Vol.55 No.2

Reanimating the Trojan Past in Troilus and Cressida

Vol.33 No.3

William Shakespeare’s notorious disillusionment towards the legendary past in Troilus and Cressida is firmly rooted in the nature of dramatic retelling of the past itself and the nostalgia therein. The mythic characters in the play exist as deliberately satirical caricatures, bespeaking Shakespeare’s doubts about Britain’s Trojan past as a source of prestigious collective identity. Despite Troy’s significance as the legendary point of origin for European nations, the notion of homogeneous historiography has become impossible to maintain due to the countless retellings and appropriations of Trojan narratives. As a result, Troy can only exist as an amorphous specter of the past. The ghostly existence of the legendary figures is explored by Shakespeare through merciless critique of courtly love and chivalric valor supposedly represented by these characters. By dismantling and exposing the fragmented history of Troy, Shakespeare shows the impossibility of an idealized past, or successfully bringing such a thing back to life.

“Sum ded and sum awedde”: Ambiguity, Madness, and Dehumanization in Sir Orfeo

Vol.33 No.2

Sir Orfeo explores the ambivalent nature of categorized dichotomy dividing civilized humanity and savage inhumanity by having Orfeo and the fairy king intrude on the realms of each other. Although the fairy king and his companions display familiar tropes of courtly activities and conducts similar to Orfeo’s own court, their refined civility comes across as uncanny due to the alien nature of the Otherworld. Conversely, Orfeo and Heurodis experience traumatic loss of legible humanity through their encounters with the fairy king, fashioning themselves into something inhuman as they leave the comfort of human society. Heurodis’s madness is especially unsettling, since the physical and psychological damage sustained on her person renders her inaccessible as a courtly queen. The “happy” ending of the poem is thus unsatisfactory from the dynastic standpoint, which is in turn an expression of the overarching thematic concern with narrative ambiguity and fractured dualism.

Fantasies of Conquest: Political Marriage and the Assimilation of the East in Cligés and Bevis of Hampton

Vol.46 No.-

Cligés by Chrétien de Troyes and Bevis of Hampton by an anonymous poet maintain the fantasy of Western conquest of the East through the marriage narrative. In both works, a disenfranchised knight’s quest to reclaim his birthright coincides with his marriage to a desirable lady, which ultimately serves to cement the subjugation of the East by the West. However, the inherent fragility of the Western superiority is betrayed by the persistent anxiety surrounding the courtship and marriage plot, especially the element of female sexuality and virginity. In Cligés, the unsettling presence of Tristan and Iseult as ominous precedents of Cligés and Fenice, combined with the final anecdote on the harem of Constantinople established as a response to Fenice’s adultery, dismantles the very narrative of Western triumph over the East as the cultural superior by emphasizing the illicit nature of Cligés’s love. On the other hand, Bevis of Hampton complicates the conventional gender dynamics of courtly romances by presenting Josian as an assertive and thus potentially transgressive figure, which is explained to be rooted in her Otherness as a Saracen woman. Although these women are complicit in their own subjugation by their prospective husbands, the courtship and marriage narrative surrounding them expose the unresolved paranoia about the feminine and the Eastern.
