Kalopanax septemlobus (Thunb.) Koidz., a deciduous tree, is distributed only in Northeast Asia such as Korean Peninsula, Japan, China and Russian Far East with only one species within one genus. The timber quality of K. septemlobus is very high and its stem bark has been used in traditional medicine. A number of chemical constituents like saponin, (a secondary metabolic product) have been identified from this species and it has been used not only for medicinal but for edible purpose, particularly from the young leaves. Although Kalopanax deserves so many good things in human life, there have been no previous complex joint ecological and genetical research reports between two countries. The objectives of the study were to understand the morphological variation, genetic diversity, site and growth characteristics of Kalopanax septemlobus growing in Korea. The morphometric analysis supported that no stron discontinuities of leaf characters exist among infraspecific taxa of Kalopanax. Morphological variation for all characters was continuous with a high degree of overlap across taxa. Especially this continuum was reflected in general leaf lobe and leaf pubescence as defined by the infraspecific taxa. The entities of Kalopanax septemlobus maintained a certain degree of morphological continuity and were not sufficiently differentiated to warrant the designation of the rank of subspecies or varieties. Genetic diversity at 24 loci encoding enzymes was studied : seven populations of K. septemlobus in Korea. Levels of genetic diversity were low within populations, whereas the level of genetic diversity among populations was high (G_ST=0.627). The prevalent deficiency of heterozygosity revealed that K. septemlobus had severe inbreeding. Of particular interest was the recognition that natural populations represented more genotypic diversity under the undisturbed mixed forests. The site characteristics of Kalopanax in Gangwon Province were in ridge and slope areas, high elevation, northern aspect and fertile soil. The major species associated with K. septemlobus were Quercus mongolica and Acer pseudosienboldianum in ridge area and Tilia amurensis and Betula schmidtii in slope. The DBH growth of mature K. septemlobus as dominant tree of valley area and suppressed one of ridge area were 5∼8㎜/yr and 1㎜/yr, respectively. The survival rate of naturally regenerated Kalopanax seedlings at planted Pinus koraiensis was 65% for two years and 96% for one year. The growth rates of height and root-collar diameter in K. septemlobus seedlings for one year were 71% and 19%, respectively.

This study was carried out to compare sprouting and sprout growth after the stumps of four Quercus spesies (Q. mongolica, Q. variabilis, Q. actuissima and Q. dentata) were cut at 20cm from the soil surface in 1996 and 2000 at Mt. Taehwa, Kwangju-Gun, Kyonggi-Do, Korea. The results obtained were as follows: (1) Q. mongolica showed most vigorous sprouting and followed by Q. variabilis, Q. dentate, and Q. acutissima. (2) The sprouting ability was more vigorous when cut in winter to early spring than that in summer. (3) The initial diameter growth of the sprouts for 2 years after cutting was the highest in Q. acutissima and followed by Q. dentata, Q. mongolica and Q. varivabilis, but the growth for 5 years after cutting was Q. variabilis > Q. mongolica > Q. dentate > Q. acutissima (4) The height growth of sprouts for 2 years after cutting was the highest in Q. acutissima and followed by Q. mongolica, Q. dentata and Q. variabilis, but the growth for 5 years after cutting was Q. variabilis > Q. mongolica > Q. dentata > Q. acutissima. (5) Tending is needed if the stands of Q. variabilis and Q. acutissima are regenerated successfully by sprouting. (6) The sprouting ability of Quercus species decreased with increasing stump diameter, while its diameter growth seemed to increase.
