        This paper discusses Mrs Transome's life from a feminist perspective. At first, Mrs Transome's life is posed not as a personal tragedy, but as women's question of the Victorian high-class women through Mrs Transome's marriage by the economic factor, her unhappy marriage life, her affair to Jermyn, and her endless fear and suffering of the past sin. Besides, her tragic life is related to the criticism of the governing class (including middle-class and gentry-class) through the patriarchal attitude of Jermyn and Harold, and their sexual ideology which separated men's sphere from women's sphere. Especially the objective description of her suffering, her rage to man, and her strong feminist statements, invokes readers' sympathy and pity with Eliot's penetrating insight Secondly, Mrs Transome's unhappy life influences Esther's choice by making Esther choose Felix rather than Harold, as "a last vision" through Mrs Transome's life makes Esther see her future to live if she would marry Harold. Consequently I confirm an assumption that women's question is portrayed well in the moral plot evaluated as a successful part in this novel, too.

      • 『비의 왕, 헨더슨』(Henderson the Rain King)의 희극성

        20세기 유태계 미국작가인 솔 벨로우(Saul Bellow)는 인간 옹호나 현실 긍정 이라는 주제를 희극성을 통해 달성하려 했으므로 희극성은 그의 문학세계를 이해하는데 있어 핵심적인 요소이다. 이런 측면에서 작품의 희극성을 인물과 상황의 희극성으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 특별히 인물의 희극성은 의도와 현실의 상치를 부조리극의 어리석은 영웅이나 전형적인 유태인 바보인 슐레미엘(Schlemiel)에 입각하여 살펴보았고, 핸더슨이 가치 있는 생을 추구하는 과정에서 부딪치는 여러 가지 상황의 희극성도 살펴보았다. 그러므로 그의 소설이 "생각하게 하는 웃음"을 제공하며 한때의 베스트셀러로 사장되지 않고 계속 주목을 받는 이유는 독자에게 그저 웃고 넘기는 웃음이 아니라, 주어진 인간의 한계상황에서 그 한계를 초월해 우울한 현실을 웃어넘기려는 해학과도 같은 경지의 웃음을 제공하여 주기 때문일 것이다. Saul Bellow is distinguished from the pessimistic and even negative modernists in his affirmation of the humanity, in that his consistent major theme is the affirmation of reality and the defense of man. So the study of the comic elements is very important in understanding of his novels. I analyse the comic elements in characters and situations of Henderson the Rain King(1959) from this view. First of all, the comic characteristic of Henderson comes from a comic absurd hero who cannot harmonize his ideal with reality. Both his overestimation and devaluation of himself, comes from this discrepancy between his intention and reality. The comic situation occurs in his search for reality in Africa, too Since he does not perceive reality as it is, his absurd reaction to reality a comic effect. However, he comes to realize and to accept the reality of life through these comic situations. So the comic elements of his novel have a close relation with the theme of affirmation of reality. Thus his novel gives a thoughtful laughter in that the comic elements give not only the comic effect but support his affirmation of reality. That is why Bellow's work appeals to the modern reader today.

      • 관상동맥 질환자의 자가간호 지식과 교육요구에 관한 연구

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge about self care and the learning need in patients with coronary artery disease. The subjects in this study were 80 patients in 2 general hospital. The data were collected by means of a interview and mail surveys from Sep. 10 to Dec. 30, 1997. Data analysis included percentage, frequency, ANOVA. t-test, Pearson correlation using SPSS/PC+ program. The results were follows ; The Knowledge score about self-care in pre-discharge was 17.4 and 18.43 point in post-discharge. The learning need about the self care was very high. The most interesting subject was the 'disease characteristics' in pre-discharge and 'medication' in postdischarge. There were no significant correlation between patient's characteristics and the knowledge about self care, learning need. This results suggest that nurse should educate the patient with coronary artery disease in order to increase self care.

