Mitochondrial Dynamics in the Heart as a Novel Therapeutic Target for Cardioprotection

Traditionally, mitochondria have been regarded solely as energy generators for cells;however, accumulating data have demonstrated that these complex organelles play a variety of roles within the cardiomyocyte that extend beyond this classic function. Mitochondrial dynamics involves mitochondrial movements and morphologic alterations by tethering, fusion, and fission, which depend on cellular energy requirements and metabolic status. Many studies have indicated that mitochondrial dynamics may be a fundamental component of the maintenance of normal cellular homeostasis and cardiac function. Mitochondrial dynamics is controlled by the protein machinery responsible for mitochondrial fusion and fission, but cardiomyocytes are densely packed as part of an intricate cytoarchitecture for efficient and imbalanced contraction; thus,mitochondrial dynamics in the adult heart are restricted and occur more slowly than in other organs. Cardiac mitochondrial dynamics is important for cardiac physiology in diseased conditions such as ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. Changes in mitochondrial morphology through modulation of the expression of proteins regulating mitochondrial dynamics demonstrates the beneficial effects on cardiac performance after IR injury. Thus, accurately defining the roles of mitochondrial dynamics in the adult heart can guide the identification and development of novel therapeutic targets for cardioprotection. Further studies should be performed to establish the exact mechanisms of mitochondrial dynamics.

Purpose: The present study was aimed to assess the feasibility of using decellularized aortic allograft in a rat small animal surgical model for conducting small diameter vascular tissue engineering research. Materials and Methods: Decellularized aortic allografts were infra-renally implanted in 12 Sprague-Dawley (SD) adult rats. The conduits were harvested at 2 (n = 6) and 8 weeks (n = 6), and assessed by hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), van Gieson, Masson Trichrome staining, and immunohistochemistry for von Willebrand factor, CD 31^+, and actin. Results: Consistent, predictable, and reproducible results were produced by means of a standardized surgical procedure. All animals survived without major complications. Inflammatory immune reaction was minimal, and there was no evidence of aneurysmal degeneration or rupture of the decellularized vascular implants. However, the aortic wall appeared thinner and the elastic fibers in the medial layer showed decreased undulation compared to the normal aorta. There was also minimal cellular repopulation of the vascular media. The remodeling appeared progressive from 2 to 8 weeks with increased intimal thickening and accumulation of both collagen and cells staining for actin. Although the endothelial like cells appeared largely confluent at 8 weeks, they were not as concentrated in appearance as in the normal aorta. Conclusion: The results showed the present rat animal model using decellularized vascular allograft implants to be a potentially durable and effective experimental platform for conducting further research on small diameter vascular tissue engineering.

Recently, as electric vehicles and hybrid vehicles are widely used, the use of rechargeable batteries is increasing. Electric and hybrid cars are made up of hundreds to thousands of electric cells depending on the car model. And the assembly process of the cells and modules requires a variety of bonding process. Meanwhile, in order to connect several cells in series, Cu used as a cathode and Al of an anode must be bonded. In this paper, the characteristics of Al and Cu metals, laser types, characteristics and principles of welding lasers for welding of Cu and Al electrodes are introduced.
각종 동물 간소엽내 Disse강의 소세포에 관한 미세구조적 비교 연구

This study was an attempt to investigate and compare the fine structure of small cells in the space of Disse of various animal livers. All animal livers contained small cells with or without lipid droplets and the one with lipid droplet seemed to be more developed and show an abundance of activity in function. The fine structure of the small cells observed in the nonmammals was similar to that of Ito cell in the mammal. The electron density of the small cells was similar to that of other cell types in the same animal liver. The cisternal dilation of rough endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus was more predominant in the mammalian Ito cells. In the nonmammalian, aquatic vertebrates, however, lysosomes and filaments are much more abundant in the Ito cell and its abundant cytoplasmic processes rich in filaments were usually extended between the parenchymal cells. The disparity in size of organelles and numbers of lipid droplets in the small cells showed a tendency similar to those of other cell types in the same animal. From these results, it is considered that the small cells in the space of Disse is a Ito cell and the Ito cell without lipid droplets differentiates into the one containing lipid droplets according to the characteristics of the different animals respectively, and that the Ito cells in the mammals are more active in metabolic function, while those in the nonmammalian aquatic vertebrates are abundant in support of parenchyme.
공급 사슬 환경에서 중소 제조 기업의 가격 결정 전략에 관한 연구

본 논문은 공급 사슬 환경에서 중간 부품을 제조하여 기업을 대상으로 판매하는 중소 제조 기업의 가격 결정 전략에 대하여 연구하였다. 특히 국내에서 자동차 부품을 제조하는 중소 기업들이 고객사에게 중간 부품을 생산하여 납품하면, 고객사가 다시 이 부품을 활용하여 그 다음 단계의 부품을 생산하여 완성차 제조업체에 납품하는 공급 사슬 환경을 고려하였다. 중소 제조 기업이 생산한 부품의 완성차 탑재 여부는 완성차를 생산하는 대기업과 협상하고, 납품 가격은 해당 부품을 구매하는 고객사와의 협상에 의해 결정된다. 본 논문은 이와 같은 환경에서 중소 제조 기업이 최적의 가격 결정을 위하여 취할 수 있는 전략 수립을 연구하였다.
Effects of age and gender on spatial orientation of human corpus callosum in healthy Koreans

The changes in the corpus callosum (CC) with age and gender remain largely subject to dispute, which might come from the different strategies for analyzing the size and shape of CC. We have investigated this issue by measuring some variables reflecting the spatial orientation of CC on magnetic resonance imaging in Koreans, which minimize individual variances in the brain. The subjects were composed of young adults in their twenties (51 male, 59 female)and elderly adults in their sixties and seventies (60 male, 71 female). The total area of CC, length and height of CC,the central angle and the four angles suggested by Oka et al. were measured. The whole area and the central angle of CC were not significantly affected by age and gender. The height and length of CC were significantly greater in elderly people. The angle connecting genu, upper notch of pons and splenium was significantly larger in the elderly group. Furthermore, all four angles were significantly different between male and female subjects. These results confirm that the spatial orientation of CC is influenced by age and gender.
