Azo dye 를 포함하는 PMMA 마이크로캡슐의 제조 및 응용

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The structure of PMMA microcapsules has a core/shell type microsphere that disperse red1 used as a core material was encapsulated with PMMA. The core/shell type structure was confirmed by a FT-IR spectroscopy. The particle size and appearance of the microspheres can be controlled by varing polymerization conditions such as stirring rate, temperature, and the feed composition of MMA to disperse red 1, a photoresponsive azo dye. From a SEM analysis, the particle size was in the range of 0.2~1.0 μm. We investigated their optical characteristics by irradiating Ar polarized laser on the thin film of the prepared PMMA microcapsules. As a result, the core/shell type PMMA microcapsules could be used as a material for optical switching or PDLC display. Optical information recording is derived from photo-induced orientation of disperse red 1 by polarized laser irradiation. Such a photo-induced orientation would be attributed to a photoisomerization of azobenzene group of disperse red 1 that exists in the microcapsules.
