The particle size of suspended particulates was measured by a Anderson air sampler from Mar. 1982 to Feb. 1984 in a part of Seoul. It was concluded as follows : 1) The arithmetic concentration of suspended particulates was $147.8{\mu}g/m^3$ in Spring, 136.9 in Summer, 131.9 in Autumn and 158.1 in Winter respectively. 2) The cumulative distribution of suspended particulates size in logarithmic diagram showed similar to normal log distribution. 3) The atmospheric particulate matters showed a bimodal size distribution on the base of unit particle concentrations, which divided at approximately $2{\mu}m$ in the diameter. 4) While the fine particulates less than $2.1{\mu}m\;was\;35.4{\sim}45.0%$, the coarse particulates was $55.0{\sim}64.5%$. 5) The higher the concentration of suspended particulates, the more increased the ratio of fine particulates. The higher the concentration of suspended particulates, the lower median size of suspended particulate as well. 6) The respirable dust particulates less than $4.7{\mu}m\;was\;52.2{\sim}62.9%$ in seasonal average through the 2 year samples. With the above result, air pollution concerned with public health could be evaluated and the control measures also are suggested.
Caco-2 세포에서 글루텐이 야기한 염증 반응 및 산화적 손상에 대한 참모자반 열수 추출물의 보호 효능 및 기전 규명

In this study, we investigated the inhibitory activity of a hot water extract from Sargassum Fulvellum (SFH) against Gluten-induced inflammation and oxidative damages in Caco-2 cell, a human colon epithelial cell. First, we confirmed that SFH improved the cell viability by reducing the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the formation of apoptotic body in Gluten-stimulated Caco-2 cells without the cytotoxicity. Also, SFH decreased the mRNA expression level of cytokines such as interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-8 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α increased by the Gluten stimulation in Caco-2 cells. In addition, SFH effectively modulated the expressions of apoptotic molecules with the reduction of pro-apoptotic molecules, Bax, p53 and cleaved PARP while the increment of the anti-apoptotic molecule, Bcl-2. Moreover, SFH suppressed the nuclear factor (NF)-κB activation by regulating the phosphorylation and degradation of IκB-α as well as the translocation of cytoplasmic NF-κB p65 into the nucleus. Taken together, these results suggest that SFH may be a natural agent with beneficial potentials for the improvment of inflammation and oxidative damages induced by Gluten.
글루텐 자극이 야기한 피부각질형성세포의 산화적 손상과 염증 반응에대한 감태 열수추출물의 억제 효과

In this study, we investigated the protective effects of Ecklonia cava (E. cava, EC) against gluten-induced oxidative damage and inflammation in HaCaT cells, a human keratinocyte. First of all, the hot water extract prepared from EC (ECH) was used for this study. ECH treatment increased the cell viability of HaCaT cells, which was reduced by gluten stimulation, and inhibited the generations of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO). Moreover ECH decreased the sub-G1 DNA contents and apoptotic body formation in gluten-stimulated HaCaT cells. The expression levels of inflammatory cytokines (interlukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-8 and IL-13) were also decreased by ECH treatment. Furthermore, ECH decreased the protein expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase2 (COX2) by suppressing the activation of nuclear factor (NF)κB and ERK/P38 signaling in gluten-stimulated HaCaT cells. From theses results, we suggest that ECH possess the potential to attenuate oxidative damage and inflammation caused by gluten stimulation in HaCaT cells.
Landsat TM 영상자료를 이용한 대청호의 영양상태 평가

The objective of this study was to use remotely sensed data, combined with in situ data, for the assessment of trophic state for Daecheong reservoir. Three Landsat TM(Thematic Mapper) imagery data were processed to portray trophic state conditions. The remotely sensed data and the measured data were obtained on 20 June 1995. Regression models have been developed between the chlorophyll-a concentration and reflectance which was converted to Landsat TM digital data. The regression model was determined based on the correlation coefficient which was higher than 0.7 and was applied to the entire study area to generate a distribution map of chlorophyll-a and trophic state. The equation, providing estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration, represented the year-to-year spatial variation of trophic zones in the reservoir. Satellite remote sensing data derived from Landsat TM had been successfully used for trophic slate mapping in Daecheong reservoir.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the cytoprotective effects of a neutrase enzymatic hydrolysate derived from Buccinum striatissumum (BSMN) against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative damage in hepatocytes. BSMN effectively scavenged the 2,2-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline)-6-sulfonic acid radical (ABTS) and increased the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) value by incresing the reducing power. Also, BSMN markedly increased the cell viabiltiy by inhibiting the intracellualr reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in H2O2-stimulated hepatocytes. In addition, BSMN decreased the sub-G1 DNA contents and apoptotic body formation increased by regulating the apoptosis related proteins (Bcl-2, Bax and p53). Moreover, BSMN activated the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway by suppressing the activation of NF-κB and ERK/p38 signaling in H2O2-stimulated hepatocytes. These results suggest BSMN protects hepatocytes against oxidative stress caused by H2O2 stimulation

premature infants. Therefore, an early diagnosis and treatment of a hemodynamically significant PDA are very important. A widened pulse pressure is considered to be a well known clinical sign of a PDA in older infants and children; however, whether this is also applicable in the case of preterm infants remains to be confirmed. The aims of this study were to investigate the change in blood pressure (BP) before and after medical treatment of a PDA with indomethacin and to evaluate if the change in the pulse pressure in preterm infants with a medically treated PDA could be used as a reliable clinical predictor of a hemodynamically significant PDA. Subjects and Methods: Between January 2005 and June 2009, a retrospective analysis was performed in preterm infants with a hemodynamically significant PDA (PDA group, n=72) and preterm infants without a PDA (control group, n=72) at the Chonnam National University Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The PDA was closed by treatment with indomethacin. The BP was compared between the two groups over the seven days after the first dose of indomethacin. Results: In preterm infants with a hemodynamically significant PDA, the mean systolic (55.1±6.0 mmHg) and diastolic BPs (31.4±6.2 mmHg) were lower than those in the controls (mean systolic BP 58.0±6.4 mmHg, mean diastolic BP 34.7±6.0 mmHg) before indomethacin treatment. When the ductus arteriosus was successfully closed by indomethacin treatment, there was a gradual increase in both the systolic and diastolic BPs without any change in the pulse pressure. Conclusion: The results of this study show that a widened pulse pressure is not a useful clinical sign of a hemodynamically significant PDA in preterm infants. However, low systolic and diastolic BPs may be useful clinical signs of a hemodynamically significant PDA in preterm infants. If the systolic and diastolic BP is low, a PDA should be considered and echocardiography should be performed for early diagnosis and treatment.
