The Distinct Role of Transition Metal Doping for LiFePO_4 Cathode Material

This study addresses the controversial issue of the effect of metal ion doping on the electrochemical performance of LiFePO_4. Metal doping is claimed to be a possible cause for the capacity improvement of LiFePO_4 as carbon coating. Results obtained inthis study show that dry-milled LiFePO_4 and LiFe0.9Cr0.1PO4 deliver 119 mAh g^(−1) and 101 mAh g^(−1), while wet-milled LiFePO_4 and LiFe_0.9Cr_0.1PO_4 deliver 149 mAh g(−1) and 138 mAh g^(−1), respectively. This indicates that the capacity improvement by metal doping is due to the carbonaceous materials produced during fabrication and not by the enhancement of ion diffusion. On the other hand, cycle test results show that metal doping enhances the rate capability at high C-rates by accelerating lithium ion diffusion.
Randomly distributed cracks in fuel cell electrode for enhanced performance and durability

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells are spotlighted as environmentally friendly power generation devices. This is the first study to introduce cracks into a fuel cell electrode, which are considered defects in a typical electrochemical energy conversion device. By introducing cracks in a simple mechanical method, the fuel cell's performance is increased and its durability is also improved. The morphologies of the cracks in the electrodes formed under various conditions was confirmed by scanning electron microscope, and the improved fuel cell characteristics were also confirmed through electrochemical evaluation.
초겨울 비단잉어에서 발생한 Aeromonas hydrophila에 의한 대량 폐사

Mass mortality was occurred in adult koi carp (Cyprinus carpio) at a private pond near Samchunpo city in the early November, 2007. Its water temperature was 11oC and turbidity was very high. The fishes diseased were shown widely distributed hemorrhages, deep ulcerations on the whole body surface and severe erosions in the all fins. In necropsy, excess ascitic fluid was observed and spleen and kidney affected were enlarged. In microscopic observation, it was examined widely distributed severe dermal ulceration, multifocal gill lamella hyperplasia, severe fibrinous pericarditis, multifocal nephritis and hepatitis. The bacteria suspected were isolated using tryptone soya agar and identified as motile Aeromonas hydrophila as results of biochemical tests using API 20E and 20NE. According to previous reports, A. hydrophila infection were mainly occurred in fingerling at high temperature. However, this case exhibited that A. hydrophila infection can develop on adult koi carp even in the winter season.

Polymer electrolyte fuel cells that use hydrogen and oxygen (air) as fuels are considered environmentally friendly devices because their by-products are heat and water. The research for improving the performance of such fuel cells has been progressed in various research groups. In this study, we tried to improve the fuel cell performance by introducing regular macropores into the fuel cell membrane-electrode assembly. The pores were prepared by simple mechanical post treatment on the prism patterned film to which the electrodes were applied. The membrane electrode assembly was inserted into a single-cell and subjected to electrochemical evaluation, and showed better performance than the conventional assembly.
Thin Carbon Coating Method on Highly Loaded Fuel Cell Catalysts for Improved Durability

Mass/specific activities of fuel cell catalysts has made tremendous advances in many research groups. No matter how high the activities, the activities must last long for commercialization of the fuel cells. Therefore, as a way to address this issue, a method of coating a carbon shell on the surface of the catalyst has been devised. Several polymers have been proposed as precursors for carbon shells. Adsorption processes and high temperature heat treatment are required to form carbon shells for these highly durable catalysts. In this work, we present a strategy for coating sufficiently thin carbon in highly loaded Pt-based catalysts.

Mandarin fish (SSOGARI: Korean name) has emerged as new aquaculture and aquarium fish among Korean native fish species. Unfortunately, this fish could not exempt from infectious agent invasion. As an epidemiological survey, high mortality of mandarin fish (Siniperca scherzeri) observed from a fish farm in Gyeongnam province of South Korea. The major macroscopic sign of the diseased fish was severe multifocal dermal ulceration. Histological observation revealed inflammation, necrosis and colonization of bacteria in various tissues. Seven bacterial isolates from the diseased fish were identified as Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (typical A. salmonicida) using API 20E and 20NE system. However, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay using two different primers (AP and MIY) revealed that the bacterial strains were not typical A. salmonicida, but atypical A. salmonicida. This study demonstrates that PCR assay is a reliable method for the confirmation of atypical A. salmonicida in mandarin fish as compared to biochemical tests. Furthermore, this is the first account of extensive dermatitis in mandarin fish due to atypical A. salmonicida infection, which has high potential in aquaculture and aquarium fish among native fish species.
말벌류 기후변화 지표종의 선발 및 활용 방안: 무인 모니터링 시스템의 개발

기후변화는 전지구적 현상이며 온난화를 주패턴으로 하며 이상기상 현상의 빈도가 높아지는 등 기후예측불확실성이 증대로 이어지고 있다. 이에 따라 농업생태계의 기후변화에 대한 적응과 변화를 지표하기 위한 수단으로 말벌류 지표종을 선발하였다. 기후변화지표종 선발을 위한 지표의 객관성을 높이기 위해 지표 수준별로 개량화하였으며, 이를 통해 장수말벌, 등검은말벌, 털보말벌, 황말벌 4종을 지표종으로 선발하였다. 이 종의 장기 모니터링을 위한 무인모니터링 시스템을 개발하였다. 이를 통해 전국적 모니터링 네트워크 등의 구축이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.
힐버트 변환에 기반한 순간주파수 추정을 이용한 개선된 심전도 유도 호흡신호 추출 알고리즘

In this paper, an improved algorithm for the extraction of respiration signal from the electrocardiogram (ECG) is proposed. The whole system consists of two-lead electrocardiogram acquisition (lead I and II), baseline fluctuation elimination, R-wave detection, adjustment of sudden change in R-wave area using moving average, and optimal lead selection. In order to solve the problem of previous algorithms for the ECG-derived respiration (EDR) signal acquisition, we proposed a method for the optimal lead selection. An optimal EDR signal among the three EDR signals derived from each lead (and arctangent of their ratio) is selected by estimating the instantaneous frequency using the Hilbert transform, and then choosing the signal with minimum variation of the instantaneous frequency. The proposed algorithm was tested on 15 subjects, and we could obtain satisfactory respiration signals that shows high correlation (r>0.9) with the signal acquired from the chest-belt respiration sensor.
Nail-Patella 증후군의 방사선학적 소견: 증례 보고

Nail-patella syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant pleiotropic disorder characterized by dysplasia of the nails, patellar aplasia or hypoplasia, iliac horns, and dysplasia or dislocation of the elbow. We experienced a case of nail-patella syndrome. NPS is a relatively uncommon disease; however, an understanding of the typical radiologic findings is useful in establishing the diagnosis and guiding the treatment. Nail-patella syndrome(이하 NPS)은 상염색체 우성으로 유전되는 드문 질환으로 손톱 형성이상(nail dysplasia), 슬개골 무형성 혹은 형성저하(patellar aplasia or hypoplasia), 장골 돌기(iliac horn), 주관절 형성이상 혹은 탈구(dysplasia or dislocation of the elbow)로 특징 지워진다. 저자들은 전형적인 NPS의 방사선학적 소견을 경험하여 보고하는 바이다. 흔하지는 않으나 전형적인 소견을 인지함으로써 정확한 조기 진단과 치료에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.
