Cervical Symmetric Dumbbell Ganglioneuromas Causing Severe Paresis

We report an extremely rare case with bilateral and symmetric dumbbell ganglioneuromas of the cervical spine in an elderly patient. A 72-year-old man came by ambulance to our hospital due to progressive incomplete paraplegia. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated bilateral symmetric dumbbell tumors at the C1/2 level. We performed total resection of the intracanalar tumor, aiming at complete decompression of the spinal cord, and partial and subtotal resection of foraminal outside portions. Histopathological examination of the surgical specimen indicated the tumor cells to be spindle cells with the presence of ganglion cells and no cellular pleomorphism, suggesting a diagnosis of ganglioneuroma. Although the surgery was not curative, the postoperative course was uneventful and provided a satisfactory outcome. This is the fourth known case of cervical ganglioneuromas of the bilateral symmetric dumbbell type.

The influence of porosity (P) on Young's modulus (E) and Poisson's ratio of sintered steels produced from four types of steel powders was investigated. The values of E and depend mainly on the value of P, and those were a little affected by alloying elements. The relationships between E, , and P were described as following equations: and , where subscript 0 means P = 0, and and are empirical constants. These approximate equations showed good agreement with empirical results.

Background: The canonical Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway is a fundamental regulatory system involved in various biological events. ICG-001 selectively blocks the interaction of β-catenin with its transcriptional co-activator cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CBP). Recent studies have provided convincing evidence of the inhibitory effects of ICG-001 on Wnt-driven disease models, such as organ fibrosis, cancer, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and asthma. However, the effects of ICG-001 in atopic dermatitis (AD) have not been investigated. Objective: To investigate whether β-catenin/CBP-dependent signaling was contributed in the pathogenesis of AD and ICG-001 could be a therapeutic agent for AD. Methods: We examined the effects of ICG-001 in an AD-like murine model generated by repeated topical application of the hapten, oxazolone (Ox). ICG-001 or vehicle alone was injected intraperitoneally every day during the development of AD-like dermatitis arising from once-daily Ox treatment. Results: Ox-induced AD-like dermatitis characterized by increases in transepidermal water loss, epidermal thickness, dermal thickness accompanied by increased myofibroblast and mast cell counts, and serum levels of thymic stromal lymphopoietin and thymus and activation- regulated chemokine, and decreases in stratum corneum hydration, were virtually normalized by the treatment with ICG-001. Elevated serum levels of periostin tended to be downregulated, without statistical significance. Conclusion: These results suggest that β-catenin/CBP-dependent signaling might be involved in the pathogenesis of AD and could be a therapeutic target. (Ann Dermatol 31(6) 631∼639, 2019)
Electric-field Resonance Coupling between Human and Transmitter for Human Position Estimation System

In this paper, a novel human position estimation system using electric-field resonance coupling is proposed. There are various advantages of using electric-field for human position estimation system. The system is robust to illumination change, body-worn tags are not required and sensors could be hidden since electric-field can path through an insulator. Tags are not required because the system estimates the position by measuring the electric field transmitted along the human body which acts as an electric-field coupler. Moreover, the proposed system has wider sensing range and higher expandability to position estimation of multiple humans compared to the current system. Unlike the current system which only measures the electric-field coupled between human and transmitter, the proposed system measures the electric-field amplified by the resonance occurring inside the human (equivalent to giant antenna) to achieve wider sensing range. Meanwhile, the proposed system is also designed carefully to maintain the expandability to multiple humans position estimation. Based on the simulation results, it is verified that the sensing range could be up to 50[cm] with less than 5[cm] error. In the future, the proposed system could be a powerful alternative for the current system.
