A Note on the History of the Gambler's Ruin Problem

This paper deals with the history of one of the well-known and historically important problems in probability, "Gambler's ruin". This problem was first solved by Pascal and Fermat and published by Huygens in 1657. It was studied and extended by many probabilists in early years and thus, it became an important problem in probability history, introducing many new concepts. We would like to introduce the problem in detail to readers and share the ideas on how new problems are developed, relating to old problems.
Predicting Gross Box Office Revenue for Domestic Films

This paper predicts gross box office revenue for domestic films using the Korean film data from 2008-2011. We use three regression methods, Linear Regression, Random Forest and Gradient Boosting to predict the gross box office revenue. We only consider domestic films with a revenue size of at least KRW 500 million; relevant explanatory variables are chosen by data visualization and variable selection techniques. The key idea of analyzing this data is to construct the meaningful explanatory variables from the data sources available to the public. Some variables must be categorized to conduct more effective analysis and clustering methods are applied to achieve this task. We choose the best model based on performance in the test set and important explanatory variables are discussed.

A research project entitled "Discovery of Korean Indigenous Species" was launched in 2006, and has been carried on as a continuous project until now. The main purpose of this project is to find undiscovered species on the Korean peninsula and ultimately register these species in the "National List of Species of Korea". In this paper, we present 79 unrecorded species of the Korean metazoans. All species were obtained from the final reports of "Discovery of Korean Indigenous Species" which were performed during the first five years of the project, 2006 to 2010.
A compound Poisson risk model with variable premium rate

We consider a general compound Poisson risk model in which the premium rate is surplus dependent. We analyze the joint distribution of the surplus immediately before ruin, the deffcit at ruin and the time of ruin by solving the integro-differential equation for the Gerber-Shiu discounted penalty function.

<P>Abstract</P><P>We report 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci developed from the freshwater prawn <I>Palaemon paucidens</I>. Their genetic characteristics were assessed in 48 individuals selected from six Korean populations. The number of alleles ranged from two to 21, and the observed and expected heterozygosities were between 0.13 and 0.83, and 0.46 and 0.95, respectively. We examined the cross-specific amplification of each locus in three species of palaemonid prawn and one species of atyid prawn.</P>

<▼1><P>Rhodopsin has been used as a prototype system to investigate G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) internalization and endocytic sorting mechanisms. Failure of rhodopsin recycling upon light activation results in various degenerative retinal diseases. Accumulation of internalized rhodopsin in late endosomes and the impairment of its lysosomal degradation are associated with unregulated cell death that occurs in dystrophies. However, the molecular basis of rhodopsin accumulation remains elusive. We found that the novel <I>norpA<SUP>P24</SUP></I> suppressor, <I>diehard4</I>, is responsible for the inability of endo-lysosomal rhodopsin trafficking and retinal degeneration in <I>Drosophila</I> models of retinal dystrophies. We found that <I>diehard4</I> encodes <I>Osiris 21</I>. Loss of its function suppresses retinal degeneration in <I>norpA<SUP>P24</SUP></I>, <I>rdgC<SUP>306</SUP></I>, and <I>trp<SUP>1</SUP></I>, but not in <I>rdgB<SUP>2</SUP></I>, suggesting a common cause of photoreceptor death. In addition, the loss of <I>Osiris 21</I> function shifts the membrane balance between late endosomes and lysosomes as evidenced by smaller late endosomes and the proliferation of lysosomal compartments, thus facilitating the degradation of endocytosed rhodopsin. Our results demonstrate the existence of negative regulation in vesicular traffic between endosomes and lysosomes. We anticipate that the identification of additional components and an in-depth description of this specific molecular machinery will aid in therapeutic interventions of various retinal dystrophies and GPCR-related human diseases.</P></▼1><▼2><P><B>Author Summary</B></P><P>Malfunctioning of phototransduction is the major cause of human blindness. Without functional phototransduction, rhodopsin-1, the major visual pigment, is rapidly endocytosed and accumulated in late endosomes. Impaired lysosomal delivery of endocytosed rhodopsin and its degradation has been reported to trigger progressive and light-dependent retinal degeneration in <I>Drosophila</I> models. It is intriguing why endocytosed rhodopsin accumulates in late endosomes instead of being delivered to lysosomes for degradation. Is this attributable to a saturation of rhodopsin endocytosis, which impedes the delivery capacity of the cell? To investigate the underlying mechanisms of rhodopsin accumulation in late endosomes, we used a suppressor of phototransduction mutants, which was identified previously from our unbiased genetic screen. This suppressor, called <I>diehard4</I>, shifts the membrane balance between late endosomes and lysosomes, resulting in the facilitated degradation of endocytosed rhodopsin. Our results clearly demonstrate that a previously unknown mechanism of negative regulation is actively engaged in vesicular traffic between endosomes and lysosomes in fly photoreceptors. We showed that eliminating such blockage alone was enough to rescue retinal degeneration in phototransduction mutants. From these results, we anticipate that the identification of additional components and an in-depth description of this molecular machinery will aid in therapeutic interventions of various retinal dystrophies and neurodegenerative disorders.</P></▼2>
A two-stage service policy for an M/G/1 queueing system

We introduce the $P^M_{{\lambda},{\tau}}$ service policy, as a generalized two-stage service policy of the $P^M_{\lambda}$ policy of Bae et al. (2002) for an M/G/1 queueing system. By using the level crossing theory and solving the corresponding integral equations, we obtain the explicit expression for the stationary distribution of the workload in the system.
