To utilize the leaves of broccoli, the shape of which was similar with that of kale leaves, as a vegetable juice, the extracts from two types of vegetable leaves were subjected to the analyses of proximate components, volatile sulfur compounds, vitamin C and minerals. The sensory evaluation of the juices, prepared from kale and broccoli leaves, were performed by duo-trio test and scoring test. Among eight varieties of broccoli, four varieties('Pilgrim', 'Greenbelt', 'Salinas' and 'Shasta')were not significantly different from kale(p<0.05), based on the duo-trio sensory test. Sulfur and nitrogen compounds present in the dichloromethane extracts of kale and broccoli leaves 'Pilgrim' were identified as 3-butenyl, allyl, butyl and 4-methylsulfinylbutyl isothiocyanate(sulforaphane), 4,5-epithiovalero, 4,5-epithio-3-hydroxyvalero, benzenepropane, 3-hydroxy-4-propene, 4-methylthio butane, 3-hydroxy-3-phenylpropane, 5-methyIsulfinylpentane, 4-methoxyphenyl-3-hydroxypropane nitrile and dimethyl trisulfide by GC/MSD analysis. Proximate components were observed to be relatively similar between kale and broccoli leaves. Vitamin C and sugar content were higher in broccoli leaves(125~180㎎% and 8~12˚Brix) than in kale(101㎎% and 7˚Brix). In mineral analysis by AA and ICP-Mass, 'Pilgrim' showed a higher content of K, Fe, Mn, Zn and Se. In separate experiment, sensory scores of bitter taste and astringent taste were lower and scores of over-all taste and over-all acceptability, higher in broccoli ('1243') juice than those in kale juice.

Experiments were conducted to study the reations of several tropical inbred lines to all isolated TuMV strains, to evaluate the resistance to the TuMV strain C-5 in resistant and susceptible parental stacks and their Fl's, and to elucidate the mode of inheritance of resistance to the TuMV strain C-5. The progenies of B73O showed different levels of resistance to TuMV strain C-5 ; highly resistant resistant and moderately resistant Resistance to TuMV strain C-5 was partially dominant The results obtained from visual rating and from ELISA test showed same patterns for C-1 and C-2 strains, but in C-3 strain there were differences between visual rating and ELISA test.

Experiments were conducted to study the applicability of in vitro pollination technique combined with aniline blue staining and observation under fluorscence microscope in detecting serf-in-compatibility in Chinese cabbage, Brassica campestris ssp. pekinensis. This experiment also aimed to select the stable self-incompatible plants from inbred lines these incompatibility reaction had not been previously studied. A summary of the results are as follows. 1. Self-incompatible lines, E-7 and B-8, showed few or no normally growing pollen tubes in both selfing and sibmatings without exception, while all interline pollinations showed a lot of pollen tubes growing in the style. 2. In a wide range of flower age, most selfings and sibmatings of the self-compatible N-4 revealed a lot of pollen tubes penetrating into the style although about 10% discrepant cases were observed. 3. Eighteen inbred plants could be classified into three groups based on the observed number of pollen tubes; stable self-incompatible, intermediate, and self-compatible ones. A group of 5 plants with stable self-incompatible behavior were selected as the source of self-incompatible lines for use in the hybrid breeding program.
