Vol.121 No.-

This paper is the first one to study the guest book of the Pansori Appreciation Meeting in 1973, which is owned by the Korean Classical Music Record Museum, and the data is hereby published for the first time. This material is the oldest among the guestbooks for pansori performances that have been confirmed so far. The Pansori Appreciation Meeting in 1973 was an important event that became the basis of the Deep-rooted Tree Pansori Appreciation Meeting, which marked a major milestone in modern and contemporary pansori performances and this guestbook is the only original record of the event that has been confirmed so far, as no videos, recordings, or photos of the meeting have been found yet. Analyzing a total of 17 people with personal handwriting in this guestbook, many attendees were born between 1920 and 1923, and many included scholars, professors, graduates of Seoul National University, and independence activists. Especially it seems that the professors of the Seoul National University led this appreciation meeting. Some of the figures are related to Yeonhee College and Yonsei University, but the person who is deeply related to Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and the Korean Language and Literature Society is Byungwook Jung and most of the people in this guestbook are close friends with him and seem to have attended by his invitation. In the academic world, it has been erroneously known that the pansori appreciation event was held in the fall of 1973 at the Christian Broadcasting Station concert hall. In this paper, however, we studied the guest book of this appreciation meeting and found related records by Kyunglin Sung, revealing that this event was held in the small auditorium of Christian Broadcasting Station on April 4, 1973, in the auditorium of the Station on May 12, and in the concert hall of the Station in the fall. A list of famous singers was also partially proved for the first time. Since the master singers who appeared in the 2nd Pansori Appreciation in 1973 were Rokju Park and Bongsul Park, it seems that masters of a similar level appeared in the 1st and 3rd Pansori Appreciation and judging from the case of the 2nd appreciation meeting, it is thought that two master singers performed each time. The characteristics of the 1973 Pansori Appreciation Meeting and the corresponding guestbook are that, judging from the participants who signed the performance, there are traces of this performance being held with not only the musicology of Pansori, but also related studies such as Korean literature and philosophy in mind. Efforts are also made to solidify the connection with various studies related to pansori and to establish a foundation for support and cooperation so that the meeting can continue to develop, centering on scholars who are friendly with Byungwook Jung. The guestbook of the Pansori Appreciation Meeting in 1973 is also a valuable resource in that it provides insight into aspects unknown to the academic world, such as scholars, independence activists, politicians, and public officials who left their signatures. In this paper, the personal information of the signatories of the guest book, the performers, and the assigned tasks of those who led the viewing event were classified and organized to enhance understanding. In addition, by researching this guestbook, it was revealed that the appreciation meeting had a great influence on pansori performances and record planning at the national and private level, such as the Pansori Appreciation Meeting from 1974 to 1978 and the National Theater Pansori Series that began in 1984. Through the above, although the Pansori Appreciation Meeting in 1973 played an important historical role, it becomes possible only now to know its main part that has been completely forgotten due to the lack of relevant data in the academic world.

Correlation between tumor volume response to radiotherapy and expression of biological markers in patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma

2009 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.20 No.4

Objective: To determine the factors associated with tumor volume response to radiotherapy (RT) in cervical cancer patients, and the relationship between the tumor volume response and alteration of the expression of biological markers during RT. Methods: Twenty consecutive patients with cervical squamous cell carcinoma who received definitive RT were enrolled. Tumor volumes were calculated by MRI examinations performed at the start of RT (pre-RT), at the fourth week of RT (mid-RT), and 1 month after RT completion (post-RT). Two serial punch biopsies were performed at preand mid-RT, and immunohistochemical staining was performed for cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Results: For the pre-RT evaluation, fourteen (70%) and eleven (55%) patients showed positive immunoreactivity for COX-2 and EGFR, respectively. Among the seven patients whose median percentage residual tumor at mid-RT (V2R) was greater than 0.5, seven (100%, p=0.0515) and five (71.4%, p=0.3742) patients showed positive immunoreactivity for COX-2 and EGFR, respectively. The logistic regression analysis showed that positive immunoreactivity for both COX-2 and EGFR at pre-RT were associated with V2R (p=0.0782). For the mid-RT evaluation, eight cases showed an interval increase in the distribution of immunoreactivity for COX-2, and six out of the eight patients had a V2R greater than 0.5 (p=0.2222). Conclusion: The poor mid-RT tumor response was associated with the coexpression of COX-2 and EGFR. A Comparison of Clinical Outcomes for Breast-conserving Treatment and Mastectomy for Early Breast Cancer

2008 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.26 No.1

Purpose: To compare the treatment outcomes and to analyze prognostic factors between the use of a breast-conserving treatment (BCT) and a mastectomy for early stage breast cancer. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1,200 patients with pathological stage T1-2N0 breast cancer who received surgery between September 1994 and December 2002 at Samsung Medical Center. We compared the patient characteristics and treatment outcomes between the two treatment groups. Results: Among the 1,174 eligible patients, 601 (51.2%) patients received a BCT and the remaining 573 (48.8%) patients received a mastectomy. The mastectomy group of patients had significantly more cases with a larger tumor size, multicentricity, extensive intraductal component, and estrogen- and progesterone- receptor negativity. The ten-year overall survival rates (OS) of the BCT and mastectomy groups were 91.96% and 91.01%, respectively (p=0.1274). The ten-year disease-free survival rates (DFS) were 80.48% for the BCT group of patients and 84.95% for the mastectomy group of patients, respectively (p=0.8795). Conclusion: Our study shows some differences in patient characteristics between the two treatment groups. However, these differences did not result in significant survival differences.

In vivo verification of regional hyperthermia in the liver

2014 Radiation Oncology Journal Vol.32 No.4

We performed invasive thermometry to verify the elevation of local temperature in the liver during hyperthermia. Materials and Methods: Three 40-kg pigs were used for the experiments. Under general anesthesia with ultrasonography guidance, two glass fiber-optic sensors were placed in the liver, and one was placed in the peritoneal cavity in front of the liver. Another sensor was placed on the skin surface to assess superficial cooling. Six sessions of hyperthermia were delivered using the Celsius TCS electro-hyperthermia system. The energy delivered was increased from 240 kJ to 507 kJ during the 60-minute sessions. The inter-session cooling periods were at least 30 minutes. The temperature was recorded every 5 minutes by the four sensors during hyperthermia, and the increased temperatures recorded during the consecutive sessions were analyzed. Results: As the animals were anesthetized, the baseline temperature at the start of each session decreased by 1.3oC to 2.8oC (median, 2.1oC). The mean increases in temperature measured by the intrahepatic sensors were 2.42oC (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.70–3.13) and 2.67oC (95% CI, 2.05–3.28) during the fifth and sixth sessions, respectively. The corresponding values for the intraperitoneal sensor were 2.10oC (95% CI, 0.71–3.49) and 2.87oC (1.13–4.43), respectively. Conversely, the skin temperature was not increased but rather decreased according to application of the cooling system. Conclusion: We observed mean 2.67oC and 2.87oC increases in temperature at the liver and peritoneal cavity, respectively, during hyperthermia. In vivo real-time thermometry is useful for directly measuring internal temperature during hyperthermia.
