리모주 산악지대의 무장투쟁대원들은 산악지역을 저항운동의 거점으로 삼았다. 그들에게 산악지역은 일시적 체류지이면서 동시에 도피처이자 저항의 장소였다. 기득권 세력에 투쟁하는 산악에서의 투쟁은 비주류의 삶이었기에, 지방 주민들의 지원, 동료에 대한 신뢰와 이타심 없이는 불가능했다. 이들이 산악투쟁을 하면서 서로 연대하고 타인과 공존하는 주체적 삶을 살려고 노력했다. 반면 산악지역은 이들에게 생존공간을 제공하고, 재충전할 수 있는 시간과 장소를 부여했다. 롱고마이 공동체 구성원들은 산악을 일시적 체류 장소로서가 아니라 영구적인 정착의 장소로 선택했다. 그들은 자본주의 사회와는 다른 삶이 가능하다는 것을 보여 주겠다는 희망을 가지고 입산했지만 산악이 주는 한계와 외부세계와의 완전한 단절로 초기에는 많은 어려움을 겪어야 했다. 하지만 이들은 공동체 구성원들간의 유대를 바탕으로 철저히 산악에만 의존한 채 산악이 제공하는 것만 수용했고 산악의 리듬, 즉 자연과 일치하는 삶을 살아가려는 노력을 했다. 롱고마이 공동체는 시간이 지나면서 새로운 방안을 모색하여 문제점들을 훌륭히 극복할 수 있었다. 이들은 산악지역과 조화로운 삶을 지속했고 농업위주의 삶과 유대가 깊은 조합공동체 조직을 통해 위기를 극복할 수 있었다. 외부 세계에 흡수되거나 산악지역의 삶만이 옳다는 주장을 하는 대신 라디오방송국을 통해 외부 세계와 소통하고 자신들의 삶을 바깥 세상에 점차 전파하려는 시도를 했다. 뿐만 아니라 신자유주의로 고통 받는 이주민이나 피난민 등을 돕는 국제구호활동을 병행하고 있다. 공동체내에서 다국어로 소통하고 폐쇄적인 민족국가의 이기주의에서 해방된 이들이야말로 ‘유럽연합정신에 적합한 이상적인 시민들’이라는 평가를 받기도 한다. 산악무장단체와 롱고마이 공동체는 체제를 부정하고 산악지역으로 입산했다는 점에서는 동일하지만, 산악무장 대원들이 산을 투쟁하기 위한 임시 거처로 사용한 반면, 롱고마이 공동체 조합원들이 영구 정착을 위해 산악지역을 선택했다는 점에서는 차이를 볼 수 있다. 산악무장대원들은 저항의 공간인 산악에서 무장투쟁을 하다가 조국 해방을 맞이하면서 자신들의 선택이 옳았음을 확신했다. 또 다른 방식으로 살아가기 위해 산악으로 들어가 농업에만 의존하면서 시장경제와 자본주의에 의존하지 않는 대안적인 삶이 가능하다는 것을 증명한 공동체 조합원들은 투쟁에서 절반의 성공을 거두었고 그것을 가능하게 한 산악에 무한한 신뢰를 지나게 되었다. 산악무장투쟁 체험과 롱고마이 공동체의 삶을 통해 우리는 산악지역이 때로는 피난지로서 때로는 대안사회의 존재 가능성을 증명하는 공간으로 작동하는 것을 보았다. 산악에서 저항하고 산악에 깊이 의존하고 산악을 신뢰하는 이들의 체험은 현재 프랑스 사회에서도 여전히 지속되고 있음을 목격할 수 있다. 최근 프랑스 중부에 위치한 라르작 고원(Plateau Larzac)에서 농민들과 시민단체 회원들이 반전운동, 평화운동과 생태운동을 전개하고 있다. 산악지역에서 가능했던 투쟁과 대안적 삶을 목격하면서 이들은 산악에서 자신들에게 필요한 활력과 투쟁목적을 퍼오고 있다. 현대 자본주의 사회에서 산악지역은 여가와 건강으로 조명을 받고 있지만, 이와는 전적으로 다른 무한한 가능성을 사람들에게 여전히 제공하고 있는 것이다. The Maquisards made Montagnes limougines a base for their resistance movement. The mountain area served them as not merely a temporary place of residence but also a refuge and a place of resistance (lieux de résistance). It would have been impossible, without the support from the local community along with trust and altruism between the comrades, to keep up the movement, given that the Maquisards revolted against the established authority and thus remained outside of the social mainstream. While continuing the struggles in the mountains, the members tried to join forces in solidarity and lead a self-reliant life in the sense of community. The mountains at the same time provided a shelter allowing them to be replenished. The associates of Coopérative Longo Maï, unlike the Maquisards, chose the mountains as a permanent, not temporary, settlement. They came at first in the hopes of showing that an alternative society could be built on a system entirely different from capitalism, but had to go through a host of difficulties coming from geographic restrictions and insulation from the outside world. Despite the hardships, they did not accept anything but what the mountains offered, conforming to the rhythms and laws of their home, the nature. The Coopérative Longo Maï members made notable successes in overcoming the problems, as a result of their efforts that continued evolving to meet new challenges. For instance, they maintained harmony with the conditions of the mountain area and organized co-operatives, or unions, that had close links with the agriculture-oriented life. They also tried to communicate with the outside over the radio, informing the public of what their mountain life is like, rather than assimilating into the outside or becoming self-righteous about the virtues of the way they lived. In addition, they undertook international relief activities in favor of refugees or immigrants who suffered from the negative effects of neoliberalism. Those who use multiple languages in a community and detach themselves from clannish nationalism are often considered as ideal citizens of the European Union. The Maquisards and the Coopérative Longo Maï associates entered the mountains for the same purpose: waging an anti-establishment campaign. The two groups, however, had different views of the mountains; the former chose them as a temporary hideout for the movement; the latter as a permanent settlement. Witnessing the liberation of their homeland during the armed struggles in the mountains, the Maquisards became convinced that their decision was right. The Coopérative Longo Maï members, who vindicated the idea of building an alternative society depending solely on agriculture, not on market economy and capitalism, to be possible, succeeded in more than half of what they tried to achieve, therefore developing absolute trust in the mountains, which made it all happen. From the lives and experiences of the two groups, we have learned that the mountains served sometimes as a refuge and sometimes as a place proving the possibility of an alternative society. We can also learn that these experiences did not simply end up in a French history book but still remain valid up to the present. Recently in Plateau Larzac, located in central France, farmers together with NGOs are waging anti-war, peace, and environmental movements. They are drawing from the mountains the vitality and justification they need for successful campaigns, inspired by how the Maquisards and Coopérative Longo Maï achieved there. Although the mountains are generally viewed in modern capitalist societies as a place for leisure activities and health care, they still provide infinite potentials and possibilities totally different from the recreational use.
