This study provides experimental insights into the effect of spacers in channels on the performance of liquid desiccant regeneration modules. A hydrophobic microporous composite membrane consisting of an active layer of polytetrafluoroethylene and a support layer of polypropylene was employed in the regeneration module. Woven spacers were adopted for both channels to improve heat and mass transfer across the boundary layer adjacent to the composite membrane. The module performance was evaluated under a variety of operating conditions, including the temperature and flow rate of feed (i.e., 25 wt% lithium chloride solution) and permeate (i.e., ultrapure water) streams, in terms of permeation flux and performance ratio. The results demonstrated that the use of spacers reduced temperature and concentration polarization under given operating conditions, resulting in an approximately 3–4 times improvement in permeation flux; here, the maximum performance ratio was observed to be approximately 44%.

This study presents an experimental performance evaluation of a direct-contact membrane distillation-based regeneration module with potassium formate (KCOOH) as a liquid desiccant. The DCMD-based regeneration module is employed to re-concentrate the dilute potassium formate solution in the membrane-based dehumidification process. A hydrophobic microporous composite membrane comprising of an active layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a support layer of polypropylene (PP) was used in the regeneration module. The module performance was experimentally evaluated under a variety of operating conditions such as the feed temperature and flow rate of feed and permeate streams. The results are described by the mean permeate flux and the performance ratio.

This study presents an experimental performance evaluation of the liquid-desiccant regeneration module that employs a direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process. The DCMD-based regeneration module is implemented to re-concentrate the diluted liquid desiccant in the dehumidification process. In the present work, the regeneration process uses a hydrophobic composite membrane, comprising of an active layer of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and a support layer of polypropylene (PP). The performance of the flat-sheet module is experimentally evaluated for assorted operation conditions such as concentrations of liquid-desiccant solutions (i.e., feed) and temperatures and flow rates of feed and permeate streams. Aqueous solutions of lithium chloride (LiCl) in a concentration range of 30−34% weight are used in the experiments. The results are described by parameters such as the permeate flux and the performance ratio.

In previous studies on DCMD process, it has been found that the microbubbles play a significant role in enhancing the heat and mass transfers in the liquid streams, leading to an improvement in the DCMD permeate flux. In this study, a novel swirling flow-type microbubble generator capable of supplying air is thus designed and fabricated for DCMD process. DCMD performance is evaluated for various operating conditions (i.e., air supply flow rate, feed temperature and flow rate) and geometrical (i.e., swirler length and nozzle tip size) conditions so as to demonstrate possibilities offered by the microbubbles. In order to analyze the microbubble characteristics generated by the microbubble generator, the probability distribution of microbubble diameter is inferred from these experimental measurements at assorted operation conditions. It is clearly evident that more microbubbles are generated at higher feed flow rates and lower feed temperatures, resulting in a higher DCMD permeate flux.
