Interactive Language Use and Emotional Aspects of Using Computers for Class Discussions

This study examined what the effects of computer discussions on interactive English language use of students who were considered reticent in class, and their perceptions of self-efficacy and language anxiety, and how different individual types of students would interact with the different contexts of oral and computer discussions. Data were collected using quantitative methods for discussion data and self-efficacy and language anxiety measures, and qualitative methods for interview and class observation from an advanced ESL writing class. The results indicated that the computer discussions seemed to help reticent students enhance their quantitative productivity in discussions, but it did not necessarily elicit more sophisticated and complex English language from these students. The analyses for students’ self-efficacy and anxiety measures further suggested that the computer discussions could contribute to lowering students’ language anxiety but not to improvement of their self-efficacy. In addition, the qualitative analysis illustrated that the students of one participant group would establish different emotional experience from those of the other group in the oral discussions. Then, the experiences of these students seemed to be created differently within the novel context of computer discussions.

Mad(wo)man in “A Prison of Memories”

본 논문은 크리스토퍼 놀란의 2010년 영화 『인셉션』의 주인공 코브가 자신의 내면에 대한 깨달음을 얻게 되고 이를 통해 자신의 죽은 아내 맬에 대한 병적인 집착에서 벗어나는 과정을 살펴본다. 본 논문은 맬에 대한 코브의 병적인 집착에 대한 이해의 지평을 넓히기 위하여 샬롯 브론테가 『제인 에어』에서 버사 메이슨을 통해 그려낸 다락방에 갇힌 미친 여자의 모습과 코브가 만들어 낸 “기억의 감옥”에 갇힌 맬의 모습을 비교한다. 두 작품이 그려내는 갇혀 있는 미친 여자의 모습을 비교함으로써 본 논문은 코브가 “기억의 감옥”에 가둔 것이 그의 죽은 아내 맬이 아니라 사실은 자기 자신임을 밝혀낸다. 코브가 맬의 투사를 통해 실제로는 다른 누구가 아닌 자기 자신을 가두게 된 이유는 자신이 더 이상 맬을 사랑하지도 않으며 맬과 함께 있고 싶지도 않다는 사실을 인정하지 못하기 때문이다. 따라서 “기억의 감옥”에서의 탈출은 그가 이 사실을 온전히 인지하고 받아들일 때에야 가능하다.『제인 에어』에서 제인이 자신을 억압하는 가부장적 권력으로부터 탈출을 하게 되는 것은 자기 자신의 광기를 통해서가 아니라 버사의 광기를 통해서이다. 이는 제인 에어가 빅토리아 시대를 사는 여인으로서 가질 수 있는 주체성의 명확한 한계를 보여준다고 할 수 있다. 반면 『인셉션』에서 코브는 제인보다는 좀 더 적극적으로 주체성을 실행할 수 있기에 그는 제인처럼 타인의 광기를 통해서 탈출하지 않고 궁극적으로는 스스로의 힘으로 광기에서 탈출을 이루어낸다. 코브에게 있어 기억의 감옥, 즉 광기로부터의 탈출은 자신이 실제라고 믿는 세계에서 삶을 영위하고자 하는, 비록 다소 이기적일 수 있으나 지극히 인간적인 자신의 욕망을 인정하고 받아들일 때 가능해지고 이 과정을 통해서만 코브는 자신의 죽은 아내에 대한 집착에서 자신을 온전히 해방시킬 수 있다. 비록 영화는 코브가 집에 돌아가 만나는 그의 자녀들이 실재하는 존재인지 또 다른 꿈 속 환상인지의 문제에 대해 열린 결말을 제시하지만, 그가 이전보다 자신의 내면을 더 잘 이해하게 되었고 그로 인해 더 이상 죽은 사람의 망령에 시달리지 않고 자신이 실제라고 믿는 세계에서 실재한다고 믿는 자들을 사랑할 수 있게 되었음은 분명하다. This paper examines the process by which Cobb, the protagonist in Christopher Nolan’s 2010 film, Inception, attains self-awareness and thereby overcomes his morbid obsession with his dead wife, Mal. Analyzing Cobb’s pathological relationship with Mal in light of Charlotte Brontë’s depiction of a madwoman in the attic in Jane Eyre, this essay contends that Cobb has imprisoned not only Mal but also himself in a “prison of memories” because of his inability to accept the truth that he neither loves her nor desires her presence with him any longer. In Jane Eyre, Jane achieves escape from an oppressive patriarchal power not through her own madness but through Bertha’s madness, demonstrating her lack of agency as a Victorian woman. In contrast, in Inception, Cobb manages to liberate himself from a prison of memories of his own construction by being honest about his possibly selfish yet fundamentally human desire to turn away from his dead wife. Although the movie deliberately leaves it ambiguous whether or not the children he returns to at the end are his “real” children, it is clear that with enhanced self-awareness, Cobb is now better prepared to love his children in the realm of existence which is free from the presence of the projection of a dead person.

