MAXIMAL FUNCTIONS ALONG TWISTED SURFACES ON PRODUCT DOMAINS

In this paper, we introduce a class of maximal functions along twisted surfaces in ℝ<sup>n</sup>×ℝ<sup>m</sup> of the form {(𝜙(|v|)u, 𝜑(|u|)v) : (u, v) ∈ ℝ<sup>n</sup>×ℝ<sup>m</sup>}. We prove L<sup>p</sup> bounds when the kernels lie in the space L<sup>q</sup> (𝕊<sup>n-1</sup>×𝕊<sup>m-1</sup>). As a consequence, we establish the L<sup>p</sup> boundedness for such class of operators provided that the kernels are in L log L(𝕊<sup>n-1</sup>×𝕊<sup>m-1</sup>) or in the Block spaces B<sup>0,0</sup><sub>q</sub> (𝕊<sup>n-1</sup>×𝕊<sup>m-1</sup>) (q > 1).

Breast cancer is the top cancer in women worldwide and its incidence is increasing, particularly in developing countries. In the United Arab Emirates (UAE), many cases are first diagnosed in later stages and at younger age compared to those seen in developed countries. Early detection in order to improve breast cancer outcome and survival remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control. Performance of breast self examination is one of the important steps for identifying breast disease at an early stage, by the woman herself. No information has hitherto been available about the frequency of this practice among female university students in UAE or about their breast cancer risk perception and therefore the present study was conducted in Ajman. It was found that 22.7% of the participants practiced BSE but only 3% of them practiced BSE monthly. Marital status but not age as significantly associated with age likelihood. The most frequent reported barriers for BSE were lack of knowledge, considering oneself not at risk and the absence of doctor advice. These factors need to be taken into account in intervention efforts.
A Note on Marcinkiewicz Integral Operators on Product Domains

In this paper we establish the Lp boundedness of Marcinkiewicz integral oper ators on product domains with rough kernels satisfying a weak size condition. We assume that our kernels are supported on surfaces generated by curves more general than polyno mials and convex functions. This generalizes and extends previous results.
Singular and Marcinkiewicz integral operators on product domains

In this paper, we prove $L^{p}$ estimates of a class of singular integral operators on product domains along surfaces defined by mappings that are more general than polynomials and convex functions. We assume that the kernels are in $L(\log L)^{2}(\mathbb{S}^{n-1}\times \mathbb{S}^{m-1})$. Furthermore, we\ prove $L^{p}$ estimates of the related class of Marcinkiewicz integral operators. Our results extend as well as improve previously known results.
Impact resistance of polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete two-way slabs

Concrete structures are often subjected to long-term static and short-term dynamic loads. Due to a relatively low tensile strength and energy dissipating characteristics, the impact resistance of concrete is considered poor. This study investigates the feasibility of using polypropylene fibers to improve the impact resistance of reinforced concrete slabs. Fourteen polypropylene fiber reinforced concrete slabs were fabricated and tested using a drop weight test. The effects of slab thickness, fiber volume fractions, and impact energy on the dynamic behaviors were evaluated mainly in terms of impact resistant, crack patterns, and failure modes. The post impact induced strains versus time responses were obtained for all slabs. The results showed that adding the polypropylene fiber at a dosage of 0.90% by volume of concrete leads to significant improvement in the overall structural behavior of the slabs and their resistance to impact loading. Interestingly, the enhancement in the behavior of the slabs using a higher fiber dosage of 1.2% was not as good as achieved with 0.90%.

This paper presents a fully automated stand-alone irrigation system with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) module. Solar energy is utilized to power the system and it is aimed to conserve water by reducing water losses. The system is based on a DC water pump that draws energy from solar panels along with automated water flow control using a moisture sensor. It is also fitted with alert and protection system that consists of an ultrasonic sensor and GSM messages sender that transmits signals showing the levels of the water in the reservoir and the battery charge. The control system is designed to stop the water pump from pumping water either when the battery level drops to equal or less than 10% of its full charge, or when the water level becomes less than 10 cm high in the reservoir. The experimental results revealed that the system is appropriate to use in remote areas with water scarcity and away from the national grid.

The number of complicated skin and soft tissue infections (cSSTIs) in the Arabian Gulf region has risen in recent years, particularly those caused by multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens. The high prevalence of diabetes, obesity, and associated cardio-metabolic comorbidities in the region renders medical and surgical management of cSSTI patients with MDR infections challenging. An experienced panel of international and regional cSSTI experts (consensus group on cSSTIs) was convened to discuss clinical considerations for MDR infections from societal, antimicrobial stewardship, and cost perspectives, to develop best practice recommendations. This article discusses antibiotic therapies suitable for treating MDR cSSTIs in patients from the Gulf region and recommends that these should be tailored according to the local bacterial ecology by country and region. The article highlights the need for a comprehensive patient treatment pathway and defined roles of each of the multidisciplinary teams involved with managing patients with MDR cSSTIs. Aligned and inclusive definitions of cSSTIs for clinical and research purposes, thorough and updated epidemiological data on cSSTIs and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the region, clearcut indications of novel agents and comprehensive assessment of comparative data should be factored into decision-making are necessary. The spectral features of pressure characterized by the human outer ear, head, and torso are vital for sound localization in humans, especially for sound above 5 kHz. Many studies have shown that spectral notches contribute significantly as cues for this purpose. These spectral notches and their center frequencies depend on the shape and geometry of each individual, so their characteristics are different between individuals. We used wavelet multi-resolution analysis to automatically detect the center frequencies of spectral notches in head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). Auto-detection of these notches at certain locations for an individual helps in using suitable, complete, 3D HRTFs from HRTF datasets that have similar notch characteristics for an individual. Symlet and Daubechies wavelets were successfully used at different decomposition levels for this purpose. Symlet2 gives the best performance in terms of the auto-detection sensitivity.
Effect of Global Geometric Imperfections on the Cyclic Response of Moment Resisting Frame Columns

This paper investigates the impact of explicit initial geometric imperfections on the seismic response of wide flange steel column sections in moment resisting frames. Ten wide-flange sections (five light and five stocky) were chosen in the parametric investigation. The columns were subjected to a combined effect of axial load and lateral cyclic displacement protocol as per ASCE guidelines. Target axial load ranging from 20 to 100 of the column axial capacity was chosen to cover a wide range of axial loads employed in practice. Nonlinear finite element was used to conduct the analyses throughout the paper. The theoretical models were validated against available experimental data. The study indicated that the reduction in the drift angle capacity of the imperfect compared to the straight sections is approximately ranging between 0% and 60% for various axial load ratios. Results has also revealed that the effect of imperfection is more pronounced for stocky steel sections under high axial load ratios, although other sections responded in a variable degrees. Design recommendations were proposed to aid in better simulation of advanced structural analyses.
