      • A new control approach for seismic control of buildings equipped with active mass damper: Optimal fractional-order brain emotional learning-based intelligent controller

        Abbas-Ali Zamani,Sadegh Etedali 국제구조공학회 2023 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.87 No.4

The idea of the combination of the fractional-order operators with the brain emotional learning-based intelligent controller (BELBIC) is developed for implementation in seismic-excited structures equipped with active mass damper (AMD). For this purpose, a new design framework of the mentioned combination namely fractional-order BEBIC (FOBELBIC) is proposed based on a modified-teaching-learning-based optimization (MTLBO) algorithm. The seismic performance of the proposed controller is then evaluated for a 15-story building equipped with AMD subjected to two far-field and two near-field earthquakes. An optimal BELBIC based on the MTLBO algorithm is also introduced for comparison purposes. In comparison with the structure equipped with a passive tuned mass damper (TMD), an average reduction of 44.7% and 42.8% are obtained in terms of the maximum absolute and RMS top floor displacement for FOBELBIC, while these reductions are obtained as 30.4% and 30.1% for the optimal BELBIC, respectively. Similarly, the optimal FOBELBIC results in an average reduction of 42.6% and 39.4% in terms of the maximum absolute and RMS top floor acceleration, while these reductions are given as 37.9% and 30.5%, for the optimal BELBIC, respectively. Consequently, the superiority of the FOBELBIC over the BELBIC is concluded in the reduction of maximum and RMS seismic responses.

Nonlinear large deformation dynamic analysis of electroactive polymer actuators

Amir Ali Amiri Moghadam,Abbas Kouzani,Reza Zamani,Kevin Magniez,Akif Kaynak 국제구조공학회 2015 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.15 No.6

Electroactive polymers have attracted considerable attention in recent years due to their sensing and actuating properties which make them a material of choice for a wide range of applications including sensors, biomimetic robots, and biomedical micro devices. This paper presents an effective modeling strategy for nonlinear large deformation (small strains and moderate rotations) dynamic analysis of polymer actuators. Considering that the complicated electro-chemo-mechanical dynamics of these actuators is a drawback for their application in functional devices, establishing a mathematical model which can effectively predict the actuator’s dynamic behavior can be of paramount importance. To effectively predict the actuator’s dynamic behavior, a comprehensive mathematical model is proposed correlating the input voltage and the output bending displacement of polymer actuators. The proposed model, which is based on the rigid finite element (RFE) method, consists of two parts, namely electrical and mechanical models. The former is comprised of a ladder network of discrete resistive-capacitive components similar to the network used to model transmission lines, while the latter describes the actuator as a system of rigid links connected by spring-damping elements (sdes). Both electrical and mechanical components are validated through experimental results.

Application of Polyurethane Foam Loaded with a Schiff Base Ligand for Determination of Trace Amounts of Copper in Water Samples by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy

Moftakhar, Mahdieh Koorehpazan,Yaftian, Mohammad Reza,Nahaei, Samaneh,Zamani, Abbas Ali Korean Chemical Society 2014 대한화학회지 Vol.58 No.3

A column solid phase extraction procedure based on modified polyurethane foam (PUF) by a newly synthesized Schiff base ionophore, named 2,2'-{iminobis[propane-3,1-diylnitrilo(1E)prop-1-yl-1-ylidene]}diphenol, was developed for preconcentration step of trace amounts determination of copper ions in water samples by atomic absorption flame spectroscopy. The influence of parameters on the adsorption process such as sample pH, amount of modified PUF packed in the column, type and volume of stripping reagent and its flow rate were investigated and optimized. Under optimum experimental conditions, the calibration graph was linear in a relatively wide range ($0.005-210{\mu}g/ml$) with a limit of detection $0.002{\mu}g/ml$ of copper. The proposed method allows achieving to a concentration factor of >133. The capacity of a column (1.6 cm i.d.) packed by 6 g of PUF modified by 12 mg of the Schiff base was found to be $247.7({\pm}2.1){\mu}g$ of copper. It was found that the adsorption process was highly selective towards copper ions with respect to some associated metal ions. The presented procedure was successfully applied for determination of copper in some water samples.

The effect of carbon fiber length on the microstructure, selected mechanical, wear, and thermal conductivity of Cf/SiC composite fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) method

        Ghasemi Arman,Ramazani Mazaher,Bakhshi Saeed Reza,Al-Khafaji Ali Hussein Demin,Zahabi Saeed,Loghman Estarki Mohammad Reza,Zamani Abbas 한국세라믹학회 2023 한국세라믹학회지 Vol.60 No.4

This research aims to fabricate and develop a composite brake disc made of carbon/silicon carbide. For this purpose, the first silicon carbide nanoparticles were ultrasonicated with alumina sintering aid and carbon fi ber (between 10 and 20%) with different lengths of 3 mm, 10 mm, and 15 mm. Next, the fi nal Cf/SiC composite bulk was made-up via the spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. After that, the effect of different lengths of carbon fiber was explored on the porosity, coefficient of friction, fracture toughness, thermal conductivity, and microhardness of samples. The results showed that the density of sintered samples with a carbon fiber length of 10 mm was higher than that of samples with fiber lengths of 3 and 15 mm. Also, the hardness (25.79 GPa) and fracture toughness (5.72 MPa.m 1/2) of this sample were higher than those of the samples sintered with carbon fiber lengths of 3 and 15 mm. Further, this sample with the maximum density showed a coefficient of friction (COF) of 0.43. Since for aeroplane brake discs, the COF should be between 0.3 and 0.4, and the porosity of sam- ples should range within 3–5%, the samples sintered with the carbon fiber length of 10 mm had the nearby features to the preferred air brake disc indices.