이 논문은 한국과 헝가리 민요 텍스트에 나타난 흑백색의 의미상징에 관한 연구이다. 민요에 사용된 흑백색이 원형에서 출발하여 어떤 다양한 확장의미로 변화하는지에 대하여 고찰하였다. 즉 흑백색의 개념적 의미에서 출발하여 주제적, 내포적, 사회적, 정서적, 반영적, 연어적 의미로 확산되어 가는 용례를 찾아, 색채어가 표현하는 다양한 의미상징을 분류하였다. 분류의 방식은 색채의 의미가 개인이나 사회에 긍정적인 방향-부정적 방향인가에 따라 긍정적-부정적 의미상징으로 나누어 각각에 속하는 확장의미의 용례에 따라 분류하였다. 두 나라 민요에 사용된 흑백색이 공통적인 긍정적-부정적 의미를 가지고 있는지, 혹은 한 민족에게만 특정한 의미상징이 나타난다면, 그 이유가 무엇인지 찾아보고자 했다. 연구의 직접적인 목표는 색채가 가지고 있는 보편적이고 일반적 의미상징이 두 나라의 민요에서 공통적인 혹은 개별적이고 독자적인 의미상징을 가지는가 살펴보는 것이다. 연구 결과 흑백색의 원형은 두 민족에게 공통적이지만, 파생의미는 공통점만큼 차이점도 분명했다. 그 배경에는 두 민족의 종교, 역사, 생활환경과 같은 문화 환경적 요인의 영향임을 유추할 수 있다. This paper is a study on the meaning symbols of black and white in Korean and Hungarian folk song texts. Starting from the original form of black and white with basic meaning in folksongs, I analyzed the symbolism that contains various expanded meanings. In other words, starting from the conceptual meaning of black and white, we looked for usage cases that spread to thematic, connotative, social, emotional, reflective, and collocational meanings, and classified the various semantic symbols expressed by color words. The classification method was divided into positive and negative meaning symbols depending on whether the color's meaning was positive or negative for the individual or society, and the expanded meaning belonging to each was presented and classified. I wanted to find out whether the black and white colors used in the folk songs of the two countries have common positive and negative meanings, and if specific meaning symbols appear for one people, what the reason is. The direct goal of the study was to understand the universal and general meaning symbols of color, but behind the scenes, it was expected that each nation would have individual and unique meaning symbols. As a result of the study, the original black and white colors were common to both ethnic groups, but the derived meanings had both similarities and differences. It can be inferred that cultural and environmental factors such as the religion, history, and living environment of the two peoples may have had an influence in the background.

Recently, since construction projects become larger, more varied and higher, the importance of cost management has been increased. Especially, in residential construction, the management which is concerned with construction cost is recognized as a key factor of projects and companies' success. However, even though the importance of cost management is increased, its definition is restricted from traditional one. Therefore, this research suggests the concept which could evaluate the techniques and states of cost management which is used by companies or organizations with definition of cost management as 'Core', 'Optimization', 'Standardization', 'Sustainability', 'Superiority', and 'Technique'. According to the literature review, there are relatively less studies on Core, Optimization. Standardization, Sustainability and Superiority even there are many studies on the technical factor. Because of this, this research suggests the develop direction to the appropriated system which is based on the definition of new cost management by analyzing existing system such as cost planning, cost modeling, cost estimating, and cost database to achieve strategic cost management. In this research, we expect that this study will contribute to improve state of cost management as a key factor not only of business but also of project by extending the traditional concept of cost management to the concept of strategic factor.
