        Effects of Ginsenoside-Rg1 on Post-thawed Miniature Pig Sperm Motility, Mitochondria Activity, and Membrane Integrity

        In this study, we used flow a cytometric assay to evaluate plasma membrane integrity and mitochondrial activity in post-thawed sperm that was supplemented with ginsenoside-Rg1. Varying concentrations of ginsenoside-Rg1 (0, 25, 50 and 100 μM/ml) were used in the extender during cryopreservation to protect the DNA of thawed sperm, thereby increasing the viability and motility rate as evaluated using a computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) method. The results derived from CASA were used to compare the fresh, control, and ginsenoside-Rg1 groups. Sperm motility and the number of progressively motile sperm were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the 50 μM/ml ginsenoside-Rg1 group (61.0±4.65%) than in the control (46.6±7.02%), 25 μM/ml (46.2±4.76%), and 100 μM/ml ginsenoside-Rg1 (52.0± 1.90%) groups. However, the velocity distribution of post-thawed sperm did not differ significantly. Membrane integrity and MMP staining as revealed using flow cytometry were significantly (p<0.05) higher (91.6±0.82%) in the 50 μM/ml ginsenoside-Rg1 group than in the other groups. Here, we report that ginsenoside-Rg1 affects the motility and viability of boar spermatozoa. Moreover, ginsenoside- Rg1 can be used as a protective additive for the suppression of intracellular mitochondrial oxidative stress caused by cryopreservation

        스마트 그리드를 위한 확장 홈 네트워크 기반의 AMI 시스템 설계

        A smart grid is the next generation power grid which combines the existing power grid with information technology, so an energy efficient power grid can be provided. In this paper, in order to build an efficient smart grid an AMI system, which gears with the existing home network and provides an user friendly management function, is proposed. The proposed AMI system, which is based on an extended home network, consists of various functional units; smart meters, communication modules, home gateway, security modules, meter data management modules (MDMM), electric power application modules and so on. The proposed home network system, which can reduce electric power consumption and transmit data more effectively, is designed by using IEEE 802.15.4. The extended home gateway can exchange energy consumption information with the outside management system via web services. The proposed AMI system is designed to enable two-way communication between the home gateway and MDMM via the Internet. The AES(Advanced Encryption Standard) algorithm, which is a symmetric block cipher algorithm, is used to ensure secure information exchange. Even though the results in this study could be limited to our experimental environment, the result of the simulation test shows that the proposed system reduces electric power consumption by 4~42% on average compared to the case of using no control. 스마트 그리드란 기존의 전력망에 정보기술을 융합하여 에너지 효율을 최적화하는 차세대 전력망을 구성하는 기술의 하나이다. 본 논문에서는 스마트그리드를 효과적으로 구축하기 위하여 기존 홈 네트워크와 연동되고 효율적인 관리 기능을 제공하는 AMI 시스템을 제안 한다. 확장된 홈 네트워크 기반의 AMI 시스템은 스마트미터, 통신 모듈, 홈 게이트웨이, 보안 모듈, 미터 데이터 관리 시스템, 전력 응용 모듈 등으로 구성된다. 제안하는 홈 네트워크는 전력소모를 줄이고 효율적인 데이터 전송이 가능할 수 있도록 IEEE 802.15.4를 기반으로 설계하였다. 제안 홈 게이트웨이는 웹 서비스를 통해 외부 관리 시스템과 에너지 소비 정보 등을 실시간으로 교환할 수 있고, AMI 시스템은 인터넷을 통하여 홈 게이트웨이와 미터 데이터 관리 시스템 간의 양방향 통신이 가능하도록 설계되었다. 정보 전달의 안전성을 얻기 위하여 보안 알고리즘을 적용 하였으며 보안 알고리즘은 대칭적 블록 암호화 방식인 AES 알고리즘을 사용하였다. 제안 시스템을 사용하는 경우 본 연구에 제한적이기는 하지만 제어를 하지 않을 경우보다 전력 소비가 평균적으로 4~42%정도 줄어드는 것을 실험 결과에서 확인할 수 있었다.

        Cytotoxicity and Structure-activity Relationships of Naphthyridine Derivatives in Human Cervical Cancer, Leukemia, and Prostate Cancer

        Naphthyridine compounds are important, because they exhibit various biological activities including anticancer, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory activity. Some naphthyridines have antimitotic effects or demonstrate anticancer activity by inhibiting topoisomerase II. These compounds have been investigated as potential anticancer agents, and several compounds are now part of clinical trials. A series of naphthyridine derivatives were evaluated for their in vitro cytotoxic activities against human cervical cancer (HeLa), leukemia (HL-60), and prostate cancer (PC-3) cell lines using an MTT assay. Some compounds (14, 15, and 16) were more potent than colchicine against all three human cancer cell lines and compound (16) demonstrated potency with IC50 values of 0.7, 0.1, and 5.1 μM,respectively. Comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) were used for quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) molecular modeling of these compounds. We obtained accurate and predictive three-dimensional QSAR (3D-QSAR) models as indicated by the high PLS parameters of the HeLa (q2, 0.857; r2, 0.984; r2pred,0.966), HL-60 (q2, 0.777; r2, 0.937; r2pred, 0.913), and PC-3 (q2, 0.702; r2, 0.983; r2pred, 0.974) cell lines. The 3D-QSAR contour maps suggested that the C-1 NH and C-4 carbonyl group of the naphthyridine ring and the C-2 naphthyl ring were important for cytotoxicity in all three human cancer cell lines.