      • 看護學生의 自我槪念과 學業成就와의 관계

        This study attempted to analyze and confirm the correlation between self-concept and the accademic achievement. It is hoped that the results of this study may be used as a basis for estabiliting educational objectives in nursing education. This subjects of the survey were 188 nursing students from seoul health junior college. The collected data was analysed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOV A. Pearson Correlation Coefficient. The results of study were as follows : 1. Hypothesis: "The higher self concept score, the higher academic achievment" was rejected(r=.0881, p>.05). 2. The level of self concept: Of a possible maxmum score of 120 points on the 30 question about self concept, the maximum score was 107 and minimum score was 52. The mean score for self concept was 87.96. 4. Results of the relationship between the subject's general characteristics and self concept was found to be statistically significant in physical health status(F=5.346, p<.0l), the degree of satisfaction about major(F=3.255, p<.05).

      • Daniel Deronda 연구 : 새로운 삶의 모색

        I approach George Eliot's Daniel Deronda(1876), her last novel, from the feminist perspective, which is an important key to the understanding of Eliot's works, with the two assumptions in this article: 1) the right understanding of the woman question has an influence on the objective presentation of the Victorian social reality, and 2) despite Eliot's conservative attitude revealed in the endings of this novel, her attitude on that issue suggests a gradual improvement. This work brings about an important problem of the inconsistency of the content as well as of the structure. The successful part in which the objective presentation is achieved, for example, Gwendolen part that criticizes not only a typical married life but also the limits of upper class represented by Grandcourt and of high society of England run by the logic of capitalism, is described as the question of the idle upper class women in the Victorian society. However, the less successful latter part, Daniel part with a view to overcome the problem of Gwendolen part centering on the upper class society of England, tends to weaken a woman question posed convincingly in the successful part and reveals Eliot's limited perception of a woman question. Consequently, the analyse of th is work leads us to convince that this inconsistency of artistic achievement between Gwendolen part and Daniel Part that has provoked many controversies because of the hiatus - has a close relation with Eliot's ambivalent attitude toward a woman's issue, in brief, that this inconsistency is partly due to Eliot's attitude toward the woman question. Secondly, the open-ending of Daniel Deronda, which Gwendolen sought for the better future beyond both the death and marriage, suggests a gradual development in Eliot's attitude to a woman question as Eliot seems to deny the easy romantic ending such as the death or marriage of a heroine most resolutely. Thus the two assumptions of this analysis are confirmed as right ones. Eliot's objective descriptions in the successful part make us grasp a woman issue of the upper class in the middle and latter part of Victorian age and feel a sense of radical resistance of the oppressive society to women. As a result, when I consider Eliot's position in feminist criticism, her conservative position of this issue must be regarded not as her sheer limit but as her feminist achievement in that she shows a rather advanced insight into a woman issue beyond her apparently ambivalent attitude compared with the other Victorian writers.

        세 영화에 재현된 안락사 담론: <밀리언 달러 베이비>, <유 돈 노우 잭>, <미 비포 유>

        This paper investigates the discourse of euthanasia in three films: the 2004 film about a boxing trainer who helped the mercy killing of a boxer, <Million Dollar Baby>, the 2010 TV biopic about suicide-assist doctor Jack Kevorkian, <You Don’t Know Jack>, and the 2016 romantic drama about a paralysis patient who travels to Switzerland for assisted suicide, <Me Before You>. Though these films are similar in that they deal with euthanasia, they are a little different in their situation. The first film tells Frankie, a trainer who assisted the euthanasia of Maggie who was in an incurable vegetative state because of her injury in a world championship title match. The second film tells the story of Michigan pathologist Dr. Kevorkian, who over the course of his controversial career helped 130 people−all of them terminally ill−end their lives comfortably and humanely with an instrument that he made. Despite the gratitude his patients felt, his work sparked a national debate about the morality of euthanasia in humans and he was vilified by some prosecutors. The third film, <Me Before You>, is a fictional story of a wealthy young man in London, Will Traynor, who is left suddenly paralyzed by a road accident. In the end, Will decides that life without physical freedom isn’t worth living in spite of his love for Louisa Clark, his care-giver and he travels to Switzerland to die, leaving enough money to give Louisa the financial freedom to pursue her dreams. Will’s generous final act may confirm Elizabeth Kubler-Ross’s belief “Everyone should growth until one’s death.” The process of euthanasia thus prompts us to consider preparing for a good death, and, possibly, a good life for those we leave behind.
