Relations between handshape and orientation in simultaneous compounds in Korean Sign Language
Vol.40 No.1
The purpose of this paper is to examine the status of orientation relative to handshape in sign phonology. There have been two competing views on the status of orientation: one in which orientation is taken to be a subcategory of handshape, and the other in which orientation is taken to have an equal status with handshape. We assess the predictions made by the competing views involving the possibilities of total assimilation of handshape and orientation, partial assimilation of orientation, and partial assimilation of handshape, through the analyses of simultaneous compounds in Korean Sign Language (KSL). It is shown in the paper that simultaneous compounds in KSL can be analyzed to involve not only total assimilation and partial assimilation of orientation but also partial assimilation of handshape, which is possible only under the view that orientation is independent of handshape. Based on the discussion, we conclude that orientation and handshape are parallel categories that distinguish meaning in the phonology of sign language.

This paper aims to answer the question whether there is any difference in learning allomorphs of a morpho-phonological pattern which differ in the likelihood of phonological processes. Broadly, there are two views on how the allomorphs are represented in the mental lexicon. The PHONOLOGY (P) view prioritizes the phonological analysis of the allomorphs and posits a single underlying representation whereas the MORPHEME LISTING (ML) view memorizes all the allomorphs and lists multiple representations. To investigate the question, artificial grammar learning experiments were conducted which compared how well learners could learn allomorphy patterns that were more or less amenable to a phonological analysis under the P view. The P view predicts that there will be a difference in learning the allomorphs, whereas the ML view predicts that there will be no difference in learning because listing the morphemes are the same in each grammar. The results of the series of experiments conducted consistently reject the view that speakers just memorize which allomorphs are used in which phonological environments. A more careful examination of the results points to a more complex interplay between phonological and morphological learning.
Computational complexity and learnability of two vowel harmony patterns with neutral vowels
Vol.26 No.1
This paper investigates the relationship between the complexity of a phonological pattern and its learnability. The Complexity Hypothesis refers to the idea that less complex patterns are easier to learn than more complex patterns. In this paper, the hypothesis is tested as the Subregular Hypothesis, which measures computational complexity in terms of the Subregular Hierarchy. This hypothesis states that patterns in a lower class are less complex and thus easier to learn. Two artificial grammars of vowel harmony patterns with neutral vowels were tested. The two patterns differed in terms of the computational complexity and attestedness. The At Least One (ALO) pattern, the less complex pattern and the unattested vowel harmony pattern, is predicted to be easier to learn than the Rightmost pattern, the more complex pattern and the attested pattern. The results showed that the Rightmost pattern was more difficult to learn than the ALO pattern. This supports the Subregular Hypothesis and implies a learning bias toward computational complexity despite the attestedness of vowel harmony patterns.
Morpho-phonological investigation of compounds in Korean Sign Language
Vol.28 No.1
It is well-known that compounding in sign languages shows various phonological processes such as reduction, assimilation, and deletion. Sandler and Lillo-Martin (2006) argue that compounding shows phonological processes or special rhythmical patterns (weak-strong pattern) such as losing repetition of the first sign in monosyllabic or disyllabic compounds in American Sign Language, using the Hand Tier Model. Phonological processes have been reported in various sign languages, such as Sign Languages of the Netherlands and Australian Sign Language as well. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that compounding in Korean Sign Language (KSL) has the same weak-strong pattern in compounding as other sign languages. Several KSL compounds are examined, and the results show that KSL compounds reduce repetition of the first sign, supporting the weak-strong pattern.
Handshape Complexity in Initialized Signs: A Cross-linguistic Study
Vol.31 No.4
This paper presents a comprehensive phonological analysis of handshapes undergoing initialization in Korean Sign Language (KSL) and extends its findings to comparisons with other sign languages. The study investigates the complexity of these handshapes in terms of finger and joint configurations, aiming to discern universal tendencies in signs undergoing the initialization process. Results indicate that initialized handshapes in KSL and other sign languages typically exhibit low to medium complexity, suggesting the potential representation of unmarked handshapes within the language. This research lays the groundwork for future investigations, offering valuable insights into the phonological intricacies of initialized handshapes in KSL and contributing to broader cross-linguistic comparisons.
Vol.21 No.4
Recently, unmaned CCTV, traffic monitoring, object tracking, and automatic driving systems are widely utilized for the safety and convenience however, when the natural phenomenon such as haze makes disappear the chromatic information of images, the acquisition of accurate information through image is difficult even though variety of image processing algorithms are applied. For the sake of removing such reason which deteriorate the visibility of image, few kinds of technique for the removal of haze are suggested using only one image instead of requirement of multi-images and additional informations. In this study, the dark channel prior which was suggested by He et al. was realized in LabVIEW environment and applied to correction of haze in image, and the extents of haze removal for the adjustment of weighting value of haze removal were compared.