        Emotion Regulation Strategies as Moderators between Counterfactual Thinking Concerning Intimate Partner Violence and Trauma-related Emotions: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study

        According to the cognitive model of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), negative appraisals and negative emotions are key factors in PTSD symptoms. Moreover, emotion regulation strategies (ERS) may affect the severity of PTSD symptom differently. This study investigated the reported types and frequency of intimate partner violence (IPV) survivors, and the effects of counterfactual thinking (CFT) and ERS on trauma-related emotions in daily life via ecological momentary assessment (EMA). Data from 59 women who experienced IPV within the past year were analyzed. The results demonstrated that cognitive reappraisal may modulate the relationship between upward CFT and trauma-related emotions (B= -0.012, p= .005), but the effect of emotion suppression was not statistically significant (B= -0.006, p= .365). Especially, upward CFT may demonstrate a greater impact on trauma-related emotions in individuals who use a lower degree of cognitive reappraisal in daily life than in participants employing a higher degree. Conversely, although downward CFT also increased trauma-related emotions, neither type of ERS moderated this relationship (cognitive reappraisal: B= -0.069, p= .129; emotion suppression: B= -0.004, p= .947). These findings extend prior research on the effectiveness of cognitive reappraisal by reinforcing its ecological validity and emphasize the need for further investigations.

      • Effect of CH<sub>4</sub> gas environment on aromatic content of bio-oils in catalytic pyrolysis of biomass

        Bio-oils is mainly composed of oxygenated compounds. To overcome these issues, bio-oil has to be upgraded by hydrodeoxygenation of bio-oil, but this process not yet been commercialized. This paper is to utilize CH<sub>4</sub> as a source of the hydrogen for the conversion of oxygenated compounds present in the bio-oil to aromatic rich fuel. It is expecting that the bio-oil produced in the pyrolysis of yellow poplar in presence CH<sub>4</sub> might selectively produces alkyl phenols. ** This work was also supported by the C1 Gas Refinery Program through the National Research Foundation of Korea(NRF) funded by the Ministry of Science and ICT(2015M3D3A1A01064899).

        Effect of Apoptosis Induction of Ailanthus altissima on Human Lung Carcinoma Cells

        We investigated the inhibitory effects of solvent extracts from Ailanthus altissima in A549 human lung cancer cell. A. altissima has been recognized as a traditional healthy food due to its various biological activities against hypertension, strokes, fever, pain, neuralgia, inflammation, and cancer effects. Recently, it has been reported that the extracts of various wild vegetables show strong anti-cancer properties by induction of apoptosis. However, the mechanisms of their cytotoxicity in human lung cancer cells have been poorly understood. The present study was investigated the effects of solvent extracts from A. altissima on cell growth and apoptosis on A549 human lung cancer cells. A treatment of A. altissima inhibited the growth of A549 cells in a dose-dependent manner by inducing apoptosis. Especially, the chloroform fraction showed the highest anti-cancer effect among five kinds of fractions. And also, induction of apoptosis by chloroform fraction were associated with down-regulation of Bcl-2, and up-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax expression. From these results, A. altissima may have a therapeutic potential in human lung cancer cells and as a functional food.

      • 벤치 규모 고정층 반응기를 이용한 다양한 리그닌의 열분해 공정 최적화

        현대 사회의 지구 온난화 문제를 해결하기 위해 제시된 다양한 방법 중 하나는 대체 에너지원의 개발이다. 화석연료를 대체할 수 있는 에너지원으로 주목 받고 있는 lignocellulosic biomass는 열화학적 전환 공정 중 열분해를 통해 대체 연료인 바이오 오일을 생산할 수 있다. Lignocellulosic biomass를 구성하는 요소 중 하나인 리그닌은 구조적 특징에 의한 낮은 반응성과 열분해 시 agglomeration 현상 때문에 연구가 많이 진행되지 않고 있다. 본 연구에서는 리그닌 열분해를 통해 효과적으로 고부가가치 물질을 추출하기 위해 다양한 방식으로 만들어진 리그닌들을 사용하여 다양한 조건들로 실험하여 벤치 규모 고정층 반응기에서 최적의 열분해 조건을 찾는 연구를 진행하였다. <sup>**</sup> 이 성과는 2017년도 정부(과학기술통신부)의 재원으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 연구임(No. 2017M1A2A2087674).

        고선량의 감마선과 전자선이 조사된 cotton linter 종이의 물리적 특성 변화 비교

        The effects of gamma ray and electron beam irradiation on paper disinfection were eval- uated. The paper was irradiated with 10-100 kGy gamma rays and electron beams which were higher than the recommended dose for paper disinfection. After irradiation, the mechanical properties and color of the paper and the cellulose chain scission rate were evaluated. In the case of paper strength, it decreased after 25 kGy irradiation, whereas the discoloration of paper appeared after 10 kGy irradiation. It cannot confirm the effect on paper only with changes in mechanical strength and color in the recommended range of 0.5-10 kGy for actual paper disinfection treatment. On the other hand, even with 10 kGy irradiation, the degree of polymerization of cellulose paper was reduced by ~50%. Cotton linter paper with a degree of polymerization of about 2,000 was predicted to decrease by about 7% after being irradiated with a 1 kGy gamma ray and electron beam. To evaluate the irradiation effect on paper, it is therefore more reasonable to evaluate the degree of polymerization rather than the strength and color of the paper. .
