        Effects of chronic alcohol consumption on expression Levels of APP and Aβ-producing enzymes

        Chronic alcohol consumption contributes to numerous diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and liver cirrhosis. Epidemiological studies have shown that excessive alcohol consumption is a risk factor for dementia. Along this line, Alzheimer`s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is caused by the accumulation of amyloid-β (Aβ plaques in neurons. In this study, we hypothesized that chronic ethanol consumption is associated with pathological processing of APP in AD. To investigate the relationship between chronic alcohol consumption and Aβ production, brain samples from rats fed an alcohol liquid diet for 5 weeks were analyzed. We show that the expression levels of APP, BACE1, and immature nicastrin were increased in the cerebellum, hippocampus, and striatum of the alcohol-fed group compared to the control group. Total nicastrin and PS1 levels were induced in the hippocampus of alcohol-fed rats. These data suggest that the altered expression of APP and Aβ-producing enzymes possibly contributes to the chronic alcohol consumption-mediated pathogenesis of AD. [BMB reports 2011; 44(2): 135-139]

        Procurement Decisions on the Transportation of Food Aid in Humanitarian Operations

        Purpose The purpose of this research is to see how purchasing decisions affect food aid transit in humanitarian operations. In this context, the four criteria of transportation time, transportation costs, transportation capacity, and food loss and waste are assessed in relation to local and global procurement procedures, as well as the usage of pre-positioned stock. As a result, this research establishes the correlations between the criteria and gives implications for improvement. Design/Methodology/Approach Within the mono-method quantitative study, a single data collection method is used. We gathered data from respondents working in food aid using a survey, namely an online questionnaire. The data is then examined using the fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (fuzzy AHP), which is a multi-criteria decision-making technique. Findings Based on the four factors analyzed, the fuzzy AHP findings show that the preferred procurement approach, considering the four criteria studied, is local procurement, followed by the use of pre-positioned stock, and global procurement takes last place. According to the results of the cross-comparisons, humanitarian supply chain departments that focus on development aid allocate a relatively comparable percentage of pre-positioned stock and local procurement. However, in disaster relief, local procurement is by far the most favored sourcing method. Research Implications The result of the analysis shows that due to the time-sensitive nature of disaster relief, where the number of people rescued determines the response time, finding a way to increase the efficiency of humanitarian supply chain through local procurement to prevent food loss and waste and reduce transportation time is necessary. These results provide suggestions and implications for humanitarian organizations and academics. Regarding industrial implications, both development assistance and disaster relief managers and non-governmental organizations can benefit from this paper

        부산항과 상하이항 컨테이너 터미널 운영사의 경영성과 비교에 관한 연구

        각 항만의 터미널별 물동량을 기반으로 허쉬만-허핀달지수를 통해 부산항과 상하이항의 시장구조 측정을 실시하였고, 시장성과를 분석하기 위해 시장성과를 수익성과 성장성의 두 가지 측면으로 구분하였다. 수익성 측면에서는 각 컨테이너 터미널 운영사들의 가격-비용 마진율(PCM)과 자산수익률(ROA), 성장성 측면에서는 각 터미널의 처리 실적과 물동량 증감률을 통해 각 터미널 운영사의 성과를 측정하였다. 측정된 결과를 바탕으로 시장구조와 터미널 운영사의 성과에 대한 상관관계를 살펴보기 위해 회귀분석을 실시하였고, 결과를 상호 비교하였다. 연구결과, 부산항의 시장구조와 컨테이너 터미널 운영사의 성장성(처리실적), 상하이항의 시장구조와 컨테이너 터미널 운영사의 수익성 (PCM, ROA) 및 성장성(처리실적)과의 관계가 유의적인 관계로 나타났다. Due to the continuous increasement of the container cargoes, each container port market has been growing as well. Moreover, the competition among container terminal operators located in the same port is also growing in order to attract more container cargoes. This paper looked into the market structures, market conducts and market performances of container ports in Busan and Shanghai. The index which has been most widely used to measure market structure, the Hirschman-Herfindahl Index (HHI), is computed by squaring each supplier's market share, then adding the squared shares. This paper estimated the market performance as profitability (PCM, ROA), growth (total TEU, rate of the increasement of TEU) and examined the effects of the HHI on the profitability and growth in a container terminal operators in Korea and China. The major findings of this study is that the market structure has effects on market performance in Busan port (total TEU) and Shanghai port (PCM, ROA and total TEU). As a result of analysing this study, market structure has an effect on market performance in Busan and Shanghai port, but the power of influence can be changed by market concentration index and various market conduct of companies.

        Mine countermeasure missions(MCMs) may induce the loss of human and ship because of the covert of mine. In recent years, unmanned underwater vehicles(UUVs) have emerged as viable technical solution for conductimg underwater search, surveillance, and clearance operations in support of mine countermeasure missions because of her autonomy and long time endurance capability. This paper introduces a technical approach to mine countermeasure mission effectiveness analysis and presents some simulation-based analysis results for engineering of the UUV system definition which could be support analysis of alternatives for system definition and design.

        A Study on Estimating Container Throughput in Korean Ports using Time Series Data

        The port throughput situation has changed since the 2008 financial crisis in the US. Therefore, we studied the situation, accurately estimating port traffic of Korean port after the 2008 financial crisis. We ensured the proper port facilities in response to changes in port traffic. In the results of regression analysis, Korean GDP and the real effective exchange rate of Korean Won were found to increase the container throughput in Korean and Busan port, as well as trade volume with China. Also, the real effective exchange rate of Korean Won was found to increase the port transshipment cargo volume. Based on the ARIMA models, we forecasted port throughput and port transshipment cargo volume for the next six years (72 months), from 2015 to 2020. As a result, port throughput of Korean and Busan ports was forecasted by increasing annual the average from about 3.5% to 3.9%, and transshipment cargo volume was forecasted by increasing the annual average about 4.5%.

        A Study on Competitiveness Analysis of Ports in Korea and China by Entropy Weight TOPSIS

        This study aims to (1) to investigate what are the main factors for evaluation of port competitiveness through an analysis of previous literature review; (2) to compare port competitiveness among a sample of ports in Korea and China using TOPSIS; (3) to determine ways to improve port competitiveness in Korea and particularly for Busan port. After selecting the related criteria on port competitiveness for the analysis, the main relevant criteria are divided into three major categories: port throughput, physical and financial criteria in Korean and Chinese ports. The empirical results indicate that Shanghai, Shenzhen and Busan port are the first three competitive ports. Shanghai port ranked near the top port in this analysis, it ranked fist port in port throughput and port financial category (ranked third port in port physical category), Shenzhen port ranked second port in port physical and port financial category (ranked third port in port throughput category), Busan port ranked first port in port physical category, and Ningbo port ranked third port in port throughput and port financial category in this analysis. The finding to the study suggests that the port competitiveness ranking is similar to the current throughput ranking to the main container ports taken into account in the sample.
