Correlation between fretting and plain fatigue using fatigue damage gradient

Fretting fatigue is correlated with plain fatigue in order to develop a method to estimate fretting fatigue life from plain fatigue data. Fretting fatigue experiments as well as plain ones were conducted to obtain fatigue life data at various conditions. Finite element analyseswere conducted to evaluate the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) fatigue damage parameter around crack initiation location. It is revealedthat the SWT in fretting fatigue decays exponentially away from the surface. Moreover, a correlation function exists that relates the gradientof normalized SWT at the surface to the maximum SWT ratio of plain fatigue to fretting fatigue at the same life. It is demonstratedthat equivalent SWT for fretting fatigue, which is determined from the correlation function, can be compared directly with plain fatiguedata for estimation of fretting fatigue life.

We report on a strong violet luminescence emitted from the ZnO:Al films grown on glass substrate by radio-frequency magnetron sputtering. The growth of high-quality thin films and their optical properties are controlled by adjusting the mixture ratio of Ar and $O_2$, which is used as the sputtering gas. The crystallinity of the films is improved as the oxygen flow ratio is decreased, as evidenced in both x-ray diffractometer and atomic force microscope measurements. As for the violet luminescence measured by photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, the peak energy and intensity of the PL signal are decreased with increasing the oxygen flow ratio. The peak energy of the violet PL spectrum for the thin film with an oxygen flow ratio of 50 % is almost constant, regardless of the increase of laser Power and temperature. These results indicate that the violet PL signal is probably due to defects related to interstitial Zn atoms.

본 논문에서는 저가의 웹 카메라를 사용하여 영상을 입력받아 손 부분 영상을 추출한 후 동심원 추적 알고리즘을 사용하여 손가락 동작을 인식하는 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 기존의 인터페이스처럼 손에 별도의 센서를 부착하지 않음으로 신체에 불편함을 주지 않는다. 또한 저가인 웹 카메라를 사용해서 비용적인 측면에서 활용성을 증가 시켰다. 동심원 추적 알고리즘을 사용하여 펴진 손가락의 개수뿐 만아니라, 손가락 접힘 여부 정보를 효율적으로 추출할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 제안한 알고리즘을 사용하여, 손가락 동작을 평균 95.48%의 정확도로 인식할 수 있음을 확인했으며, 손을 사용한 HCI 및 원격 제어 명령어 입력수단으로 활용가능성을 확인하였다. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm, Concentric-Circle Tracing algorithm, which recognizes finger's shape and counts the number of fingers of hand using low-cost web-camera. We improve algorithm's usability by using low-price web-camera and also enhance user's comfortability by not using a additional marker or sensor. As well as counting the number of fingers, it is possible to extract finger's shape information whether finger is straight or folded, efficiently. The experimental result shows that the finger gesture can be recognized with an average accuracy of 95.48%. It is confirmed that the hand-gesture is an useful method for HCI input and remote control command.

Znic sulfide (ZnS) thin films were deposited on glass substrates by radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The substrate temperature varied from room temperature (RT) to $500^{\circ}C$. The structural and optical properties of ZnS films were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX) and UV-visible transmission spectra. The XRD analyses reveal that ZnS films have cubic structures with (111) preferential orientation, whereas the diffraction patterns sharpen with the increase in substrate temperatures. The FESEM images indicate that ZnS films deposited at $400^{\circ}C$ have nano-sized grains with a grain size of ~ 67 nm. Then films exhibit relatively high transmittance of 80% in the visible region, with an energy band gap of 3.71 eV. One obvious result is that the energy band gap of the film increases with increasing the substrate temperatures.

A fretting fatigue life estimation method that takes into account the stress gradient effect was developed by the authors [Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 28 (2014) 2153-2159]. In the developed method, fatigue damage value at the cracking location is corrected with fatigue damage gradient and the corrected value is compared directly with the plain fatigue data for life estimation. In other words, the correction factor is the ratio of plain fatigue damage to fretting fatigue damage at the same life and a function of fatigue damage gradient. Since reliability of the method was verified only for cylinder-on-flat contact configuration in the previous study, the present study extends application of the method to flat-on-flat contact configurations by developing the correction factor for both the contact configuration. Fretting fatigue experiments were conducted to obtain fatigue life data for various fretting pads. Finite element analyses were conducted to evaluate the Smith-Watson-Topper (SWT) fatigue damage parameter in the cracking region. It is revealed that the SWT parameter in fat-on-flat contact configuration decreases exponentially away from the surface as in cylinder-on-flat contact configuration, and thus the SWT gradient at the surface can be evaluated reliably. Moreover, it is found that decrease in the SWT parameter around the cracking location can be expressed by piecewise exponential curves. If the gradient of SWT at the surface is used as a representative value of SWT gradient, it is impossible to establish functional relationship between the SWT gradient and the correction factor for both the contact configurations although it was possible for cylinder-on-flat contact configuration. However, if weighted average of the SWT gradient values obtained from each exponential curve in the piecewise exponential curve is used as a representative value, the correction factor for both the contact configurations becomes a function of the SWT gradient, and thus fretting fatigue life in both the contact configurations can be estimated with a single correction function.
