Melamine-formaldehyde resin is widely used in manufactur ing plastics, tableware, t,extile and paper finishing, laminates, electrical insulations, and adhesives throughout the world, Allergic contact dermatitis to this resin has rarely been reported worldwide and has not been reported in Korean literature. We report a case of occupational allergic contact dermatitis to melamine-formaldehyde resin in a 38-year-old man. He had been working for a month in a textile factory when pruritic multiple erythematous patches and placjues developed on the face, both forearms and dorsa of the hands. In the factory melamine-forrnldehyde resin was used for crease resistant finishing. A Patch test revealed a positive reaction to rnelamine-formaldehyde resin. (Kor J Dermatol 1997;35(2): 369-373)
Microbial phenomics linking the phenotype to fonction: The potential of Raman spectroscopy

Raman spectroscopy is a promising tool for identifying microbial phenotypes based on single cell Raman spectra reflecting cellular biochemical biomolecules. Recent studies using Raman spectroscopy have mainly analyzed phenotypic changes caused by microbial interactions or stress responses (e.g., antibiotics) and evaluated the microbial activity or substrate specificity under a given experimental condition using stable isotopes. Lack of labelling and the nondestructive pretreatment and measurement process of Raman spectroscopy have also aided in the sorting of microbial cells with interesting phenotypes for subsequently conducting physiology experiments through cultivation or genome analysis. In this review, we provide an overview of the principles, advantages, and status of utilization of Raman spectroscopy for studies linking microbial phenotypes and functions. We expect Raman spectroscopy to become a next-generation phenotyping tool that will greatly contribute in enhancing our understanding of microbial functions in natural and engineered systems.

Inverted follicular keratosis is a benign epithelial tumor occurring most frequently on the face or scalp of older persons as a firm, skin-colored papule. It may rarely occur from a pre-existing nevus sebaceus as a secondary tumor. Herein we report a case of inverted follicular keratosis arising from a pre-existing nevus sebaceus in a 47-year-old male. He presented with a keratotic erythematous dome-shaped tumor which suddenly developed from a pre-existing yellowish papillomatous plaque on his scalp. Histopathological findings of the secondary lesion revealed a proliferating epithelial tumor with numous squamous eddies in the center, consistent with inverted follicular keratosis. 야생쥐의 피부사상균 및 각질친화성 진균의 보균실태에 관한 연구

Background: Animals with zoophilic dermatophytes are important sources of dermatophytoses in man, because zoophilic dermatophytes are frequently transmitted directly or indirectly from domestic and wild animals. Trichophyton(T.) mentagrophytes has a wide range of hosts. Among these, rodents are well-known reservoirs in many other countries. In our country a few sporadic reports of incidence in experimental rats have been reported, but there is no study on the incidence in wild rodents in Korea. Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of wild rodents as a host of dermatophytes and keratinophilic fungi in Korea. Methods: Forty-nine wild rodents (Apodumus(A.) agrarius; 44, Crocidura spp.; 5) were captured from 6 different regions of Kyungi-do with Sherman fraps. Fungi were isolated by using the MacKenzie's brush technique. Results: 1. Isolation rate of dermatophytes from wild rodents in Korea was 16.3%. 2. T. mentagrophytes was isolated from six A. agrarius (12.2%). Isolation rates from dorsum hairs, ventral hairs and feet were 4.5%, 9.1% and 9.1% respectively. 3. Other dermatophytes and related keratinophilic fungi isolated were Chrysosporium spp. (65.3%), Scopulariopsis spp. (10.2%) and T. terrestre (4.1%). 4. Chrysosporium spp. was the most frequently isolated species from four out of six Kyonggi-do regions ranging 58.3%~83.3%. Scopulariopsis spp. was isolated the most in Kumgwang-myun Ansung-gun, and T. terrestre in Kimpo-gun. Conclusion: These results that wild rodents, especially A. agrarius, may be the important reservoirs of T. mentagrophytes and other keratinophilic fungi in Korea.
