6.64 g/m2 h) and higher water flux (23.9 L/m2 h). The NaAce with CaCl2 suppresses RSF up to 41% without a significant reduction in permeate flux compared to single salt DS. The optimized draw solution concentrates the orange juice, resulting in 2.13 L/m2 h of average water flux and 3.6 g/m2 h of RSF for 72 h, thus concentrating the orange juice from the initial concentration of 13 oBrix to 24 oBrix.

        Synthesis of a Chemically Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Adsorbent and Its Adsorption to Phenol in Aqueous Solution

        A novel organic/inorganic hybrid TVE-resin containing SiO₂ structure for phenol removal is successfully prepared by dispersion polymerization, in which the inorganic phase is composed of nano-SiO₂ modified by vinyltrimethoxy silane (VTMS) and the organic phase is constituted of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA). The chemical structure and physical properties of TVE-resin are characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM and BET. The adsorption studies imply that the novel materials show optimum adsorption capacity at pH=6, dose 0.1 g, contact time 60 min, initial concentration 3000 mg/L and room temperature. The pseudo first-order model can be well fitted with the kinetic process. According to the adsorption isotherm analysis, the Freundlich model gives a better fit to the experimental data, indicating a multiple molecular adsorption for phenol removal. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate an exothermic and spontaneous process. A mixture desorption solvent containing methanol and deionized water (v:v, 1:1) can regenerate the TVE-resin completely and the resin displays good reusability after five regeneration recycles.
